Its low enough that you will need to slow down to take those steep entrances. Picking up my FR-S early July if everything goes right.
Congrats and I think you might be the first TM3 member with the FR-S. Make sure you post up pics!

Not 100% but I am thinking about it. I test drove the FR-S a couple of weeks ago. Not as powerful as I thought it would be but fast enough. The seats (front) and the tach are amazing looking! Other interior bits are meh. They only had the auto for me to test but it was actually pretty good. It's blips the throttle and rev matches when you down shift. Handling felt very nice too! If I do get it, it will most likely be the 2014 model but I need to figure out if I will really need the backseats. If so, I am going to have to look elsewhere.

Screw the back seats......all that matters is the driver. If your moving from a hatchback or sedan to a coupe, prepare to make some sacrifices. But cmon, coupes look so much hotter! haha

Nice, sounds exactly like what I did, CPE tow plate, Diode Dynamcis LED Stage 3 Kit, KDM emblems and swapped the halogen fogs to HID's! Add springs, spacers, sway bar kit, CPE intake, CPE downpipe, Mishimoto catch can, wrapped headlights, fogs, tails and roof. All in under six months.
Have fun, your gonna love it!

Not surprising considering that the OEM tires are the same ones used on the Prius. What is surprising is that they still managed to do a good job when reviewed. Really shows the handling capabilites of the FRS/BRZ.

according to this, all the FR-S needs is a stickier set of stock diameter tires and it'll beat a bone stock WRX and Mazdaspeed3 around the track:

For those who can't get video working or can't view them at work:
FRS Stock 1:29.3
WRX (sedan) Stock 1:28.3
MS3 (genpu) Stock 1:27.6
FRS Stock wheels, Dunlop Star Spec (215 diameter) 1:27.0
FRS 18" aftermarket wheels, Dunlop Star Spec (235 diameter) 1:27.6
(The larger diameter tires and larger aftermarket wheels actually hurt it by about 0.5s per lap.)
The BRZ and FRS remind me of my brother's 97 prelude - the prelude was FWD, 5 speed, was *heavier* by about 200lbs, lacks the same safety/security features, and has a spartan interior...but the concept behind both cars was the same. At $25,990 for the FRS, it's not that far off from the US pricing ($24,930), although you can't really say the same for the BRZ ($27,295 here, $25,495 in the US). Hell... the FRS is roughly $3500 cheaper than the base MS3 (CDN) and even though both cars really shouldn't be compared, they will most definitely be cross-shopped. In fact, it's priced the same as a 2012 Civic Si, and if you told me to choose between the two, the FRS wins every freakin' time....
EDIT: FRS pricing doesn't include freight/PDI. The CDN pricing is $27,485 vs the MS3's $29,940 (freight/PDI included), for a difference of $2455 between the two cars. The FRS US pricing of $24,930 INCLUDES freight/PDI. The BRZ US pricing of $25,495 does NOT include freight/pdi. Looks like I was wrong, the pricing is still out of whack with the US.

no doubt!
I think the intent was to show that the FR-S, being down about 100 hp to the WRX and MS3, and not using the stock no-season garbage tires, is faster than one would think. 0.6 seconds faster than the bone stock MS3, while it doesn't sound like much on paper, at the track that is huge.
I saw a great review on the Toyota GT-86 (which is basically the same car). Best RWD car for under 30K, but he complained there wasn't enough torque to have much fun with it. Good looking car though.

