View Full Version : Who has used either Krown or Rustcheck and has rust
I am just wondering how many people have rust on their cars that have used either Rust check or Krown.
So if you have rust and you had your car either rust checked or Krowned from new please specify which you used.
I just want to make sure that i am not wasting my money by geting my car krowned every year.
eg.

Krown, from what I have heard, is the more relaible of the options out there. However it is also one of the more expensive. You get what you pay for and with cars why be cheap - it will only come back to bite you in the ass!

doesnt krown have a warranty? if rust appears they will fix it? (if you sprayed from day 1)

I don't think Krown charges more than Rustcheck. I pay $130 per year to Rustcheck but you are right. I have noticed that people who have been Krowned haven't been reporting rusting issues as much.

There are a couple of people on the main corrosion thread who have krowned their car since day 1 and still have rust. And apparently were upset that krown refused to do anything to help them when their car started showing signs.
:(
But, you have a 2008... mazda says they've fixed it right! Supposedly you have nothing to worry about... :whoa
I have also tried dealing with Krown Rust Control as they to they too supposedly have a warranty that covers against rust. I have had my car treated by them every fall since 2005, but they too do not want to step up and take any responsibility for the rust that is occurring on my car. Although I was upset that Krown was not willing to do anything to help me out, I found it very interested that the guy I was speaking with knew exactly where the rust was occurring on my car as soon as I told him the make of the car. He didn’t even need me to explain the problem. He told me that several Mazda 3 owners had already called him complaining about the exact same problems.

my mom's honda accord has diamond kote and it's showing signs of rust. i.e. hood latch, under drivers side door, passenger side rear well and rust in side the trunk. We'll see how good their "warranty" is. Honestly, I'm very skeptical about any of the "rust proofing" companies warranties.

i went to krown when i bought my used 05. i think their policy is that within one year of spraying, if there is any rust within that time period, they will fix it. so if you sprayed say aug 5th 09, i think they cover your car until aug 5th 10.

I've been using the Krown method since day 1, and every year since...So far no signs of rust (Knock on wood). But I'm wondering if Krown or Rust-check or any rust protection will help in the case of the Mazda3, seeing as the rust seems to be caused possibly by poor metal/prep or paint bonding done during manufacture....I guess time will tell.
Sorry Aris didn't notice the eg. on your orig post :)
As for the warranty given by companies such as Krown, it's a good idea to read their warranty very carefully as there is a very strict regimen you must follow to hold the warranty valid.

You are right, no rust proofing will stop whats happening to our M3s.
If you have surface rust because of the poor metal or even stone chips etc as stated above no warranty will cover it. I believe this has been mentioned before in other threads more than a few times...:bang
BTW read the fine print from your rust proofing applicator
Last year when i was going to get my car sprayed i was going to go with Rust check since i been using it on my truck since day one..and i never had any issues *mind yoou the truck never seen a winter*with the product so i was going to get my car done with rust check but they would not offer the warranty card so i left and went to Krown since they gave me the warranty card.
After seen Redraptor have rust after using rust check since day makes me wonder if any of the rust proof is worth it or a waste of money:whoa

somewhat off topic... but I just got my car Krown for the first time (I bought it used) and I was told the warranty card would be MAILED to me... is that true? Anyone know how long to wait for it?

I'm not sure last year when i took my car in for the first time they filled out my waranty card and i signed it and they gave it to me to bring every year when i bring the car in..i just went on tuesday and had my car sprayed for the second year and they filled out the date and signed it.
So by them telling you that they will mail it might be a lie?

Hmmm maybe this is a new way around the rust issue...
Just pay the $130/year (that's nothing!!!) and when the farkin rust comes back AGAIN when the Mazda warranty is up, just blame krown and make them fix it?? :chuckle Yah I'm sure they'll say no if it's in all the common areas. Which would confirm that there's really no point if they refuse to cover these areas.

My problem is if i am paying for Krown rust proofing every year and then my car starts to rust then it proves that the product does not work..so say in 5 year i will be out $625 ...plus i will still have to get the car painted
When i hear people like redraptor who had his car rust checked from day one and it still rusts..what was the piont all these years he paid.

