Automation: Not for where I am, try Omron in Scarborough. They're pretty big for automation.

I hate banks. No hookups. Best bet is to network like crazy.

metal stamping and most industrial jobs aren't the hottest thing in the economy unfortunately.

Anytime anyone needs security services for anything, let me know! If you've got your own insurance, I've got myself and experienced (between 3 and 20 years) guys always looking for contracts. If not, I work with a couple of insured guard companies that can supply guards for events and sites as needed. Also, I'm looking to hire some guys for clubs in Toronto and bars in the GTA...if you're licensed, in good shape, and you're experienced, we've got a good paying job waiting for you.

As for myself looking for work, if anyone knows of any municipal/provincial social services jobs (aka government/private management) please post here or PM me! I've already got a job in the private sector in this field, so I'm only looking for government positions or private management...I'll work for any region, I am willing to relocate, and I have 3 years experience.

Like IT Security Audit? IT Audit?

Depends what the requirements are. What type of audits are needed to be conducted? I've most recently had experience with inventory (in/out/present) audits (shipping yard, security perspective), but have also been responsible for audits on the integrity of intranet/office servers, and updating software/manually noting and debugging major errors. I've got loads of experience with a variety of software all noted on my resume. I'm also a fast learner with leadership qualities and a plethora of goals in life!

Think again Ami, think again!

And patrols, enforcement LOL ninja please! For the purpose of this thread, I've got quite a bit of "physical security" experience (from clubs to close protection, warehouses to commercial), but that's just because those contracts are easy for me to land based on my appearance (my wealth of training also tends to be helpful). My knowledge in investigations, analysis/consulting, risk management, financial planning as well as my human resources experience (gained over 3 years in various security roles as a sole proprietor, 2 years in social services, and 2 years in a management role), my college (soon to be university level) education and my winning personality that are really my main selling points! ;)

Really? I've worked in 2 malls and frequented a third and all security there carry handcuffs, wether they use them or not in not sure but still.

Either way. You seem to be saying not patrol, but haven't answered the question asked about the type of security needed.
Security is a very broad employment realm. Could mean anything from building concierge to secrete service to IT.

I'm the one who asked the question about the type of security needed, lol, I answered OPs reply to my bump post...

And anyone guard or otherwise can carry handcuffs, they're not restricted weapons. Using them on the other hand is a whole other matter. Without the appropriate training, misuse of handcuffs can land you a lawsuit, and potentially a charge for assault with a weapon (depending how bad you f up). Now, the cops at the malls you attend may or may not carry handcuffs, and that would be up to their superiors/client (the mall) and how much they're willing to pay for insurance, well-trained guard wages, etc... It also depends on the company that the mall contracts, and what they want their guards to be doing (ie "mall copping" and calling the cops for every loud teenager vs. making arrests). Like you said, security is a fairly broad term, and an even broader industry...and just because buddy at your mall carries cuffs at work doesn't mean he's supposed to btw lol

EDIT: The level of risk in the environment the mall resides in also plays a major role in this. Go to yorkdale, the security carry cuffs, the eatons centre they don't (last I saw), galleria mall at lansdowne and dupont, they carry cuffs, but the yonge and eglinton centre they don't.

Ya that's why I said I don't know if they use them. All three malls security were owned by the same company ( forget the name at the moment. ) and the ones I used to chat with we're cops waiting for a police position.

By question, I was referring to the IT audit/ security question that ami responded to. I may have missed it but I didn't think you responded to that question that was aimed at you originally. Could be the asker is looking for a job in that field you can help with. Edit again. I did miss your response. It's late and in tired. Sorry.

Edit. Respond to your edit.

What funny is I worked at yorkdale and frequented the gal ( lived right near it)
Also dufferin mall.

Lansdowne and dupont, but not in a security role so don't walk up to my friends in uniform and ask them if they're me LOL they won't be happy. Do you drive your three around there a lot? If you recently got stared down by a guy at a crosswalk on lansdowne as you gunned it through the lit up crossing, I've seen you before, LOL.

