I sincerely apologise if this topic has been covered previously guys & I'm new to this Forum with this being my first Post !! I'm the owner of a 2010 Mazda 6 iTouring Plus / 2.5L with a newly purchased used 2010 Mazda 3 GT /2.5L after my kid just wrote off my 2001 Protégé ! I'm a Mazda Fan !! What can I say ? My 2010 M6 has been switched over to 0W20 Synthetic without issue... SOO the Question: The M3 vehicle has 91,000 KM's on it and the original only owner had the vehicle serviced throughout it's life at Gyro Mazda in Toronto since new with 5W-20 Conventional oil !! Can I switch this M3 to 0W-20 Synthetic OR have I answered my own question ? Also, anyone using K&N HP-1002 Oil Filters ? Any feedback is greatly appreciated ! Glad to be on board !! Cheers !

It shouldn't be a problem to switch, I bought a 2010 Speed3 last year at 112k and I immediately put 5W 30 synthetic in it and have been ever since and I haven't seen any I'll effects.

Hey Thanks for the quick reply ! I was told by an Auto Tech. that when comparing 5W-20 to 0W-20 oil, there was little to-no difference, except in extreme cold weather start up conditions, in which 0W-20 was more fluid and better for the engine ! So I went against the 5W-20 Mazda recommendation on the oil cap !! Accordingly, I have a ton of Mobil 1 0W-20 that I purchased at a great price with a bunch of K&N oil filters ! Anyone using 0W-20 in their 2010 M3 ? Thanx !!

Use it if you've got it, but after 100,000kms you can use 5w30 with no issue.

Why would I switch oil again from 0W-20 to 5W-30 ? I'm reading guys with 250,000KMs on 0W-20 from new ? I'm not getting it ?

Just switched to full synthetic today for the first time on my 2010 GT. So far the car is running fine and it hasn't blown the engine.

I have a 2011 Mazda 3 that the oil cap calls for 0w-20, but I had a 2012 GT 2.5 that had 23804k on the engine running 0w-20 that the third cylinder popped on me. (The cap called for 0w-20)
So I guess user beware. I am running 0w-20 in the regular 3 2.0, and 5w-30 semi-synthetic in my speed.

Hi Reddie;
Was it confirmed that the damage was oil related ? I hope it was covered under warranty !

Car didn't have warranty after an accident, so I had to swap the engine. I don't know if it was the oil or what, but it spun a bearing, so I assume it didn't have enough oil getting to it. But the 2.3 and 2.5 have a history of the third cylinder dying.

Been reading a lot of threads in various Mazda Forums and it seems a lot of people do use the heavier 5W-30 synthetic in their Mazda cars !! Don't really know why BUT if it works for you and your cars engine, along with the owner are happy with that grade of oil, that's all that really matters !!

The Mazda 3 caps have 5w-20 on them, at least 2006 to 2011. The Speed is 5w-30.(all years pretty sure) The Skyactiv engine, and 2011 and newer cars have 0w-20 on the cap.

My 05 GS used 5W 30, I guess they changed it in following years. Also the GS used the 2.3 L engine which I guess is a detuned engine from the speed so that maybe why

Since we're on the topic of oil, does anyone run 0W-30 in their Skyactiv? There's the whole debate about 30 weight oil offering better protection at operating temp, but I'm not really sure I buy into it being worlds better than 0w20... Thoughts?

Just use OEM spec. People much smarter than me designed the engine to use 0W 20 so that is what I would use IMO

Mazda OEM oil specs changes more then my wife's attitude on menopause !! In 2010, Mazda states that 5W-20 conventional to be used with 5w-30 as a suitable substitute in Mexico .... In 2011, same exact motor was speced for 0W-20 (Synthetic) or 5W-20 as a suitable substitute in Mexico !! These 2010/2011 years are NOT SkyActiv engines BUT what I take away from this is all these grades of oil are acceptable to run in the model years engines !!

The reason that 5-30 is fine in Mexico is because the car is supposed to be in a much warmer climate.

use a full synthetic if your worried about the kind of oil to be used. better protection against sheering / breakdown of the oil grade and better for colder starts

I use Castrol 5w-30 in my 2010 Mazda 3 2.5, I've had no issues thus far. I don't forsee any issues in the future either.

I have only ran OEM Mazda full syn 0w20 with oem filter.
Only recently (after 200K ) I have started to use Liqui Moly 0w20 https://products.liqui-moly.com/oils/special-tec-aa-0w-20-1.html
with a K&N oilfilter Gold (better flow and filtration).
