View Full Version : Windows tinted?

Hey guys, I am going to get my windows tinted next week and I had a few questions. My county the legal limit is 50% in front, 35% in back. I was wondering if anyone has done 35% all around and did 20% on the very back window? It would be 15% under the legal limit (which I dont want to be TOO far under..) but is there much of a chance of getting a ticket for that? 35% in the fronts is not too dark at all so I'm not worried about that. Would it look weird with 20% in back? Do they normally care about the BACK window?
Thanks alot!

I wouldn't suggest knowingly doing anything illegal. But that said, I think that it shouldn't be that noticable only because the read window and the side windows are so far apart. The 15% difference between the front and back will be definately noticeable. Which country is this?
Where are you from??
In Ontario the legal limit on your front doors is 35% and the rear you can tint as dark as you want.

Just to correct you on this, but there is no specified % limit for tints on the front-side windows in Ontario, just some vague blurb about how it can't "substantially obscure" someone's view of the interior from the outside. http://www.e-laws.gov.on.ca/html/statutes/english/elaws_statutes_90h08_e.htm#s73s3

its 35% in ontario for the front & i think 4" of a windshield banner & theres no limit for the rear or backseat windows
British Columbia - No film is permitted on the driver’s compartment, right and left. Any film may be installed on the side windows behind the driver. Any film may be applied to the rear window, provided the vehicle has 2 exterior rear view mirrors.
Alberta - Same as British Columbia.
Saskatchewan - Same as British Columbia.
Manitoba - For driver’s compartment, right and left, the minimum visible light transmittance, net, is 50%. The maximum visible light transmittance, net, is 35%. For windows behind the driver’s compartment, the minimum Visible Light Transmittance, net, is 35%. Where film is installed behind the driver’s compartment, 2 external rear view mirrors are required. The net figures that are allowed are enforced at plus or minus 5%.
Ontario - For the driver’s compartment, right and left, no film can be installed that would substantially obscure visibility from the exterior. Behind the driver’s compartment, any film can be installed.
Quebec - For the driver’s compartment, right and left, the minimum Visible Light Transmittance is 70% on automotive net basis. Any film may be installed behind the driver’s compartment, provided the vehicle is outfitted with 2 exterior rear view mirrors.
New Brunswick - Same as Ontario.
Prince Edward Island - Same as British Columbia.
Nova Scotia - No film is permitted on any glazing surface.
Newfoundland - Same as Ontario.

So what's a reasonable level of tint that will discourage people from looking in your car but allow good visibility?

Hmm... every tint shop I talked to all told me the same 35%?35% is the standard "safe" tint that any shop will tell you. In the HTA though, there is no set % for what the limit is. Like DualSoul said, it only mentions vaguely about obscuring the view. The official wording basically leaves it up to the officers discretion of legal or not.

Window tinting is actually illegal in Ontario
That being said - I've had 35% all around and havent had any problems with local authorities.

Just got 20/15 on mine and completely happy with it. If pressured I could have gotten 15 on the front too, but i didn't want any hassle from the police.

I'm actually asking which level of tint will keep the goodies in my car obscured from casual thieves? I'm not really concerned about the police.
Seems like none or 35% front and 20% rear would do it? Or do I need to go darker?

If that's the case, I would go darker in the front, as 35% if a thieve would be able to see inside the car, specifically the cup holder area no problem. 20% all-around would be my recommendation in this case.

first off, everyone knows you're to keep temptations out of sight from curious eyes.... I find my 35% is dark enough at night that you can just barely see my kids seats in the back. plus shoving one's arm through smashed filmed glass would be a bit of a challenge eh?
I shoulda clarified, that I wished I did my hatch at 20%, not the rear doors... I don't find the 2-tone attractive.

I have 35% front and 15% rear and no trouble with the police. I'm loving what I got, as the 35% sides are alright (place I went to didn't recommend going any lower) and the 15% rears are great for privacy and protection from blinding headlights.

I went with 17% because that's the darkest that Jeff @ Audio Heaven could do without going completely limo. It looks great and he does great work.

Audio Heaven did my tints too. Did a great job!! Lifetime warranty.
How long untill they would settle in this weather? I got mine done today, and they look "dry dirty"... this is my first time getting tint done on a new car. And there are bubbles everywhere, but they tend to go away in certain areas slowly as I just check out the car.

I've got 35% behind the B pillar (alberta res), and I think it's a great tint. Not sure I'd go any darker. Especially with a black interior, no one can see into my back seat without an extra light source even on a bright day.

I have 35% on passenger and driver side window.... and then 15% on the rest.
I also have ceramic tints. It keeps about 60% of heat out of the car. Sure made a difference last summer.
My seats are black and those things would heat up so badly. Not also to mention, the interior of my car got so warm my 407 Transponder kept falling off my windshield cause the heat would melt the velcro tape on the window. lol
I think all cars need tint. Looks so much nicer with it. I'm so happy I did mine last summer. Worth the money!
I got 35% front 20% rear, my previous cars all had this combination and I never had a hassle from the cops. I find this level of tint dark enough at night. I think the law states you have to be able to see front occupants through the tint from outside. IIRCC the back can be as dark as you want.

It all depends on the grade of tint you apply. It ranges from the cheapest (dyed film) to ceramic and metallic. These types typically last for the lifetime of your car so it's always the better choice to invest in the more expensive option

I've got 15% front, rear and back windows... The 2 times I've been pulled over, the cops did not mention anything regarding the tints being too dark.. So, that being said, it's really up to you but I'm not saying that it's safe or whatnot.. I'm just saying that I've never been pulled over because of the tints (and I live close to a police station so there are cops everywhere)...

I know in Belleville the cheapest or life time warranty tint is $225 + tax and the mist expensive in Belleville is $290 + tax
Depending where your from it's not worth it for everyone to drive to audio heaven to get our windows tinted for $160:bang

I drive a black hatch but I'm not a huge fan of window tint because I feel it makes a black car look "too black." Same with rims. But what about 5%? I've heard of people doing that. Is it worth the money to have that do you think?

It's only illegal on the driver and navigator windows.
You can paint your rear windows completely opaque as long as you have two working side mirrors. It's in the HTA. Point and case: Vans—not minivans, real vans. Many do not have rear windows at all.

Oh yah haha... I felt the same at first, I also have a black car so I went 35%, which is super light. Kinda wish I went 23 now but I'm still happy with it. I'd suggest going either way. Tint is 100% worth the money, I feel so exposed in untinted cars now :p