Actually that may have been me. Lol. Not on purpose though. It was like 2 weeks ago and the lights came on just as I was paying attention to the ass behind me, he almost side swiped me going through the lights at DuPont there. Didn't have time to stop without being rear ended and seen noone moving yet so I hit the gas and made the left.

I lived at 806 lansdowne for 2 years, in the standard lofts there. Right behind the dollar store.

Not that im proud of it, but I am a mall cop and we do carry cuffs, and cuffs only. We are all fully trained and recert every year. We can only carry once we have been certified (at my job at least).

And for the record I have dealt with almost any situation you can think of as security. Most people dont believe the stuff that we have to deal with on a regular basis. Especially in such a "prestige" mall.

There's a list on the ministry website (community safety and correctional services) of criminal convictions that prohibit you from becoming a security guard. Basically, if you didn't commit arson, kidnap someone, lie in court, pretend to be a cop, or murder anyone, you can get the license.

Vinnie I'm guessing you work at vaughan mills? I know mall security deals with a lot of bs, especially in a high volume commercial environment like that. People always undervalue security, until someones hit and run them in the parking lot or stolen their purse.

I'm in the Fire Protection field, specifically Sprinkler Fitting Apprentice. However, I've come to learn the industry doesn't employ a lot of quality people with integrity. It's one or the other, apparently. So, from what I've learned recently, I seem to be the integrity portion, thus I am out of work temporarily.

I was referred to come here on the off chance someone knows a guy who knows a guy. The union is working on getting me placed with a second company, but life would be easier with a push in the right direction. I'm almost wanting to just take some time off from real life and hard work, seeing as I haven't ever been on a vacation, or traveling at all for that matter.

Oh life, ye have such a funny way of pretending to make sense.

Graduating in April with Finance + Economics specialist + Accounting major from Rotman Commerce. Looking for a corporate finance job. Analyst positions, risk management, sell side or buy side is fine but prefer to stay away from wealth management as a career path (would rather do modeling or face to face meeting over cold calling).
Currently looking for a job. Resume + cv + references readily available. Would also love to do real estate acquisition valuation/analysis and entry level consulting.

I know this is a long shot on here but I see bhrm posting finance related jobs so its possible!

$3650 upon study completion. We have a special area where we expose you with birch pollen as if you were just sitting outside with birch trees around you. If you do stay for that testing we provide food. :)

Times have changed. Alot of places I have applied to are offering up to $20/hr. While im not picky about pay, I wouldnt be willing to do an internship if it means I have to find a place to rent, cover all living expenses, and expect to do so while working my ass off somewhere that doesnt pay me. Yes im doing it for the experience but unless im working for some next level company that would look superbly nice on my resume ( rarely the case in Ontario for my field)... I dont see it being worthwhile to add more debt on top of OSAP.

That said if the placement is in the GTA, and not somewhere in lets say... the 519 area... I am more than willing to work as an unpaid intern as It would be just like commuting to college... except im not paying $7000 to go there :P

What are your qualifications?

Im a 3rd year Industrial design student. Im actually flexible with what I can do as is the people who approve the work placements for my program. Ive heard of previous years working at various shops that do fabricating, other minor design work and alot of places i have applied for are looking for cad work to be done or even some graphic design work ( We are required to learn both Photoshop and Illustrator quite extensively and I can say Im pretty good with it).

Qualifications wise im familiar with the following programs:
Solidworks
Adobe Photoshop
Adobe Illustrator
Autodesk 3DSMax
and some experience with Autodesk Alias.

Im also a fast learner and can easily learn new programs as I am aware there are other CAD programs out there as well such as ProEngineer.

as well I can sketch and render drawings ( digital or marker renderings), and am pretty experienced with model making ( have used all sorts of materials in the past including several types of plastic and wood as well as sheet metal).

Again im fairly flexible with the kind of work as long as its related to the field of design and is approved by my work placement professor.