I got to sit in an FR-S today (didn't have the time to take it for a spin, although I will take up a standing offer next week). My first thought was "97 prelude", exactly as I had imagined it would feel like right down to the faux alcantara seats that caught and held onto dog hairs (among other things).
This is a somewhat small car, do not make the mistake of thinking it's the size of, say, a Genesis Coupe. I think it's smaller than a 370z, even. If you're way over 6ft, you won't fit in this thing comfortably. The upper limit is 6ft 3", which was the height of the salesguy who showed it to me - he just had to push the seat all the way to the back.
First impressions are very favourable. The seats are fantastic. Steering wheel is nicely sized (not too big) and has a slightly wider diameter than your average steering wheel. Gauges are easy to read (love the pattern on the background of the gauges), centre stack controls are simplistic (even a bit bland). Shifter is a nice short throw, about equal to my MS3's shifter with the JBR shift plate (40% reduction in throw length from OEM), but the shift action is smooth and crisp - I liked it very much. Pull on the ring to get the shifter into reverse. Headroom is about 3" above my head and I'm 6ft. Windows are frameless and the windows wind up and down a little bit when you open and close the door (slotting into grooves on the top of the door frame to help reduce wind noise. Back seat is deep, but leg room is practically non-existent. This is a 2 seater with room for two more oompa-loompa sized people. They look perfect for putting your groceries there, or your laptop bag or whatever. Trunk space is decent... maybe one medium-sized suitcase, if you're lucky. But really, you won't buy this car for cargo room...so it's kind of a moot point.
In short, if you've ever had a 97 - 2001 prelude and you miss getting rid of that thing - guess what, it's back. Except it's made by Toyobaru and it's RWD. And it's 200lbs lighter. And it gets better fuel economy. And it has better safety/security/features than your prelude could ever have dreamed of having.....

I imagine a number of people buying the FR-S or BRZ had owned a prelude before (or own a prelude now), which is basically the Honda version of your FR-S (except FWD, among other things). I had a 97 prelude years ago and I remember having a great deal of fun with it whether just cruising or driving around. When they stopped making them in 2001 I was starting to see the direction Honda was going - away from what made them so great and towards appliance-mobiles. Fast forward to 2010 and I'm looking at getting a car... ended up with the MS3 for obvious reasons, but if the FR-S/BRZ had been available at the time I would have seriously considered them.

Smart thinking with the no holes in the front bumper. I told the dealership the same thing and had them put in down on the contract that its a condition of sale, otherwise they need to replace with a new bumper. All I had to do was bring in the CPE tow plate when I picked up the car.

Bah, I should have done that with my car. Oh well, if I do go with a tow plate in the future, I guess I can get black or dark grey wood screws or whatever and fill the holes in. Say, jon, where did you get your dash cam from? How much are they, and do they record to a HDD or something?
Also just watched that review. LOL at the Genesis having the nicer interior, the 2012s and earlier are good, but the 2013s are a mess. I keep mentioning those fake interior gauges, so here they are:

Actually, the interior of the 2010 and 2011 had that silver centre console that I hated and hard plastics. This was fixed in the 2012 version with softer materials and gunmetal trim. The 2013 overall dash materials are of higher quality material but I agree, I do prefer the look of my model year.

Torque gauge for the 3.8, psi gauge for the 2.0T. The point of me posting the gauges in the 2013 Genesis Coupe was to show how utterly useless they are due to their position. All would be okay if they were up on the dashboard in the driver's line of sight as they look ahead....but they are not.

Yeah, I read about that one. 213 - 215 whp with 4 psi of boost (the high compression ratio of 12.5:1 doesn't take well to higher levels of boost). The car is brand new too, only about 1000 - 2000 miles on the odometer. I think that if they can get it to 240 - 250 whp, that would be the sweet spot.

sorry....
I just found it very interesting how he ranked the FRS behind the Genesis Coupe and Miata. And if you had enough time to go on the website to read everything he wrote about, it actually made a lot of sense (to me anyway). Maybe I'm just n00b or ignorant lol...it just seems like this thing's been over-hyped and it's just interesting to see TTAC critique it.
Anyway, I guess it's just a matter of opinion and I just thought it'd be interesting....

Stock wheels 17X7 +48 @ 20lbs is fair at best, the only thing holding back the FR-S/BR-Z are the Prius tires. Atleast for me i'm going to changed them next year with a new set of Wedsports TC105N 17X8 Fronts and 17X9 rears.

After living with it for 3 hours so far, I'll say it's far too low for me to get in and out of comfortably. Also, it's unacceptably tiny inside. Driving position and everything is far too Miata-like. I'm 6'0 and 160 lbs... so not a huge guy, but still.

That designated clock is standard-issue Toyota. It's not great to look at but it does the job really well. Plus, how many cars these days actually have a designated clock rather than some integrated garbage into a bunch of other systems?

