So I received a parking ticket at 2:10am just as I was walking to my car. This was at a friend's apartment in Toronto back in September. It was issued by some private security company, but it wasn't one of those scam ones that tell you to go pay some company in Brampton. It was a legit looking ticket, it was yellow, the correct size, had all the appropriate City of Toronto logo's and wording, the only difference was that it was on paper, and not that plastic crap the parking cops give you. Originally I thought maybe it was fake because I tore it slightly to see if it was made of the plastic stuff, and it tore.
Short story long, I forgot about it, received a notice in the mail a month later and went in to file my intention to fight it. The lady at the office gave me one of those yellow carbon copy receipts and that was that. I haven't heard anything from the city since then.
So I'm wondering if it's just been dropped or what? Do they normally mail you something to tell you it's been dropped? Or do you have to call in? Main problem is that I was not driving my car so the ticket is in someone else's name. But obviously since I was driving I have to deal with it.
I'll probably call later today, but I'm just curious, do they normally mail you something to tell you it's been dropped?

The last parking ticket I got took 8 months to get the court date

From what I understand is that they are suppose to mail you something if it's been dropped. I had a similar situation, although it's not a parking ticket.. My speeding ticket got dropped (according to xpolice) and they said that the city/somebody will send a letter of some sort stating that it's been dropped. I figure, it should be the same for other tickets.
I also have a parking ticket that I wanted to fight. Sent the request to the city and whatnot, but still hadn't gotten a confirmation or a court date (this happened late last year I believe, October or November). Also, I was thinking that there might be a chance that they just lost the request or the parking enforcer did not file it because it's been too long and I haven't received any letter.

I've filed at least 6 court dates, all for parking tickets, and each time I have received a notice in the mail saying the charge has been dropped. It does take a while though... long enough for you to forget sometimes
Yes, like everyone has mentioned, not receiving anything (good or bad news) for upwards to a year even isn't surprising.
I currently probably have about 5 parking tix issued by Toronto still awaiting a court date. Just to give an example, a parking tag I received in Nov 2010 resulted in a court date this past Feb 2012. AND, I'm thinking that only happened because in like Oct 2011, I received two more parking tags in the same week, both of which I requested court dates for. Thinking that because of those two in Oct 2011, it probably bumped that Nov '10 ticket up on some sort of priority list (bringing the backlog on that 'car/plate' up to like 6) and thus got a confirmed court date. Otherwise, everything else is still in limbo.
On the other hand, I've also received a parking ticket in Vaughan, and that was instantaneous. I took it looking for a court date, but instead when I got there, they told me to take a seat, and some sort of mediator (informal setting) sat down with me and discussed my plea (I got it reduced), same day. The whole ordeal took less than an hour.
The only difference that I can think of is that all my Toronto ones were minor (all for $30) whereas the Vaughan one was for $300. They (Toronto) are probably prioritizing all the court slots for the major ones first.
Again, just my personal experience, and opinion.

What on earth could you say to fight a parking ticket? They only give you a ticket if you are in violation which they have proof of with your ticket or lack of.

The fine goes to the registered owner of the car. But if the owner lent the car to n00b, why should the registered owner pay the ticket of he/she wasn't the one that parked illegally in the first place?
- Members of a congregation attending worship can get a ticket cancelled by getting a letter from a clergy person.
- Under a courtesy exemption, drivers who can convince staff they were tagged because of medical reasons, age, unusual circumstances, or ignorance of the bylaw — particularly those who live more than 100 kilometres out of the city — might get off.
- Those parking on streets where authorized parking alternates from side to side can argue they were confused about the schedule. A grace period for “change-over dates” is allowed.
- Security companies, utility vehicles, taxis and limos, delivery trucks and fast food delivery drivers can all appeal to have tickets cancelled if they can prove they were on business at the time of the tag.
If you’re ticketed more than once in 3 - hours for the same reason — such as an unpaid meter — you can ask to have subsequent tickets cancelled if you pay the first

That's the whole point. Why would the government waste so much money for a court time slot just to hear a 30$ parking ticket violation? :chuckle Works everytime brah

I guess you don't have these rules in Alberta. Toronto and the GTA have an overnight parking rule which states something along the lines of "No parking on street between 2am-6am or otherwise posted" or "overnight parking with permit only".
Anyway. I received a parking ticket from Impark a few years ago and decided to ignore it since it was a private company. Long story short, collections got involved and the car was under my dad's name (he was not a happy camper) so I had to pay it up.
Also, I had a parking ticket for parking on Adelaide overnight (I got towed as well). Ticket was $60, went to court, pleaded guilty but had stated I was from out of town, and the Judge reduced it to $20.