Yah but that's what I mean, if they give a warranty that lasts for 1 year, get it rust proofed once a year, and if rust starts to form bring it to them and be like... "SEEEEE???????" And they'll have to fix it under the warranty.... no? So you're not out anything except for what you paid over the years, which still works out to a lot less than you would pay to have the car repainted yourself ($1000+)

My aunt has a 2001 Protege which she has traded in for a 2010 Corolla LE last week. She had her car RustChecked from Day #1 for 5 years. Then after the 5th year, she did it every other year. Her rear wheel wells look worse than a car that has never been rustproofed. It was bubbling everywhere...
I really don't think RustCheck or Krown will do anything for Mazdas. Having said that...it "might" slow it down as my rust isn't as bad as others.
I will still RustCheck the car this year but it will most likely be the last year I rustproof it. I'm going to accept the rust and just live with it. Its not a battle you can win and at the end of it, you'll be out lots of money but still be left with rust.

I didn't exactly say that "no rustproofing will stop whats happening to our MZ3s", I said; "I'm wondering" and "time will tell"...As I also mentioned, my '05 with four winters under her belt still shows absolutely no sign of rust, even underneath!....Also not all people with MZ3s are finding rust either, so it could be a case of a large "Bad Batch" of something....What exactly who knows? Except for maybe Mazda of course.
I've read the Krown warranty fine print, regular print, backward and forward...I know exactly what the deal is, and am confident my vehicle is under Krown's complete warranty as it stands, but, from statements some have made it's obvious some do not understand the details well...Sooo, that's why I suggested others do the same and read all warranty info carefully. :)

Wow, and it's got rust problems despite being rust-proofed??? That sucks...maybe they didn't do a good job with the rust-proofing. A lot of these places don't do very good work, otherwise (in my experience) the rust-proofing should make a major difference.

The problem is with the type of Rustproofing and the method. Most dealer rustproofing is horrible as I've mentioned in other threads, I've seen what they do and how they cover the car! It's totally useless to say the least!!.
The best method is oil spraying or as Krown calls it "Formula spraying" as thier liquid is a 'patented' product. No other product covers to the extent as theirs or works as well from what I've researched aplenty.

too funny.
rust proofing, oil spray is the best, is to stop rust from forming from the inside out not from the outside in. Mazda's rust is from the outside not from inside. If one owns the car for lets say less than 5 years don't bother.

That may be true, but you never know!? ...they (the previous owner or dealer) may have touched up the prone areas already!...Good idea would be to get a good strong light and check out the prone areas "real closely" and if it looks good, it's all good! (Not all 3s exhibit rust remember), then I suggest pay extra care when washing/waxing of same areas in the future.
Oil spraying is still a good idea (if you plan on keeping the vehicle long term), even if it doesn't come with a warranty, as it will prevent rust from occuring in more important areas such as the subframe, rockers, strut towers, braces, welds etc;.....As I've mentioned numerous times even underneath my car it still looks like new. I've seen newer 3s up on hoists which look years older then mine from the rust build-up on much of the underpinnings...and I can only point to the yearly Krown applications as the reason.

When you get out of the back doors..it is in an area where maybe your boots or leg would rub on the paint (by the molding along the rocker panels) and wear the paint off..it is on both sides same place and has now a slight bit of rust on it .. when I pick the car up I'll have to look into it further.

Couldn't agree more!
Just getting your car rust-proofed somewhere doesn't mean a thing if they don't do a good job. It's like with any other type of service that is done to your car, you need a quality product applied by qualified personnel who care about what they are doing. Even if a place offers a warranty, well if their service is shady to begin with can you imagine how they are going to act when it comes time to honour the warranty?
I've heard very good things about Krown and they were my second choice when I was looking for rust-proofing. I ended up going with a local shop in Montreal called Barry's Rust-Proofing. They are recommended by the APA and they are on old fashioned Mom and Pop place that still use grease for rust-proofing. They don't drill any holes (they remove door panels to get to the hard to reach areas) and they absolutely cover all the exposed areas. It's a lot of work (I watched them do it!) but from what I've seen from these Mazda's, it's necessary to do!
The grease itself does not drip a lot (at least in terms of dripping on your driveway) but it does drip down a bit under my doors and onto the rocker panels, etc on hot days. It's a bit of a pain but it also confirms the grease is there and ready to fight the evil rust!! :chuckle