You've been looking since before November 2014 for a placement in May of 2015, which is next month, and you haven't been picked up by any companies as yet.

I'd say you'd need to be a little more flexible if you hope to have any chance of securing a summer position. I'm sure the companies that do offer $20/hr to a summer student have long since picked someone for the position.

Sorry but it's the truth

Sorry that came out wrong. What I meant to say was that while there are big companies out here doing design work... theres even bigger companies that do most of their design work ( especially automotive companies) in either the States or somewhere in Europe ( as well as Japan). Its a known fact that the automotive design industry in Toronto is pretty small with a handful of good companies that Id love to work for ( Ive already applied to /contacted 2 of them). that said... if we look outside of automotive design, we have some big companies that do have their design offices nearby.

Also SomeGuy : The way I act around you guys is different from how I am in a professional environment. Although Im still not getting at how what I have posted on other threads has to do with me professionally speaking.

Honestly Ive thought about it a bit and Im just concerned that traffic can greatly affect my commute ( assuming i am working during normal business hours) upwards of an hour of delays. I hate to be the one that shows up late and If I had to work somewhere outside of the toronto area id either risk being late every day or add even more financial debt to myself paying for rent for somewhere nearer. I could find a part time job to do on the weekends but I doubt it would be enough unless I also work evenings ... although that might not be a possibility because in my field theres always the possiblity of tight deadlines and lots of overtime and hard work. Part of the reason why over half the people in my program dont have a part time job during the semester... there simply wouldnt be enough time to get any work done if you did.

but I apreciate the helpful advice...

It all comes down to time management. Worried about being late for work? Easy, leave your home early enough so you're at least 5-10 minutes early.
I really hope you're not worried about driving, because it's not a big deal, that's why you have a vehicle. Your should drive it more than you clean it. But I'm only saying that if you're worried about wear and tear of you're car.
There's always a million excuses for why you can't or shouldn't do something.

In this day and age everything can come back to haunt you. Nothing is untraceable, it's easy to put on a a mask or act differently on the Internet, but companies and hiring managers are always looking for applicants who slip up online. Behaviour online vs behaviour in real world, it matters.

Im accustomed to driving long distances so that doesnt bother me.
I also dont mind leaving earlier ( If I have an 8 am class I usually leave at around 6)

Its more of a financial thing. Currently my parents are supporting me as I dont really have the time for a part time job during the school year ( unless I dont sleep at all) but I really feel bad about adding any further financial burden to them from what it is now. I already spend about $50/ week in gas and maybe $10-15 for food... Adding more frequent visits to the pump just makes me feel guilty about the whole thing.

Working part time with work isnt an option either as stated earlier.

Become the neighbourhood pharmacist. Or work a corner. Theres many ways to make money. You could do things for people on the side. Like pick up their kids from school or become a speedy or anything really.

I'm in KW and we have people who commute from Niagara, Toronto, Brantford, London, etc to come into the office every day. You need to go where the work is, deal with it. During university and studying I worked 20-30 hours per week on top of school...heck the time you spend posting on here (*cough* friday thread *cough*) or the time you spend washing your car, could be put to working and you could easily pay for the commute.

The way you conduct yourself just shows how immature you are, regardless of if you're acting professional or not on here, it shows. The thing is you're competing with tons of other people for these positions and you need to be the best. We get thousands of applications each month of which we might only interview a few dozen of which we only hire a handful and we're not a big name highly sought after company either.

In short, take what you can get and suck up the financial burden for a few months.

This is a good point. I also worked 24h a week. I got lucky and found a job where I could do two 12 hour shifts every weekend. It fit my school schedule and paid quite well for what it was($16/hr). There really is no excuse.

Humber Industrial Design grad here. I haven't been active in this forum in years and have since sold my speed3, but this thread has irked me.

You're complaining about not being able to find a placement for this summer. I started looking in January to find mine. You left this far too late.

