"popup" dash unit?

Hi all,

I rented a Mazda 6 (not sure which year (2006?), which trim) about a year ago before I purchased my 3, but it had a unit in the middle above the radio and instrument cluster that was a "storage" area...

You pressed a button to release a "hatch" and it popped up. I used it to put my sunglasses in .. (and lost them because I forgot them in there, lol)

Does anybody know what this is, exactly?
Has anyone seen it on a Mazda 3, if so, what Trim package?
What are the dimensions of the unit?

I'm interested in finding one of these for a little project I thought of.

And how are you going to manage that? I'm sure there are a LOT of people aroudn here that would be very interested in one if it's $500 cheaper! Well, I can think of at least one...... :)

Alright, maybe not THAT much cheaper, but I'm pretty creative :)

I've seen a few defective DVD players (working screens) pop up. The low profile of these panels makes it perfect, the only problem is the plastic housing ... With some of the soldering engineering skills I picked up in university, I've been able to get these working as displays on a few Linux boxes I have sitting around doing nothing ;)

Go to japanparts.com and look for part# 143-110-003. Fits all MZ3/MS3. Or the guy selling his on M3F is a pretty good deal too.
