So I got a winter beater and unfortunately its in red. I personally don't really mind it but i rather have a different color. I have already asked a few friends and they have no idea what i need to do. So i'm posting this and hopefully someone can tell me.

My question is, if i want to wrap my car in flat black or any other color other then the original color, do i have to let MTO know to change my ownership? Do I have to let insurance know? IF i have to tell MTO or insurance know, what about the people that have vinyl all over their cars? For example, how would the red bull mini let MTO or insurance know?

Any input would be good since i'm planning to wrap my own car during the winter.

Thanks in advance

The only problem with not telling the MTO is when a cop runs your plates it will come up that the car is red..and they will pull you over..i don't think you will get a ticket for it??

Well for the MTO you need to let them know because as Aris said they will see it being as a Red car in their system, good enough to suspect the car/plates are stolen

as for insurance i don't think it matters. i don't recall ever being asked my car color when shopping for insurance

When i bought my Jeep when i was in high school it was black and i painted it yellow..i only told the MTO about the colour change...when your insuraqnce runs your serial number the colur of the car will come up to the colour you changed it to

So if i end up peeling the vinyl back out, i'll have to go back to MTO to change it back right?

Yep...and it cost $10 if i'm not mistaken to change your ownership

Its a beater, sell it and find a beater you like. Or hold onto it. find a beater you like, then sell it so you're not stuck.

Wouldn't full body wrap be $$$$
For a beater, I would just get a cheap Maaco re-spray

If it's a beater, use a rattle-can and paint it flat black!

To bring out a point though, my altima was registered as a grey car for some reason, while I bought it white. I got pulled over for something else, and got a ticket for improper ownership papers as well, but was told to just get it changed at MTO and the ticket would be dropped.

I know what you guys are talking about. But the price that i get the vinyl is pretty cheap. Plus i'm doing this as a winter project with a friend in his shop so labor is free.

if you wrap 49% or less of the car in a different color - then you dont have to tell the ministry.

Don't rattle it, because if you do go to sell it at the end of winter that's a big deterrent.

I dunno if I would bother changing with the ministry really... but that's me.

Back in the day when the Ford Mustang was out with Mystichrome (multiple colours), I remember the ownership was listed as Multi for Multiple. I'm assuming that the Red Bull Mini has this designation as well and if you do a wrap, perhaps you could go after this designation if it is not just the one colour.

As for insurance, if you change it at the Ministry, you might as well notify them as well to keep things on the level.

Good luck with the Winter project and interested to see some pics of the before and end results.

doing matte white on the hood only on a white car will just look like a bad paint job with no clear lol

A buddy of mine has a bad-a$$ Audi S4 Cosworth twin turbo 425 hp freakin' rocket. He can't drive it in the winter for obvious reasons, so....

... he drives a VW Golf beater in the winter. The car was a mess, with dents, scratches, parts falling off, so he glued everything back together and went and bought 4 rattle cans of military kaki colour paint that's only available at Wal Mart. He taped off and painted the car in his driveway in a couple of hours. He lives near the Trenton air base, and you should see the stares he gets when he drives down RCAF Road. It's hilarious!

I told him he needs an Iron Cross on the hood and doors to complete the effect. (German car... get it?) :chuckle

The RedBull mini is also a commercial vehicle, so it's slightly different. They would have a different style insurance policy, and it would be listed as a decorated car in some sense.

MTO would clasify this as Silver
