I thought the official recommendation was 5W-20?

They must have changed it in '11. My oil cap says 0W20 too.

I'm still about 5k away from my first oil change so I haven't started looking yet!

I think Jeff over at MoT indicated it was around $40 bucks to do the oil change there when I picked up my car earlier this week. Not bad pricing considering I was paying around that price before on my RSX at a local garage in Burly.

Yup...

$39.95 for an "8K Service"

Why would you go elsewhere until your Warranty is up?

Mazda is introducing 0w-20 synthetic in all of their newer vehicles.

Exactly! Even if your warranty is up $40, is still a good price!

Now if only all service intervals were $40 bucks OR be included in the price of the car! ;)

So thin?? lol

0w is the cold rating of the oil, which means it will flow better in the cold than 5w. This is very good, considering no motor oil is thin enough to protect at start-up, even in the summer. 0w will have your engine protected sooner after start-up in all weather.

20 is the operational temperature rating. This number is not affected by the cold rating. If your engine needs 20 weight oil, so that at operating temps your oil is the right viscosity, then 0w20, 5w20, or plain 20 weight will work.

Amsoil 0w20 retails for more than the cost of a dealership oil change, but is guaranteed for 40k/1 year. Total annual cost is just over half the dealer cost if you're doing 3x 8k oil changes a year. But, maintaining your warranty status becomes more work. If you want to save about $200 over the 3-year b-to-b warranty period, then go Amsoil. If you want ease of warranty claims and someone else doing the work, go to the dealer. I can't imagine anywhere else coming close to their price on a synthetic oil change.

Wow, this means synthetic is now the price or regular oil at a Mazda dealership?

I wonder what the actual fuel economy gains is? I know Honda has been trying to upsell for a little while now

Umm, where exactly does it say 'synthetic'? I sure do not see it anywhere in that poster. There's no way Mazda would be selling a full synthetic oil change for $40. Oil easily costs $25, add the filter, gasket and labour.

its not on the poster but its under the synthetic oil heading/tab. maybe they didnt put it on the poster because dealers are still offering a separate synthetic service for more $$$?

The proof is in the numbers, a 0w rating is impossible to reach with a conventional or semi-synthetic blend oil.Meaning only a 'true' full synthetic can reach the specification of 0W...It's just too bad Mazda does not reveal any info on the oil such as a spec sheet or MSDS sheet.

BITOG forums say (according to their local mazda dealer) that it's a Petro Canada 0W-20 re-branded to Mazda, whether this is true or not, nobody seems to know yet. It would make sense to me though, Petro Canada supposedly supplies Mazda's semi-synth blend.

Yeah I was reading some posts and links, several people have quoted it's a Petro brand, even going as far as to say it's only grp 3 oil...that I would assume considering the price. But without documentation it's still a mystery.

If Petro-Canada does supply Mazda's oil then it is almost certainly a Group III synthetic. According to the info on Petro-Can's website high quality Group III lubricants are their specialty, no mention of Group IV or PAO except where they claim performance similar to PAO based oils.