Not many but I don't mind the integration really. I mean if you are replacing the deck your new deck probably has a clock? I just felt with the touch screen above it the clock looked really dated.

I think this works for both standard and upgraded head unit. All stock FR-S head units are set to Scion TC speaker outputs, which sounds like crap in our cars. You have to manually set the head unit to output FR-S, so that its configured to the 8 speakers we have.

God damn; no wonder it's a third-party doing it. I couldn't see any of those guys actually qualifying for Toyota's press fleet (except Shutter Lit). I also assume that after tons of bloggers have messed about with it, it's probably so f*cked that it doesn't even drive straight anymore. Hell, even some auto journos mess around with cars so hard that the occasional press fleet car is abused too.

To be honest I was quite surprised to have the opportunity myself and I only found out later who all else was involved. The car seemed fine when I had it but I would not want to own it after. Prior to getting the keys they told me that 3 had been written off and 5 needed new transmissions due to the program which is pretty crazy.

That's the case with dealers, some dealers have some for immediate sale because each dealers gets some to sell. The ones outside tha GTA can them to you faster and I actually know people who want to get out of leases and group buy arrangements because the wait is so long, you can get it from these people easily.

Anyone that can wait might want to hold off. Subaru gas announced they are working on a turbo for the BRZ. 280 hp and 250 lbs of torque. Still RWD so not sure if it will get the STI name

Funny, since at first they made such a fuss that it would not be turbo'd (even stating that it was engineered without regard for fitting a turbo such that it would be very hard to do so)....... looks like that was to avoid people holding out for the turbo version.

Is that turbo story substantiated? I've read quite a few rumour sites claiming the same. Supposedly, Subaru is putting in the twin-scroll turbo along with DI for use in the 2014 BRZ and a tweaked version for the Impreza.

This is about the only current production car that I have a serious boner for. Turbo would put me over the edge
Definitely excited to see a turbo put in this thing. I knew it was only a matter of time Subaru released something of the sort. Can't wait to see how it pans out; should be a beast nonetheless.

Something tells me that the next gen will have DI but not turbo, maybe kick up the output to 220... Otherwise it'd kind of cannibalize sales from the impreza no?

Maybe its me but unless the imprezza loses a coupe of doors and its awd capability, they aren't in the same category. But I do wonder how many they expect to sell since the BRZ is not a huge volume seller as it is

I don't think so. Rally heritage + 4 doors + useable cargo/passenger space make it a totally different car IMO

The current BRZ/FR-S has a DI motor but it has a port injection injector spraying into the intake, presumably to prevent the gunk on the valves from DI... and whatever other reason Toyota deemed necessary to warrant the "5 th port" injector.

Also being able to purchase a lip kit straight from the dealer and put it in with your payments, that is a nice option.

I drove a BRZ on Saturday. Loved it. The engine is a musical instrument. Coming from a Speed3 I would like more straight-line speed and power, but I can see how it may throw off the balance of the car. It's already very tail-happy.

I dont mind how far it sticks out, but it has to be lowered like the second version you posted.
I just cant stand the original wheels that it comes with!

Apparently with equally skilled drivers behind the wheel, an FR-S with upgraded tires could beat out a stock Speed3 despite the horsepower difference.
I'd have to see it to believe it.

Having driven both, I would say that is impossible. FR-S is about as fast as my '99 SiR.

in a straight line sure, around a track there's more than straight line speed. the ms3 doesn't make full power in first, or second gears and cuts power when the wheel is turned in any gear. This combined with the limitation of FWD and weight disadvantage between a small rwd coupe vs. a 5 passenger with trunk space hatch make for a closer lap time than you'd think.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r_IWa_qlt3g&feature=player_embedded
There's an old twisty road I used to take my ms3 around. I was shocked one day when I had a friend follow me in his 04 rx8 (stock) that he remained glued to my bumper on a road I knew better with a well modded ms3 (springs, sways, tires, Cobb stage 3). That experience never made sense too me until i drove that same road after getting my rx8 r3 this fall and on my first pass saw speeds on the speedo that I'd never hit before.
Not saying the frs is better than an ms3, after wheels and tires you're speed improvement options are almost done whereas the speed has lots of headroom. Just saying it's not out of the question for me that a stock frs with wheels is quicker around a track than a stock ms3

^ Depending on the track of course.

