Hey everyone,

For the longest time, after driving the car for a while, when i put the car in neutral, the transmission sounds like a tractor... like literally a tractor.

i have the 2010 speed 3. Anyone else notice this?

I hear it often when i get home, put the car in neutral and let it run for 10 to 20 seconds before the shutting the car off. or even when grabbing a coffee from Tim Hortons drive through (the wall of the building on my left side, really amplifies the sounds, so it's much more noticeable).

Hey,

Can you be a little more detailed in the sounds you are hearing? Is there a rattling that happens every time you are off the gas and accelerator petal? Or are you just saying it is really, really loud? Are your revs in the normal range when you are at neutral? Do you have the AC engaged and/or your vent settings on window, window/floor or floor?

Sorry, just not clear to me what you mean exactly...

Sure Zoom Zoom,

No noticable additional rattling. after i put the car in neutral, the car doesn't shake or i don't hear something that might be loose. The revs look (looking at the RPM) and feel completely normal. No A/C engaged as i always leave the vent on the face/feet setting. I don't really notice it during driving, only because i usually have the music on, or there are other ambient noises drowning it out. it is alwyas noticable in a closed environment like in my garage or when i simply park the car somewhere.

In terms of the noise... think of a TDI Jetta when idling. That's actually what it sounds like. Also keep in mind that i'm assuming it's coming from the transmission, only because it happens when i put the car in neutral. It could be something completely unrelated. Any ideas are welcome, but in the meantime, i will try to record the sound this evening and post the clip to help.

I'm going to take the car in for the dash/cowel rattle (thanks to the cold weather, i'm beginning to re-live the nightmare i had last year), so i'll hve them check this sound out as well. But knowing what the problem "might" be is always good. Knowledge is power lol...

Come to think of it, it could be related to the creaking/clicking sound i've been having when accelerating from 1st to 2nd and sometimes 3rd, from a complete stop. Hmmm...

The cowl noise came back? Did they actually execute the TSB for that or just put some insulation strips in? In any case, sorry to hear.

Thanks for taking the time to detail what you meant. A sound clip would help for sure. I asked as if you had a bad rattling when off the accelerator while driving and in neutral, you likely sheared a gear or other part of something in your tranny. When that happens, you wouldn't really hear the noise under acceleration, but your car would also have difficulty holding in some gears under heavy acceleration or turning.

These DISI engines do click pretty loudly and others have complained about the regular MZ3 engines also being loud. It has been blamed from things likeloud injectors to manifold issues. The noise would certainly be amplified in a confined space. It might be worth having Jimmy to take a look and see if it is anything out of the ordinary. Jimmy sees more Speed3's than any dealer tech, so I'd recommend you take it to him for peace of mind.

To be quite honest, i don't think the TSB was ever performed... Another issue that I'll deal with in due time.

I agree and i think it's time i took my car to Jimmy.

Thanks for your input.

Forgot one very important bit of information... The sound appears when I release the clutch pedal. If I press back down on the pedal, the sound disappears. Don't know if that helps any, but thought it's important to know

sounds like it's your throw out bearing. other GenPu's have reported this on MSF (http://www.mazdaspeedforums.org/forum/f427/2010-my-throw-out-bearing-toast-66251/). Those that took it in were told that it was "normal". Take it into the dealer and report it, your car is still under warranty, might as well.
