hopefully got this in the right section. I recently bought my gf's(now ex) near new Nikon D3000 off her, so im getting into the whole photography stuff and currently looking for a decent tripod. just wondering if anyone has any and what make/models, really not looking to spend more then $100 for one, just need some input on what to look for in a tripod, right now futureshop has a dynex tripod that extends to 60"(5 ft tall) for $19.99, now using the saying " you get what you pay for" is making me hesitate on this

Yes you do get what you pay for. Anything that will truly handle a DSLR and last will be over $100. I've had cheaper tripods and one drop will make it useless. Those cheaper tripods will do well for small hand cams and point and shoots.

manfrotto 190XB with a 486RC2 mount. Look for something with at least a 3-5kg weight capacity so when you get into collecting lenses your tripod will support them as well.
It can be a pricey hobby, more so than modding a car.
There are at least 3 other photography thread is this forum and a few pro's lurking around.

awesome, ya right now all i got is my nikkor 18-55mm lens, but eventually going to either pick up a 55-200 or 55-300mm lens so it'll need to support that aswell

Take your time and learn with the lense you have now. Before buying know what you are looking for. Check out www.fredmarinda.com for some decent reviews.

I have the 190xprob and i can tell you that this tripod is all you'll need for half pro to pro use. I had it for about a year now and its been holding up very well. I have a full frame camera with a battery grip on it and the tripod is so sturdy and will not wobble one tiny bit.

Make sure you get a mount with a quick disconnect from your camera. I can't imagine unscrewing it each time you use it.
I only use a tripod for long exposures.. And I never pack it when I go on vacation overseas if I'm traveling alone. Though it's crazy light I can't be bothered to set it up.

My main tripod is an Induro CT-213 carbon fibre tripod legs with a Gitzo 1780 magnesium ball head. The combination is nice and light and is my third or fourth tripod/head combination (be prepared for constantly upgrading). However, instead of packing this set for my trip I decided to go a different route and packed a Manfrotto variable friction arm and a Magic Clamp. It's a bit heavier than my tripod but it far more compact, less expensive and can be used in places where a tripod is not allowed.

I love my 18-200... it is nice not having to swap lenses for a variety of shots from close to zoom. I'd recommend that one

thanks again for the inputs, i know the sling bag i bought has a lil holder part on the side for a tripod so i wouldnt need to literally carry it around or anything, but im gonna look at them and probably get whatever you guys have told me, word of mouth is the best way

If you have the 18-55mm VR lens...don't get the 55-200 OR 55-300...Get the 70-300mm VR lens...Worth your money. Your 18-55mmvr optically is better than the 18-200. If you don't mind switching lenses once in a while, save money and just add the 70-300 to your collection.
that's what I did. I'm now adding fast primes to my collection for low light. I also want the Tokina 11-16mm F2.8 wide zoom.
The Nikon f1.4 and f1.8 primes are very affordable, and work really really well.
Also, I use the Kata 3N120 sling bag/backpack and it's great. It is on sale at Henrys until the 3rd I believe...only 89.99 right now. When I got it on sale it was 99.99. GREAT bag...

Great store to check out would be 'Henry's'. It's a store dedicated to photography. On Steeles west of Yonge in a Plaza on Hilda/Steeles same Plaza as Toys r Us. Facing Steeles. (Turn in behind the McD's then make a left, you can't miss it.)

ya i've been to henry's, i go to the one in ancaster since i live in Hamilton, i've already got a bag, got the lowepro slingshot bag, screwed bestbuy over on it too, normally a $130 bag, got it for $60, they priced it wrong and i won the battle lol, as for going for the 70-300 lens instead of the 55-300 i'll look into it, again thanks for the inputs

Like a few of the posters above, I have the Manfrotto 190XPR0B with a 804RC2 3-way head. Although it may not come cheap (i think it was around $200 on sale for both), imo it is much better that you spend a bit more now as to not regret it later on. That's probably why photography is such an expensive hobby! :chuckle
Happy Shooting!

As OP mentioned around $100, you can get the Henry's HT 100 tripod. It is the velbon sherpa 200R, just branded for Henry's. Often they have sale on that and you can get for $100 or lesser with a carry case.
It's a fair enough tripod, i'd say.

What does everyone think of the Velbon Shirpa 200R?

good one. Same as HT 100. Henrys take the Velbon Sherpa 200R and brand name as HT 100