So many parking tickets go to court that it begins to cost the gov'd money. Parking tickets are just money-grabs.. If you take it to court, that 50$ the city could make that day turns into thousands of $$ in court. Often if minor tickets cannot be squeezed into a time slot within a reasonable time (1 year), they just get "cancelled". Priority tickets are the nice expensive ones like illegal handicap parking or fire route parking

By that logic why bother fighting speeding tickets, red light tickets, moving violations, etc etc.
The point is, I was parked in the visitor parking at my friends apartment, and while the signage states you cannot park there past 2am without a permit, I was on my way to my car and it was barely after 2am. The ticket says something like 2:07am for time of infraction. Seriously? That's ****ing bullshit. If it was 2:30 am, then that's understandable, but a few minutes past 2am is absolutely ridiculous.

Yeah, our parking by-laws are stupid as f*k

We do have those.. in the downtown areas. They are supposed to tow vehicles M W and F if they are parked over night. I've parked there for a week straight with no issues. I think it's just for vehicles that have been abandoned.. Pretty stupid law regardless.
I've gotten a ticket with impark.. they can't make you pay. You just can't ever park in the lot again or they will tow you.
Also if you are in visitor parking on a private lot I thought it wasn't part of the city infractions??

It's not just the GTA that has awful parking bylaws. If I park on the street between 2am and 5am in Wellesley, ON (town of >2,000), I'm breaking the law and get a ticket. There's no traffic, no good reason other than that the Township could use an extra $25 here and there. There's no posted signs, just one of those things you're supposed to know.

+1, I also issue parking tickets where I work as well, There are a few of my co-workers that have "MLEO" status meaning they can issue municipal tickets on private property.

They BURN OUR money, why do you think the taxes go up.
While people may get themselves out a $30 parking ticket, the government will get their money back, look at the license fee that Rob Ford through out and is now looking at putting back in.
For people that don't like rules about overnight parking.
Would you like the snow plow to just push your car out of the way?
What about in spring when the street cleaners are out, want them to throw rocks and debris all along the side of your freshly detailed car?
Signs are put up on purpose and are usually quite visible. I have gotten 3 parking tickets in my life (driving 11years now)
1.School parking lot at college because I forgot to display my pass - my fault I paid it without thinking twice about it.
2.Parked beside my old townhouse for 3 hours because there was no visitors and I told my company to park in my spot. - I was new to the area and did not know it was no parking, although there are tonnes of signs along the street.
3.Parking ticket at work for not having my pass displayed...that was hanging from my mirror less then a foot away from where the city put the ticket - I was told they take a picture if they give you a parking ticket so I had no problems fighting this one, it was dropped right away.
To add;
In St Catharines they refuse to trim the tree branches. About 7 or 8 years ago I was moving someone in with my dad and it was a downpour of rain, well the tree branches get heavy and hang low. When trying to get a tractor trailer out of an area where they don't trim the tree's normally is a problem, with them 3 feet lower its a pain. We took tree branches down the whole way out of the sub-division and I know for a fact that some were falling on cars, however! it is not the drivers fault there was not 14feet of clearance for a truck to get through, and not his problem cars were parked where they should not have been..
So next time you park on the street, check the tree branches above you, and say to yourself, if tractor trailer drives by here will I have my windshield still...

Slade, I understand that, but this was at a private apartment building, IN their private parking lot. If I was parked on the street, then yeah, I wouldn't waste my time fighting it (and I have received a parking ticket for parking on the street and paid it full (was totally worth it too ;) lol)). But it was basically 5 minutes after 2am and I was walking to my car as they were writing it, they could have friggin stopped when they heard me and not been ****ing dicks about it.