You've got it easy for commuting my friend. You have a car. I had to commute by GO bus, and transfer countless times to get from Etobicoke to Pickering. And when my landlord evicted us after he sold our house, I had to move back to Burlington. My commute went from an hour, to two hours everyday. It was the worst summer of my life. But I did it because I had to.

And for your complaining about not having a part time job during the school year? I went through the same program you are right now. I had a part time job, had no financial support from my parents, and still graduated with honours. If you're in third year, and worried about getting enough sleep, good luck with your thesis project in fourth year. Kiss your sleep goodbye.

I know it's possible. I did it myself. My advice would be to change your attitude. If you're serious about making it in that field, you're going to have to be prepared to commute and move to where the work is.

Ive been searching since december but Im still looking. Ive already applied to several places and am planning on applying to a few others. I just posted on here to see if i can gain any more possible leads.

And when my landlord evicted us after he sold our house, I had to move back to Burlington. My commute went from an hour, to two hours everyday. It was the worst summer of my life. But I did it because I had to.

I drive an hour every day to campus. Yes my worrying about an increased commute was ridiculous and I have since accepted that I am going to suck it up and go for it. Again I just prefer if it was closer. Im open to opportunities farther away but If I had two offers and one was closer... id go for the closer one ( ofcourse I cant be picky and Ill go for whatever I can find now).

It was based off a recommendation from a prof to the whole class that it is better to not have a job during the year for most people. Im not going to say Im the best... but the extra time helps. Also not to worried about getting enough sleep provided I get enough in a 48 hour period that I can drive safely to campus and back. I am aware of thesis being time consuming and am prepared for that. This semester has been pretty packed too ( not complaining here) and There hasnt been a week in the past month and a half that I havent pulled atleast one or 2 all nighters every week.

I know it's possible. I did it myself. My advice would be to change your attitude. If you're serious about making it in that field, you're going to have to be prepared to commute and move to where the work is.

Again I am willing to do the commute/ move if I have to. I am not too worried if it ends up like that. Im accustomed to long distance driving time wise. Again I already commute about an hour every day ( Can be up to 2 hours if its a snow storm in the middle of winter)

Apreciate the advice though. I realize I was in the wrong and am changing my attituide when it comes to working for no pay.

No unless they see excessive amounts of those drugs. If you take them multiple times a day for a few weeks, you may get a follow up from them asking what the issue is, etc. But they are more interested in other types of substance abuse.

Edit: what industry are you working in that requires the drug testing in canada? I know there's a lot of oil/gas companies out west that do drug testing.

there are actually two ways to get in. you need to get all the requirements. not the hardest, just highschool. what makes it hard is that they take the best, aka extra schooling, extra licenses, only certain times in the year, etc.etc. out of the 15 in my intake class for that month, more than half were sponsored.
http://www.electricalapprenticeship.ca/apply/construction.html

or, you find a journeyman/foreman/company to vouche for you and get you in (sponsored).

hardest part is getting in. then you take courses and school along the way every year.

My first job was delivering papers. 5c per paper, 1.5c for the first flyer, 0.5c for every flyer after that. 48 houses, I made about $60 a month give or take, and about $800 in my first year.

Not true at all. It certainly helps, but it is not required (https://www.cusw.ca/apprenticeship-info). The only time the schooling is required is when applying for apprentice positions at places like OPG. But when applying directly at a Union, very rarely is there any requirement past high school.

For others interested in apprenticeship positions, keep an eye on this website (Hydro One): http://www.selfmgmt.com/clients/hydroone/ Every 6 months they seem to post looking for Power Line Technician Apprentices and the pay is pretty good.

I applied for a job back in Feb and got a call in April for follow up.
I made it through pre-interview, interview, aptitude test, and other tests for a job I applied for.
I got a call recently saying I am definitely on the list for October start date, and will get another call in August for a conditional offer.
Condition being I pass medical and background check.

Would a company back out last minute? I mean can I have some piece of mind?

