View Full Version : 407 Transponder

Good evening fine people of TM3,
I take my car to work, which sees me using the 407 for very short intervals (read: 404 to yonge going to work, and Bayview to 404 coming home). I have had my transponder switched over to my new information and was offered to be mailed those velcro strips for free from 407ETR. I declined because I didn't like it sitting on the windshield in my last car, and I sure as hell don't want to stick it up by the mirror in my new car. It is bulky, ugly and big.
Obviously it's required to use so I can save a bit of money using the 407. For the time being it's sitting in the center console, I take it out before going under the sensors and that works okay. But I figured I'd drop by here and see if anyone else has this dilemma here.
What is a creative place to mount the transponder so that it will still register the sensors but isn't a visual burden? Where did you stick yours? Lastly does anyone know anything about if it might still work say, in the glove compartment, etc (I assume not, but just curious if anyone knows more about the sensor power)?
Thanks!
Jackal

I put mine right behind the mirror where I can't see it from the driver's seat. Don't think it will work everytime if you keep it in the glove compartment.

It doesn't, I just take it out when exiting.

Only when exiting? Doesn't it scan when entering, then when exiting to calculate your usage? I have no idea how their system works.
My issue with just taking it out every time is that I know I will forget a few times and it will end up costing me an arm and a leg. Which, of course, is on me, but I guess I'm stuck with sticking it behind the rear view mirror.
Sucks though it has to be on the drivers side, because the sensor for the automatic windshield wipers is on the passenger side.
First world problems, lol.

+1 on the right side. Can't see it at all.

i remember my dad used to hold it up to the camera when entering /exiting....then one day he dropped it as it was going under the camera..... he has then resorted to stick it to the windshield.... which is where it is now in my mazda..... its fairly hidden behind the mirror so its hard to notice unless you look at that spot specifically.....

The transponder is a rental, isn't it? Don't I have to give it back when I'm done? Will they bill me for givin' it a plasti-dip treatment?

does it still work if you stuffed it under the centre air vents trim on the genwons?

I somehow doubt it. And I'm not even willing to take the chance by testing it out. It's such a gouge when you don't have a transponder.

I thought that if you have a transponder linked to a plate you wouldn't get the video charges if the transponder didn't register.

mine is in the glovebox and works most of the time. If it doesn't...I don't really care, I had the 407 register my plates to my transponder.

It works very well there. There is nice big space right behind the air vents. I used to have mine there before I installed my GPS (I've got a COOLNavi 700 in the JDM enclosure there now.)
My transponder is now Velcoed to the inside of the armrest lid. Works well.... I've only seen a couple of misses where the record was video not transponder, and I use the 407 a lot - about 10 times a week. Note that I do have a sunroof, which means the signal has a clear path for being picked up the the readers when I pass under them. I used a 2"x3" wide strip of black industrial-strength Velco to attach it.... the plasticy things 407ETR sends wouldn't stay stuck to the armrest plastic.
I somehow doubt it. And I'm not even willing to take the chance by testing it out. It's such a gouge when you don't have a transponder.
They charge you $3 if you don't have transponder.....

Yeah, but that's every trip. Each trip testing new locations and having it not sense it properly will add up fast
I thought that if you have a transponder linked to a plate you wouldn't get the video charges if the transponder didn't register.
I'm pretty sure the transponder needs to scan on entry and "beep" when exiting, otherwise they're probably too lazy to check whether you have a transponder or not and just charge you the video toll charge.

So if it doesn't scan and they have to check the video and look up your plate, they see you have a transponder and don't charge you the fee? So you could just leave it at home essentially?

I like the idea of putting it in the door pocket. I haven't had a car with a door pocket that I have ever used so I didn't even think about it. +1

If you don't mind the eyesore, stick it to the sun-visor and pop it down when entering/exiting. Works...usually.
Also, sometimes when you exit, it may not beep, but it does work. Called 407 to complain about that and they indicated that sometimes the older ones do not always beep.

I do mind the eye sore though. That's why I was asking for recommendations. I had to order a whole new transponder, because my current one is in my girlfriends name (she owned the car I used to drive), my new car is in my name and for some stupid reason they are completely unable to change the name on accounts.
Bleh. I'll just get it rigged up on the passenger side behind the rear view mirror as best I can without it being visable to me while driving.
Thanks guys

Put it by the lower passenger side windshield in the very corner. Doesn't bother me one bit and I don't miss a beep.
How about I mount it on my windscreen that way you don't have to look at it

I did the same setup and removed the 407 sticker on the transponder making it less visible from in/outside the vehicle.

Same issue here.... not sticking this thing to my window....
I just toss it up on the dash when I need to use it and store in the centre console when finished.
It's a low powered device so I would expect that it needs to be in clear line of sight to the the over head transponders.
Would be great if it worked in the glove box but I doubt it.