12-05-2012, 01:16 PM
Yeah if the track was such that you rarely get above 2nd gear then maybe. But then again my civic can do that too.
And cant really compare to your RX-8 as I'm pretty sure that would wipe a FR-S on any track.

So I found a couple of articles by Autoguide running the Civic Si, Civic Si HFP, BRZ and MS3 at Toronto Motorsports Park (pretty much the shortest track you can find).
http://www.autoguide.com/manufacturer/mazda/2012-honda-civic-si-vs-2012-mazdaspeed3-video-1609.html
http://www.autoguide.com/car-comparisons/2013-subaru-brz-vs-2012-honda-civic-si-hfp-2165.html
Here's a summary of the lap times:
MS3: 1:26.4
Civic Si HFP: 1:26.4
BRZ: 1:26.6
Civic Si: 1:28.5
So based on the above, it's feasible that a BRZ can match/beat a MS3 with new tires. However, again, this is on a very tight track with minimal straights.

Give them all the same R comp tires and we'll see how big the speed3 margin gets.
I sure would NOT wanna be in a stock frs going up the back straight at mosport. That would suck.

Doug Murtha, Scion Vice President
Good morning and thank you all for joining us here in New York.
As many of you know, for as long as Scion has been around, the New York Auto Show has been an important venue for us. It was here in 2002 that Toyota unveiled the first concept vehicle destined for Scion – the bbX – while at the same time announcing the birth of the Scion brand. New York was also the site for reveals of influential concepts like the t2B, Fuse, and FR-S, as well as production versions of tC and iQ.
With the importance of the New York show to Scion, I really can’t think of a better place to be celebrating the 10th anniversary of our brand.
Scion’s mission from the beginning has been to attract new, younger buyers to Toyota through distinctively designed vehicles and a unique purchase and ownership experience. Ten years in, we have definitely delivered on that mission.
Since the introduction of Scion, 75% of our owners are new to the Toyota family. Over the course of our history, Scion’s median driver age has averaged 11 years younger than the industry average. Even the drivers of FR-S – priced in the mid-$20's – have held steady at only 31 years of age.
Thanks to our unique purchase process and groundbreaking engagement marketing efforts at both local and national levels, we continue to enjoy one of the most active relationships with our owner body of any make in the business. And true to our internal goal of experimentation, Scion has remained a laboratory for new methods in the vehicle purchase process, distribution, and communications; from early entry into digital publishing to more recent initiatives like our Motivate new business mentoring program.
Now we recognize we’re still a relative newcomer to the automotive market, and we haven’t lost focus on the future, but we do believe we have a lot to celebrate from our first 10 years in business, and that’s exactly what we intend to do.
With commemoration in mind, Scion is introducing a limited edition version of every vehicle in our lineup. We’re calling them the Scion 10 Series, and I think you’re going to like what you see. Let’s have a look.
All Scion 10 Series models will be painted in this exclusive premium color we call Silver Ignition. Each of the models will feature an LED Scion locator badge that lights up when you unlock your car, silver seat belts, a solar-powered illuminated shift ****, sequentially numbered interior badge, and my personal favorite: this cool new Scion 10 Series logo on the dash.
When you first enter the car, the Scion name illuminates before fading to reveal the number 10. xB, iQ, and xD also feature unique alloy wheels in a graphite finish, while FR-S adds HID headlamps with integrated LED daytime running lights, dual automatic climate control, and a smart key with push-button-start ignition. We plan to build about 10,000 units in total and they’ll be available in dealerships starting this June.
So by now, you might have noticed something missing. And not just any something – our volume leader: tC. Not only is tC Scion’s most popular car, it has the youngest median age drivers in the industry at just 28 years old. That’s why we put a little something extra into it.
Saving the best for last, allow me to introduce the NEW 2014 Scion tC.
The new front face features angular headlamps with a much more aggressive look. The all-new hood extends lower toward a more muscular bumper and emphasizes totally new upper and lower grille treatments, as well as new LED accent lighting.
On the side, tC will sport a new, standard 18-inch alloy wheel that carries the aggressive character and look of the face to the profile of the car. The new wheels feature a premium dark gray paint, contrasted by eye-catching machined-spoke surfaces.
Continuing the theme to the rear, a more distinctive and aggressive bumper features an expanded black-out section and FR-S style lower center accent trim, complemented by the new, more advanced look of the LED tail lamps.
The new tC boasts two new paint colors: Absolutely Red and Blue Streak Metallic, along with a host of interior enhancements like upgraded materials, brighter accents, auto-off headlamps, and auto-up and down driver's window.
The new tC will be the first in the Scion family to feature an all-new Standard Display Audio system featuring a 6.1 inch LCD touchscreen. The new system comes with features that Scion drivers expect like Bluetooth®, HD RadioTM Technology, USB connectivity, and steering-wheel audio controls. This system will also be featured on each of the Scion 10 Series models.
Once it makes its way to the rest of the lineup later this year, Scion will be the first non-luxury brand to feature a touchscreen display audio system as standard equipment across its entire lineup.
The base audio system will be joined by an all-new optional BeSpoke Premium Audio system featuring AhaTM. When connected to a compatible smart phone through Aha, users can access 30,000 free audio stations, including Scion’s own signature station featuring 17 of our own music channels. In addition to audiobook stations, sports, news, and entertainment, Aha utilizes location–based services like Yelp and TripAdvisor, along with popular social media applications. The BeSpoke premium system also includes full navigation all at a great value for consumers.
Moving back behind the wheel, drivers will experience an FR-S inspired 6-speed automatic transmission with up and downshifts nearly twice as fast as today. tC will also add Dynamic Rev Management technology that matches engine revs with gear ratios to limit driveline shock. To further elevate the fun factor, we’ve increased body rigidity through additional spot welds, retuned electronic power steering, optimized shock damping, and modified hardware for the stabilizer bars and suspension.
All together these changes combine to deliver more fun and engagement that you’ll have to drive to experience.
The new tC will begin arriving at dealerships around June of this year.
As you can see there is a lot to look forward to from Scion this year, from the five Scion 10 Series models, to the new 2014 tC, all with a host of changes and new content that are sure to be a hit with Scion’s creative set of new car buyers.
I want to thank you again for spending time with us today. Photographers are welcome to come up to take the first pictures of all the models we have on display.
Thanks again.