Of course they'd back out last minute. I'd spend a lot of time worrying, if I were you.

Nothing is for sure until the day you start. And even then, employment can end at any time (company goes out of business, you get fired for being sucky, etc).

Hey there,
Yes it's in the written contract as part of the change over process for my current job.

It's not like I can give my two weeks and start with the new one. The whole process is long and drawn out with where I work. And once I'm out, I'm out for good, no turning back. I can't go back on my 60 days notice

Would it be silly for me to ask my potential new employer to give me something in writing?

Dude. Give them you normal 2 weeks notice and call in sick for the last part of it. What are
they gonna do? Fire you?

Legally you don't have to give any notice. Don't think you're bound by any sort of contract. They can't FORCE you to work.

If I were in his position I wouldn't even consider giving notice until I had it in writing in my hands. The point was he shouldn't count on a job, potential or not, until he has the offer in his hands AND has accepted it.

Alright fair enough, I'm still employed and earning, so no need to pull any triggers on anything.
I'll wait it out and see what happens come late summer. Thank you.

Girds Kiyomi and anyone else that wants to get into the electrical trade

the joint apprenticeship council is currently conducting their annual intake of potential apprentices. this is late notice because it was by chance that i emailed my JAC counselor, and her automatic reply sent me a message regarding their annual intake.

to anyone that wants to apply, please read the following, because this is important information that they won't tell you:

1) do not quit your job even after receiving your acceptance letter. it took me just less than a year for them to call me to go in for orientation. only then can you quit your job (they will let you know about a month in advance)

2) once you get in, you're basically doing an extra year of "pre apprenticeship" that is NOT counted towards your official apprenticeship. it's basically a very long probation period. you WILL, however, get full benefits (100% health, 100% dental, $2k for massage therapy and such, etc...).

your starting pay is either 13 or 14 dollars, i'm not sure how much it went up by this year, so it's not ideal if you have a family.

3) if you can't hold 20-30 pounds constantly over your head, this probably isn't for you. if you get into high rise construction, like i am in now, you'll do lots of concrete chipping as an apprentice.

4) if you're easily offended, this isn't for you. this is, after all, construction.

i wanted to list those things specifically because my company recently had a pre-apprentice that complained to the union because he didn't receive a personal respirator, that the work site was not clean, that he almost died because one of our journeymen accidentally hit him with the end of a fishtape. it was a real fiasco.

anyways, here's the link. the intake only runs until June 4

hex , thx but im already in 353. im second term.

i agree with #4 lol.
I got picked on quite a bit when i was a pre-apprentice. At the end of a hard week, one of the journeyman i was working under was giving me a really hard time trying to make me quit as per usual. (quiting during your pre-apprentice year means you leave the union/trade). I had, had enough and i walked up to him a foot from his face and said nothing for a good 10 seconds. Honestly could have been bad, but nothing happened. truthfully, i felt bad after. but ever since then, no ones really bothered me except for joking around.

its almost like they keep poking at you until they get a reaction. ive noticed this in all the trades for apprentices.

sorry, i tagged you in the post cause i knew you were talking about the trade.
i'm second year as well!

i'm lucky that i'm not with journeymen like that. for most of my apprenticeship, my foreman has pretty much "claimed" me in the company (i work for a 200-person company, hence why he can claim me). the guy pretty much watches out for me and gives people sh!t if they give me sh!t, and a lot of the people in the company knows that i'm his apprentice.

hex thanks for the info! I've decided I'm gonna goto post secondary for that trade hopefully in the fall to gain some experience in that field.

to be totally honest with you Girds , i went to post secondary at durham college for the electrical technician - instrumentation and control and got my 2 year diploma with honors in it. it didn't have any affect on my application since they only need high school courses. i know plenty of people that went from doing business, human resources, and other university courses and just went into the trade because they couldn't find any work.

to give you advice: save that tuition money (probably close to $5K) and apply to the JAC. you'll be sent to trade school and learn exactly what you did in post secondary.

hex thanks for the info! I've decided I'm gonna goto post secondary for that trade hopefully in the fall to gain some experience in that field.

i dont want to discourage you, but the people who do this usually end up wasting time and money. the reason being, you have to go to school to learn it all over again and its paid for by the union. not only that, but taking those post secondary trade schools doesnt mean you get in the union automatically. In fact, many company's who are willing to take on apprentices for sponsorship want someone with a clean slate and havent learnt anything.

