I'de have to see it in person to get a better idea of the size. I'm guessing it's pretty puny.

I'm wondering if it will have the reputation of the "poor man's" BMW.

I'd have no problem driving it. But I wonder how cheap it would come. The version that would start at, say, $27,000would have no options. BMW's are known for having a long option list.

I have been considering this as my next car purchase. With the power to weight ratio it should be a hoot to drive.

+2 to caz's comments, I want one of these too.

its going to be tough to hold off getting the m1 for the extra cash.

"On sale in the spring of 2008, the 1 Series Coupe will be available in two versions; the 128i and the 135i. Powered by a 3.0-liter, 230 horsepower inline 6-cyinder engine, the powerful 135i Coupe features BMW's twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder engine that produces 300 horsepower and an incredible 300 lb-ft of torque from as low as 1,400 rpm." The Car Is Fast and I Dont Think it will carry the poor man BMW reputation more of the young successful sporty type reputation Gonna Be My Bachelor Car

won't be that close, consider base price A3 is around 35K.

if Canada decide to get the 3/5 door version, I definitely would get one.

You should expect the 135 to be around 34-5K. You won't really have to option it out too much as it will come with a lot of M accessories. I always expected it to hit in the mid 40s all said and done. The 128 will be cheaper and will still be a pretty nice drive.

I'll say it again... the 5 door hatch WILL NOT be coming in 2008.

I love it, and I want one. The only thing I don't like is the side sills, makes the car look like its 'sagging' in the middle.

I'll be getting the op to test drive a 135 Cab this wednesday as well as a 128i Coupe. I will snap some quick pics once I am on the road so they don't yell at me :)

The manuals got snatched up quick... i'll be driving auto versions :( better than nothing...

I'll try out the new MINI Clubman this week as well...

I'm waiting to take the new M3 out for a spin... :)

asif9t9
10-30-2007, 11:49 AM
I think the difference between the 1 series and the 3 series is supposed to be the cost. Otherwise, why not choose an M3.

But anyways, what's the deal with these 1 series cars? How are they able to come in at a cheaper price, when all I've heard so far are good things? Is the car a beauty on the outside, but cheap Kia plastic on the inside? Or is it just simply a smaller car, with a smaller engine. Like, a 3/4th size 3 series?

SIM SIMMA
10-30-2007, 12:40 PM
1 series have been in Europe for awhile now. They are a smaller car which works for most European cities. The interior is not cheap plastic and the engines are not lesser engines.

The 128i shares the same engine as the 328 and the 528 (V6 230hp)
The 135i shares the same engine as the 335 and the 535 (V6 300hp twin turbo)

I will try and take some shots of the interior and give you guys my impressions after tomorrow.

10-30-2007, 12:41 PM
Since the 1 series is only 88lbs lighter than a 335i I would rather the 335i.

Now BMW is saying they were wrong and the car is actually closer to 200lbs lighter...

Not sure what is true yet... trying to find out.

What would be intriguing would be if they stuck the 3.0 litre twin-turbo diesel in the 1-series. Do they have that already?

Just got news today that it'll start at $33900 for a 128i. Hopefully the 135i will come in under 38k. They'll be arriving in dealers on March 17.

I've sat in one and I think they look better in real life compared to the pictures, where they look a bit awkward and upright at some angles.

Not impressed at the prices. The 135i starts under $35k in the US.

For $41700 I would rather import a slightly used 06 or 07 M-coupe from the US.

well it is 4k less then an STI in Canada and up to 10k less then the MR EVO.... and to be fair it is priced closer then our MS3 25% markup so not all bad.... but with BMW the devil is always in the details, a few options later and you're up over 50k

if you're looking to load one up, then the 335 is a better deal.

If you are looking to buy a 135 for the engine, then buy it stock I guess.

What a sweet motor.