My gf was going to buy one but after sitting inside, it's just so ghetto... despite how amazing it looks on the outside. Good car for the track (as can be clearly seen from all the videos), not a good car for a DD.... unless you like people laughing at the cheap interior when they get in your car. Also, its something if you can wow the driver with insane power, but it doesn't deliver there either.
Hope they vastly improve the interior in the next gen... although that would suck for people that already bought one, could really destroy the retail value.
Oh, and does anyone have any winter DD experience on these? How do they handle, and what happens to the doors when the windows freeze up in the winter? can you still get in your car?

You kidding? People have been driving cars with pillarless windows for years. Most Subarus up until recently had pillarless windows.

I wouldn't call it ghetto, personally I find it more practical. It doesn't have a million buttons and there's no fancy things to toy around with. It has what's 'necessary' and that's it. If anything that was sort of a bonus when I bought mine but hey we all have our preferences.
Also to your DD comment its an amazing car to DD through summer and winter (actually saw a few guys on FT86Club mention they prefer driving it in winter). But your right it doesn't have a lot of power but that's really not what the car was built for, It's a drivers car and not a look how fast I can go.
And to answer the window freezing, It does happen occasionally but its just a quick reset (holding down on the window key to reset it and have it work perfectly.

Thanks for the good response.
In defense of my 'ghetto' comment, its not just about the controls. I mean the whole dash looks ridiculously cheap... like it looks like they used the cheap carbon fiber wrap (non 3d) that you can buy on ebay for a few cents on a piece of plastic. Obvious cost cutting. The BRZ is a bit better, but still nowhere near mazda, hyundai, etc.

