Ok, so I want to apologize for the poor pics. I don't have a camera so my phone will have to suffice.

I'm working on a custom aluminum shift knob. I'm not sure if I'm going to leave the knob as it is (machined). I'm going to get it knurled and sand blasted. Then possibly anodized.

I designed it to sit low to the automatic gate and shorten the overall height. On top of that I covered up the automatic shift gate with suede to make it look like a manual.

salt stains FTW !

really thou, looking much better but I'd definitely get it turned and milled down to a design then the straight cylinder you have now.

lol, not a fan of winter and salt :s

I've had a lot of people suggest the whole taper design thing, but I'm into the 'sequential shifter' look. I'm definitly gonna get it knurled though.

This is the shifter from the Ascari A10:

lol, good referance. I tried. The autobox ain't that easy to take apart. To much stuff to cover up :(

Can't get the same sagging leather like on the MT. I might get the boot re stitched from 4 pieces to look more legit.

This by far is the worst mod on your car! You have an automatic, accept it, embrace it! Don't try to overcompensate for your shortcommings man!

Hey I embrace the fact I have an automatic, I'm not complaining. I'm just changing the look. :p

I just decided to cover up the gate rather than just change the knob!

Holy smokes you guys really cut deep! Thank god I'm not a nube anymore. I'm taking your comments into consideration, but I'm keeping it as I like it. I've had 50/50 from other people, but wow cut deep guys.

Fang, just put the nail it for me man.

If you replace that boot with OEM one, it might look better.

3GFX
12-12-2007, 11:00 AM
I'll give the leather a shot. The problem being is that leather is thick and may not fit through the opening and will only increase the buldge panty hose effect around the base of the get because I can't take the actual gate (silver part) out.

Fang, just put the nail it for me man.

*Sighs*

As you wish.

First let me say that I like you 3GFX. I really do. If you and I were in a bar and you were pissed drunk with your beer goggles on hitting on something you thought was hot I would stop you from making a bad decision you would regret later.

That being said I just want to bitch slap you right now! It looks bad. Seriously bad. It looks like a penis with a nut sack. I'd be afraid to touch it for fear that:

1. The car might jerk and like it or
2. I may enjoy the reaction.

Either way it's no good man. This is the kinda stuff that jdanielsg would find cool. Once you start down this path 3GFX there is no turning back. Next will be the plastic CT spinners then the headliner with tassels. I can't let you do this man. :loco

Embrace the automatic lifestyle 3GFX. Don't fight it.

3GFX
12-12-2007, 01:33 PM
Ahhhh thank you Fang. Your comedic description and relation to jdanielsg has inspired me to remove the boot. I will remove the boot but I'm working on the custom shift knob as I'm still a fan of the Ascari's. I'll post pics as the work progresses and I say goodbye to the suede pantyhose.

Fang, I appreciate the fact that you would help my 20/20 in a beer goggled situation.

Lest we forget that fat chicks need love to, they just gotta pay.

Adding a freakin huge shaft on your car that no car comes standard with may be sending out the wrong signals. These same signals would probably get you a lot of attention on Church street! Who knows, maybe you will find those nude models you were looking for there too! I agree with fang on this one.

I love how slick everything in the Ascari is, then you look at the GIANT "REVERSE" button

whatever you do don't move your knee when driving, or youll drop the tranny.

Vince you helped out a lot. It turns out the OEM manual boot will fit over and looks really good! Problem being its a little pricey. I have many plans before I go and spend $100 on the part I need, but its on the list!

Well the main thing is that you tried and hey if you like it go ahead and do it up...

I think this is what he was trying to do:

your current shift knob looks like a pop can to me, LOL!

oh and yeah the shift boot aint that great as everyone said...

none the less to help here is place that sells shift boots that should help your cause and be a bit cheaper:

Dave, talk to Hypothrml, he took my aftermarket shiftboot so will probably has his kicking around. Even ask Bubb's hes got an aftermarket one as well...

props.

2 reasons why I chose this particular boot:

- red stitching goes with the red stitching on the seats
- more importantly, the boot was $15 brand new at SLS

Might I suggest getting rid of the string tie and flip the neck inside just a little and use a tie-rap to hold it from underneath. It will look cleaner and still hold no problem.

UPDATE!!!

So I've done the second shifter. It's painted black, not sure if I like the black or not yet but I'm happy with the shape and finish. Its less cylindrical now because the bottom is now tapered. The grip itself is knurled.

The size is perfect, and its a little shorter than stock. Definitly happy with the result.

3GFX

Lets see...Material plus machine time. Techinically it would cost about $100. Its aluminium, one off piece. But I only paid for material.