Yeah I noticed that to the left of the steering wheel just above the trunk lever is a compartment that the transponder can sit in. I've had it there all day and it doesn't fall out and it doesn't vibrate with loud music (like my sunglasses in the sunglasses compartment >.<) or anything. I think that's a holder reserved ideally for a garage door opener maybe, but it works for this for me because I don't park in my garage.
So, until I figure out a better situation, or maybe tack it up to the windshield this is where it's going to sit.

Yesterday I forgot to grab my transponder out of the compartment to the left of the steering wheel that I store it in. I didn't realize I hadn't taken it out until I heard it beep. Turns out you can leave it there and it still senses properly. Enough to beep anyways, I'm waiting to get my bill on that day and see.
Balls.... I just put mine on the inside of my windshield right below my rain sensor... who gives a shit, you dont even notice its there.

Yeah, I just got my new velcro in the mail yesterday. I was going to mount it there behind the mirror so I wouldn't see it in the drivers seat. But now if I don't have to mount it at all, that's much more preferable to me putting that shit on the windshield.
I can only imagine how much of a bitch it is to get those clean. I just left them on in my old car when I gave it away :p Let my girlfriend's sister's boyfriend worry about it if he wants to :D
I am not sure what model you guys all have but in the first gen styling you could pop off the centre panel that is for the vents and there is a ton of storage in there. In my 04 I used some velcro to hold it in place in there and worked everytime. Currently it is sitting in that little pocket on the left of the drivers side below the blank slots. I just place it on one of those anti-slip pads, that I cut down to a convenient size, on the dash.
Even if you have the plates registered they still mess up VERY often. I know my sister had this issue and was calling them practically every month. They use the 407 for business and have multiple cars on the account.

Yeah. I was using the 407 for work on Friday of last week and it was in the pocket on the left of the steering wheel and it didn't beep. So that pocket turns out is really hit and miss.
I was thinking of grabbing a piece of no slip material and just setting it on my dash. I thought of that yesterday when I took a turn and it slid all the way along the dash. I just cringed and I imagined it scraping the hell out of my dash. No damage, but it's already time for a permanant solution. I got a new set of the fasteners from the 407 in the mail the other day. It's between the no stick material and just saying **** it and putting it on my windshield, hiding it behind the rearview mirror as best I can. I'm just bothered by the eventuality of when the time comes for me to sell the car, I'm going to want to get rid of it from the windshield. Really don't want to piss about with getting the windshield clean of all the gunk the fasteners leave behind.
First world problems, huh. lol.

I used to work there, so i know how it works. For those that keep it in your glovebox and pull it out as you get on and off; luckily as long as you have it out for at least one end of your trip (exit or entrance) then it'll pair to your plate assuming your plate is registered to that transponder. So don't worry if you forgot to pull it out when you got on or got off, you just need one.
However, if you are one of those people that pass transponders between multiple cars, you'll have 2 half trips and it'll cost more. I recommend getting a second transponder, its $0.83/month for a second transponder ($10/year) its worth the headache of remembering which car you left it in especially when in a rush. You could probably contest the 2 halfs and get it consolidated to one trip, but then they'll know you're moving around cars and if you catch a break they'll likely make a note of it and you won't get away with it next time, because you should have had a seperate transponder.
If you forgot it in your glove box going in and going out and it didn't register, I believe you will still be charged the video trip charge of $3 regardless of whether its tied to your plate, because the cameras had to resort to taking a picture and that costs money and isn`t as straight forward as it sounds of just "car coming.. *click*" you can probably protest it a couple times and get it reversed but they'll make notes and you'll only get away from it for so long. Those could have changed since i left though.
All in all just do what everyone else said it put it behind your mirror. I never see it in my gen 1 or gen 2.
for those worried about residue and removing it from their car, go to canadian tire and get a box of uGlu strips
http://www.canadiantire.ca/AST/browse/6/Tools/HomeRepairMaintenance/TapeGlueSealants/PRD~0671410P/Uglu+Adhesive+Strip.jsp?locale=en
i got a different box with little squares and assorted sizes. This stuff is super strong and easy to remove with no residue or issues. I used a couple squares to hang a mirror on my wall and when i pulled it off, it didn't peel the paint or leave any marks. I currently have it holding on my rear emblems, my front driver wheel centrecap (they clips snapped) and my 2.3's on the side because i removed them to plastidip. They're holding on great even in the cold.
or if you really dont' want to put in on the windscreen, those sticky pads are like magic. i keep one on the door covering my cup holders and i can open the lid with my phone attached and it'll still stick. the phones thin enough to clear the gap. put one of those on the front of your dash