Spotted the guy from here with the "FT86" plate on the FR-S. I don't know if you noticed me; I was going down the 404 this evening right before sunset in the bright orange 2014 Civic Si Coupe. Your car looked awesome...

Subaru BRZ S announced for Australia. Looks like it will have STi rims, skirt, front & rear lip, spoiler and possibly upgrades to the suspension, exhaust and intake.

Yeah, this doesn't do much for me either. The side skirts look out of place and the spoiler is just weird. I do like the rims though but your 5Axis kit nice!

As one of the first owners of the Fr-S on this forum since last year July. I wanted to say the cars interior for what the car cost is pretty acceptable IMO. For you to say the BR-Z looks better, yes it does, thats because Subaru is smart enough to bring spec for spec the same gear japan has to Canada. Scion which are morons wanted it to be "affordable" so they did not bring spec for spec what Japan FR-S Aka 86 to Canada. In japan 86 and Br-z have the exact same interiors. minus the small stuff to differentiate them. Just to clarify some things there lol.
As a Daily driver car, the car does well getting you to point A to point B, it survived the big snow storm that we had this year and being a RWD it did pretty well, with the right snow tires. I had Hankook ipikes. Obviously with more than the foot of snow the car will struggle, like most car would. As for power, 200HP is more than enough to have fun on the highway and on local street driving. Its usable HP that's important and you can use most of the 200HP easy on streets and highway. The only downside to this car is the Trunk space, it would hold 4 tires thats about it. anything bigger the trunk does not have enough space height wise. Overall the car is dream to drive regardless of its minor flaws.
Any more questions about the car go ahead and ask. Btw mine is a 6spd the only transmission to get for this car. Auto=fail.

Is the FR-S / BRZ a fun DD? I've been thinking on and off it I should trade the Si for one of these....

I haven't driven a Civic Si but I'd have to believe a BRZ/FRS would be a huge upgrade in terms of fun.

Front Engine Rear drive always way more fun than front engine and Front drive, and as a DD this car trumps any car in its price range and class. i can rev line the car in all gears just to merge onto highway and it puts a smile on my face hearing the 2litre boxer roar. You get a stamp of approval from me as a owner to close to a year now. Get one.

When did you get the car Tozer, are you on the FT86club club site? I hope you did the car justice and put it on the track. Little rant here, hate seeing these cars on the road knowing people just bought it because its a successor to the 86 or just the hype, and never do the car justice. True car enthusiast would know this car, who watch this car be born from 4 years of development would know to buy it and track it to do the car justice. Being a 2month wait for this car, and seeing the car driven by old farts just irritates me they are wasting a good car. Now tozer nothing against you, as your part of a car club and know the pain on a car being wasted. ok rant over lol.
Btw what kit you have on the car? 5axis?

Just entering my 3rd week with it and yes I am on Ft86! Unfortunately the car will not be on the track this year, hopefully next year though. But your rant is hilarious lol but it's true. Eventually way way down the road when I can afford it it'll be a strictly track car but as of now it's just my putt putt mobile that once in a while will see the track. My dad works for Toyota so this car has been the talk of my household for a long time coming and to say the least my dad envies me that I bought this car
But you'll probably have a comment just like most people do, but I went auto.
And yes I have the five axis kit 5pce with enkei raijin staggered wheels and just ordered the 3'' Perrin Catback w/ 4" slashed tips

My Si puts a smile on my face for the same reasons lol. I just don't know how much of an upgrade it really is. In terms of power, the 2 are pretty much on par.
The biggest difference is the RWD, but is that really enough of an upgrade for me to make the switch?
I track, but only 3 - 4 times a year at most.

RWD layout alone isn't the only noticeable difference that sets these two cars apart. I wouldn't even hold the Si as a competitor nor comparable to the BRZ/FRS. Only other competitor out there is the Genesis 2T coupe, I feel.

The big enough upgrade will really be up to you. Honestly i can only tell you how i feel about the car, and telling you isnt the same as feeling it. Hence my only suggestion is to drive one. Markville toyota has a asphalt auto, DVNT has a Black auto, hot lava 6spd. Go test drive one and don't be afraid to beat the crap out of them.
