Hey I am looking into clearing up some space in the engine bay and redistributing weight. Wondering how hard it would be to relocate the battery to the back of the car? I'm thinking putting it where the spare tire is. I don't think many speeds have done this at this point.

Is it just a matter of long wires and fishing it to the back? And do you think the battery needs to be in a special box or wrapping?

Haha just ask McGuyver! He had his whole interior out last time I was at his place with a huge 0 (zero) gauge wire running to the trunk, to his new battery local :chuckle

Oops don't know if i was supposed to tell anyone that!

You need a DOT casing with a breather tube to exit from the vehicle..

Try picking up an OEM Cobalt box or something similar from a junk yard. They have their battery mounted in the trunk from factory.. It is also strapped down..

There is also a special way your "suppose" to run the power wire, but to each their own.

1+ ! Just gotta make sure its vented and run a good quality 0 gauge wire to the battery.

somebody should come up with a kit to do this.

optima yellow tops is an option to lose weight...still may want to relocate the battery....

yeah that way the weight is centered to the car :)

yeah...long day...

it's natural to want to put it there, but if you use the stock battery, you'd have to tip it sideways to fit (a big no-no, I think)? maybe get a smaller battery AND relocate then? I think the braille one is needed since:

The B106 is a sealed unit that can be mounted in any position safely using its adjustable automotive terminal posts & is approved for racing by all major sanctioning bodies.

I don't know the size of this but it might be able to fit on the right-side of the hatch/trunk where there's an indent.

Here is a picture of my last car with the battery relocated. This was using a Taylor relocating kit.

apparently, if you go to a HPDE where they "tech" you under the hood and trunk, you'll be req'd to have a cut-off switch if you relocate the battery to the back...and yeah, I can't see ptfire's relocation kit fitting in the spare tire well.

I found summit makes a kit at about 110$

http://store.summitracing.com/partdetail.asp?autofilter=1&part=SUM-G1231-K&N=700+115&autoview=sku

Not sure what a cut off switch is or how hard it is to make one?

Fobio
10-09-2008, 09:42 AM
it's basically an on/off switch for you car that cuts power off from the battery...you'd want a quality one for many obvious reasons...hehe...

there are some Honda relocation kits that aren't boxed but I don't know how safe those are...

ptfire

They have to be boxed, vented and have an external shut off switch to run at the drag strip. I ran it at track days so I didn't have a shut off switch.

mleblond
10-09-2008, 10:57 AM
when would you use the switch?

when bad things happen, like a crash...

hehe...but still

PS. Mods, this is where I'd click the "No Thanks/Disagree" button.

I'd rather relocate my engine to the back and leave the battery up front...you know, like a Porsche C4S Cabriolet... ;)

yeah but you should go pro and get a proper flip-switch...ones that has a RED flip cover (like they use to fire rockets/missiles) and a flip-switch under it...

interesting.....but where would you mount that? sticks out way to much for my liking ... maybe in the arm rest?

mleblond
10-09-2008, 11:35 AM
maybe.... ;) the gt3071r looks like a nice option for the future...but I am looking for room for something else too ;)1 step at a time they say :)

Fobio
10-09-2008, 11:37 AM
something like that doesn't need to be mounted in plain view (this can in fact be a great way to reset your ecu)...beside DSC button? maybe even under or on the side the steering column? Not armrest: you don't want to run wires thru it cuz it's a piece that gets removed for installs regularly...but out of the way so you don't hit it accidentally...

NHRA rules state that if the battery is not in the stock location you must have an EXTERNAL cut off switch which cuts off the electrical system and must also stop the car from running.

yes i did move my battery in to the trunk and i removed all the interior to run the power1 wire under the carpet and ended up just behind the rear seat on the drivers side. It is a sealed no maintenece battery (aftermarket BMW battery haha) mounted in the trunk with wood but i am not done yet with my trunk but one step at a time haha.

my SS/SC never had a cut-off or kill switch.. maybe because it was factory?

Ya my friend did it on his 85 malibu and he has a big cut off switch on his bumper. We turn his car off a lot when he is not looking. :chuckle

My bmw does not have a cut off either, and you are right because it was factory.

why would you need a vented box when you can just get a spiral celled battery???, then all you need to do is run the wire and have it sit there.... optima's look good as they are neways.

cool mod - I never knew some car batteries could be so heavy!

I had to pull the one from my accord the other day and decided to throw it on the bathroom scale for kicks - it weighed almost 45lbs !

Personally I would never put a battery in the back in my hatch unless it was a Dry Cell battery, for many reasons, but the most important is because of the venting, which lead acid batteries will do quite often. On a sedan since your basically seperated by the back seat it may be okay but still pushing it.
At least with a dry cell i.e (No Liquid) there is no worries about venting, cracks, leaks, damage or placement....it's just a much safer route to go!!

Mind you they cost almost double of a conventional battery but will last 2 to 3 times longer and give better performance~basically due to more lead content. :)