I told this to a friends friend of mine a couple years ago and to a few others. all of them are still trying to get in 353. just giving you a heads up.

now if you specialize, like electronics/motor controls, security/ fa, etc, that can be a good asset. but again, it doesnt mean your getting in any easier.

hex Kiyomi my big this was I didn't take any electrical courses in high school. I only took the automotive courses. What would you recommend I do

Im pretty sure you need gr12 math, physics, and english. you can check the jac site to be sure the exact courses you need. if you dont have one or more of these courses, you can do correspondence to get these course credits. this only takes about 3-4 months to do if you work hard. you dont need electrical courses.

hex

Girds

did you take a look at the website that i posted?

i didn't take any electrical courses in high school either. my high school didn't offer any shop classes other than woodworking, which i also didn't take.

here's a copy and paste from the website:

Application Requirements Education
You MUST provide an Official High School Transcript (original or certified true copy ) indicating successful completion of High School AND that you were Granted a High School Diploma.

Minimum requirements are that you MUST have ONE credit from each high school subject listed. You may still apply if you have two (2) of the three (3) required courses

English: ENG4C, ENG4U, ENG4G, ENG4A
Physics: SPH3U, SPH4C, SPH4U, SPH4G, SPH4A
Math: MCT4C, MGA4U, MDM4U, MCV4U, MHF4U, MCB4U, MTT4G, MAT4A, MCR3U, MAP4C (with minimum 70%), MCF3M (with minimum 65%)

If you are currently enrolled in High School or have a G.E.D., please contact the JAC offices for further application instructions.

if you want to get in now, and potentially have an electrical job in about a year to a year and a half, now would be a good time to do it since it ends tomorrow.

there is absolutely no experience required to get into the trades. of course, they would like you to be mechanically inclined (as in be able to use a level, use a drill, use hand tools).

believe it or not, there are a lot of people that don't know how to use the simplest of tools.

Asyed, don't get mad because you've probably heard it from others before, but finding a job is a full-time job in itself. My suggestion is to put all your time and effort into it, so spend less time on your car and more on trying to get in touch with people and places.

I'm a graphic designer myself and in my last year of college I decided to start my own business. After graduation, I was still working retail at a hockey store and I quit just to light a fire under my own butthole and force myself to find a design job. Freelancing is difficult and risky, but it helped to find connections and put some quality work into my portfolio. All of my job searches were dead-ends so I set my portfolio on fire and changed my approach; I rebuilt my website and filled it with brand new work and then I started going to advertising and design industry events where creative directors said my portfolio was one of the strongest they had seen. Even with all that, I still had trouble finding an interview until I eventually landed an internship at an ad agency. That place turned out to be a shithole but then I got hired as the lead designer on Sportsnet's NHL graphics.

Long story short: if you're not getting anywhere it means your portfolio isn't good enough. Slave away at it until it's where it needs to be and then take it 10 notches higher. Good luck.

PS. Feel free to PM me some of your stuff and I'll give you feedback if you want.

I get what you are saying at. Alot of people have told me the same thing and I agree 100%. For the most part I think my portfolio is ok for the time being as I have already gotten 3 interviews from it. The problem is that the market is extremely competitive and there arent many jobs left in my field now on the internship basis. Some people are just naturally more talented at things but I strive to match them when I can. Im just posting here in hopes of expanding my job search beyond the normal listings / trying to network a bit. Havent been finding much on kiji/linkedin/indeed lately. Every little lead helps.
