Hi guys,
I have a 2011 Mazda3 GS that we bought new last year. Basically the problem that I am facing is when filling up gas, the click goes off between the 35L-41L mark. This has happened at multiple gas pumps and I follow the procedure where I put the nozzle in all the way, then back up an inch or so. My gas tank is around 60L and it takes forever to fill it up properly.
I have taken the car to the dealership that I bought it from, and they say that this is normal and that there is nothing wrong with the fuel system in the car. Most cars that I know cut off around 5L before their full tank mark, but this Mazda is cutting off a good 1/3 beforehand.
Has anyone else experienced this problem and know of any fixes? If you have a Mazda3, when does your gas click off?
Thanks

What does the fuel meter display before and after fuel-up?
My 09 GS does the same. The last fill up, it clicked around 42L and my fuel gauge says Full and the remaining KM's was 620KM. Just before fueling it had about 100KM remaining which is about 10L. So the tank has about 52L after the fuel up which is close to full at 55L.

@Akiba48 - I dont have a trip computer (only the GT has that, I have the GS). Irregardless of whether I fill it up all the way to 58-60L or stop filling once it clicks off, the fuel meter display will be all full bars (fuel gauge has 12 bars, 3 bars per quarter). If I had it filled up all the way to 60, usually the first bar wont go off until 150-200km. If I only fill it up till it clicks off, first bar falls off around 40-60km.
@tpmz - well in your case your tank actually is almost full since 10+42=52L on a 55L tank. For me, I will fill it upto 38L, it will click off, then I have to slow keep putting it in for 20min until it reaches ~58L.
Funny thing is officially the mazda3 gs should have a 55L tank but I can pump upto 58L when the low fuel light comes on (im assuming ~20km/2L left?), which leads me to guess that there is a 5L reserve tank or whatever.

I have a 2010 and mine is the same, if I want to screw around I can generally squeeze almost 8 litres after the first click off. I admit it is a PITA. It been like this since new and the dealer says this is normal.

Dont put the nozzle in the tank ALL the way and only hold the trigger 3/4 of the way down instead of full.

i put mine all the way in (sounds dirty lol) and when it clicks, i take it out and gas gauge is full, km left to empty says 740-760 km.....
Hop right on the highway and watch it climb to 780-790 after a 20 minute commute on the highway lol.
I experienced this with my Acura CSX where the pump shut off too early and left me with 3/4 tank instead of full. It was an issue with the pump and not the car.
i noticed this with some petros and my dads truck. it will click right at beginning if i put it in all the way :No Homo Smiley. so i just leave it half way out to avoid the early click. it still clicks at 70L (which is full tank).

I always slow down the pumping rate once I get to the 30L mark and also pull out the pump nozzle a bit. Seems to work well. Uggh, is it possible to reply to this thread without sounding bad!? :chuckle

Hi rinobo,
Your car is normal. The fuel empty light will come on when you still have 10-15 liter in the tank. To fill it up, you only need 40-45L. Stop putting in too much fuel. If you fill it up every time to the neck of the opening, you will end up damage you car. There is a vapor collection system in your tank design. Over-filling could damage that system and it is an expansive repair. When that part is damaged, you will start smelling gas when idling. Engine light may or may not come on. So, stop filling in at first click.

Yeah this is normal. On my 2012 GS-Sky the fuel gauge says empty when there's still 11L left in the tank....

Don't drive so hard.
I've gotten 720ish out of an 07 2.0.

Because skyactiv!
But seriously, take it easy. Winter weather usually takes a toll on gas mileage. Try setting your cruise control to 100 on highways

Same with me. Given up trying to solve it

i remember once when i filled up at a gas station in Waterloo... i think at the corner of King and University? ... the click-off thing on the fuel pump wasn't working... so it filled up my gas tank until overflowing and gas started to spill onto the ground!

My mom has a 2011 Mazda3 GX and regardless of what pump she uses, if she lets it go to the first click, it overfills the tank and gas comes spewing out of the opening...
She took it in and they said it was the pump. That doesn't sound right because this has happened on various pumps.
Anybody else have this happen?
I checked this again today for the hell of it, after the pump clicked off I was able to pump another 15 bucks worth. Granted the SOB kept clicking off but the moral is 15 bucks more after the first click off.At a dollar twenty a liter that was 12.5 liters of gas.

I have a 2011 Mazda3 GS and my first click at the pump is at about 45-50L ish depending if I let it get to the point when the gas light goes on. Which I try very hard not to let that happen.
But never had this problem you guys are talking about!!

The filler neck breather is plugged, this is common. On the 2010+ they will actually replace the fuel tank, that includes Skyactiv.