Apparently there's a $2000 software package from Dinan for the 135 to make this thing a monster. From the stock 8.8 psi to 13.2 psi.(384hp/421tq)!!

not to mention you get treated like a piece of dirt when you buy a BMW...not a pleasant experience IMO...like they are doing you a favor by selling you a car

I had this happen at many dealerships, it has more to do with the sales person than anything. Saying that it happens because it is a BMW is false.

ok - well i love the look of bmw and i have been to parkview, budds and towne & country and everytime i have felt dirty when i left

at T&C i actually had a friend who had just bought an M5 refer me to his salesperson when i was going to buy a 330 a few years ago - the guy didn't even bother to call me back and had a junior guy (i guess) call me and tell me that they're willing to sell me the car for full list and they will throw in a set of mats........i told him that for $50,000 + taxes (in 2002) i figured that my 330 would have come with floor mats...."hey that's a $327 option that we are throwing in"....

i was ready to buy the car - i wasn't kicking tires....just couldn't follow through after that happened....would rather spend less money and have someone appreciate me....and its not like i am looking to have someone "service me" :chuckle every time i walk in the door either

so yeah - i've had some experience with BMW...my employer is currently driving a new 750 and the service dept treats him like dirt too....

i guess

I'm wondering if it will have the reputation of the "poor man's" BMW.

Odds are it will become the "poor middle manager's" BMW, while the 3 series will still hold the title of "poor executive's" BMW

story is i was looking to lease a 328 - i think the year was 2000 and i was a looking at a '99 demo...

told the salesman that i was looking to lease something in the $700/mth range as that was near the maximum lease payment that you were allowed to write off back then

i told him that the numbers SHOULD work for that particular vehicle - he told me that sure it would work as long as i bring my credit card so he can put $5,000 on it.....i am not doing the story justice here but he was serious

so i told him - look, why dont YOU tell me what you can get me for $700/mth....he came back with a 1995 325 with 85K on it....

so that was the last time i had any dealings with Budds - and i was referred to that salesman by a co-worker who had already bought 2 cars from him so its not like i was going in cold

Personally, I have nothing but good things to say about Markham TC BMW on hwy7 and Kennedy. I went to the dealership with my gf to look at the new 3 series coupes back when the current generation just came out. I went in thinking I could just look at the car without getting bothered by a salesperson ... which is what usually happens when sales people see young people looking at cars; we just get ignored. Much to my surprise, a sales lady approached me as soon as I stepped into the vehicle and asked me if I wanted to test drive one ! I was shocked, I couldn't believe it. So we chatted about the 335i and what not, while waiting for the demo to get back. I was in a rush and didn't get to actually drive the car , but I told her I would be back later to see it. Before we left, she offered us some snacks/drinks compliments of the dealership. lol sweeet !

I couldn't even get a salesperson to help me out at mazda when I was looking at the 3 ; despite being the only customer on the showroom floor. I told myself the first salesperson to approach me would get the sale, needless to say, no one got a sale that night. I think its stupid that some salespeople are so arrogant/ignorant like that, and having been to ALOT of dealerships, this ALWAYS happens at econo-car-dealerships. Some dealerships wouldn't even let me test drive a car because I wasn't over 21 - I couldn't believe it.

Next car is going to be a BMW for sure (in a few years), and I already know who I am going to give the sale to.

Too bloody expensive ( :( ) and if I had that kinda of money would take an M3 for extra $3K...

I think am M3 is more like $50k more... not just $3k more - I believe that the new M3 comes in at around the $80k - $90k mark. Maybe for $3k more you can get a 2000 - 2003 M3 with some high mileage on it.

I totally agree with everyones comments about how BMW tries to make you think that they are doing you a favour by selling you their cars... I find it entertaining.

Anyways, I took this car for a spin last week, and found it an absolute BLAST to drive. The power is almost overwhelming in the 135, being able to go 0 - 100km in about 5 seconds. For the price range, you cant really find any other car that comes close to this.

HOWEVER, if you need a car that is practical, this car is not for you. I basically consider this car a 2-seater. The trunk is small, and the back seat is almost useless.

SO, if you dont really ever have / need to have people in the back, and want a powerful car for around $45k, then go for it... this car is an absolute blast!
