Hi Martin,
just took off the Hankook W300 tires I purchased from you. I am amazed at the tread still remaining. I will need to pick up some summer tires to replace the RS-A\'s shortly. I noticed you have the Kumho 712 Ecsta Supra in the 205/50/17 zize, would you also be able to source the Kumho ASX in that size too?

FYI.. since you have a dedicated winter tire, i would suggest a dedicated summer tire. it\'ll give you a better performance.. at the same time the asx will get you a better wear i guess (UTQG of 420 vs 280) but i THINK the 712 will be a MUCH cheaper option.. anyway.. your pick .. just figured i\'d let you know ;)

Sorry majic, but you are wrong on this one.

I just bought the Kumho ASX (KU21) in 225/40/18 from Tires23 and picked them up this weekend. Just wanted to give props to Martin for tracking a set of the ASX down for me since only US suppliers have them. Having bought my winters and summers from Tires23, I can say they are top notch with customer service and care.

The Kumho 712 is a 4 year old tire. The ASX is new and is a High Performance All Season tire. The performance difference between the two are marginal because you are comparing a old model 712 to the ASX. A better comparison would have been that the Fuzion ZRi perform better than the ASX, which they do, but I wanted longer treadwear life.

Also, the ASX are not much more expensive than the Kumho 712. We are talking about $50 more or so, when you are buying tires priced over $700...$50 difference to get the tires you want isn\'t much, is it?

cstraw:
The ASX are being mounted on my RX8 rims this week, so when I put them on my car in a week or two, I will let you know how they are.

Red.

Thanks Majic and Red,
I have researched both the 712 and the ASX and it is the treadwear of the ASX that is drawing me towards it. The general concensus is that both tires offer great performance with the edge to the 712. However, I would like to have a \'more\' performance all-season that can get me through the fringe winter season we seem to experience twice a year and I do travel gravel roads frequently which means the all-season tread should serve me better. As Red mentioned the price isn\'t too great (or so I\'ve researched) I\'ll just need to see if Martin can find some. Red, I would appreciate hearing about the ASX\'s in a week... where did you find yours?

yeah i know it\'s a 4yr old tire, but 2 of my friends have been running it and it\'s their 4th season on 712s now and they are very happy with the price, treadwear and the performance throughout their life. also i just realized that they are running 15s/16s and they might have tires with UTQG of 340 or 360 that might make a slight difference.

i do not have any experience with the ASX.. and i merely guessed that they would be more expensive that the 712s - just checked and on tirerack the ASX is a wholle 100US cents more than the 712 :D

looking at tirerack\'s latest tests for both tires, 712s (http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tests/bfg_gforce_sport_c.jsp) and ASX (http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tests/kumho_ecsta_asx_c.jsp) they are neck in neck.. one edges the other in one category and vice versa in the next.

eveyone is entitled to their opinion that\'s why we\'re here and it\'ll be up to Chris to decide. and red (and Chris if you buy them), keep us posted on how the tires hold up..

ps. honestly, for everyday driving the miniute differences between the 2 tires won\'t really make that much of a difference.

I second that. My new Toyo Proxes4 are infinately more grippy than the RS-As and I haven\'t reached their limits yet - during everyday driving they don\'t feel all that different, apart from riding slightly stiffer with the lower profile. IMO, during normal driving in dry conditions you won\'t feel a huge difference whichever tire you choose.

If you\'re looking for a more summer orientated high-performance all season, take a look at the Toyo Proxes4. It\'s rated higher than the ASX for dry summer traction. It does, however, have a lower treadwear rating.

ASX

The Michelin Pilot Sport A/S is also a good, albeit very expensive choice.

better grip, shorter life, low(no) winter traction;
longer life, less grip, some winter traction;
better grip, good life, co$ty;

Our goal is to find the balance that fits us. ;)

(Exception: bad grip, short life and costy = RS-A)

pretty much:
better grip, shorter life, low(no) winter traction; -> Proxes4
longer life, less grip, some winter traction; -> ASX
better grip, good life, co$ty; -> Pilot Sport A/S

;)

If somebody has a moment, can they please explain why one would want to go with a 225/45/17 vs a 205/50/17 tire. Could the stock wheel be used when using the 225 width tire?

Thanks,
Chris

225 is a wider tire (theoretically by 20mm) than a 205 so you get a larger contact area thus increasing grip.. the 225 tire is usually not recommended for our rim (width of 6.5\") BUT ppl have done it before and it\'s been fine..

at one of the mazda shows/days/tours - whatever you may call it - they were running 3s with stock wheels and 225 size tires.

Another reason is the type of tire doesn\'t come in size 205/50/17 (e.g. Fuzion ZRi)! The next size that yields the closest overall diameter of 205/50/17 is 225/45/17 (speaking of 17\" of course). You may go for narrower width but in general it\'s not recommanded. ;)

w/ a 225, think of it as getting xtra protection for ur rims as well against curbs

Chris,

I did a small review on the Kumho ASX over at Mazda3.ca. I got them from Tires23.

Click here (http://creednet69.proboards31.com/index.cgi?board=GeneralMazda3&action=display&num=1 114529221) for review. :)

Thanks RedRaptor,
I did some more shopping around for the ASX and couldn\'t find a better price than what Tires23 had them for. However, I also did some shopping on other High Performance All Seasons and found a set of 215/45/17 Hankook HII 405 for $115/tire. I researched them to death and determined that although they didn\'t have the same UTQG as the ASX\'s they were a great deal on a tire well liked by those who have used them. I\'ll post a review after I have had sufficient time to evaluate them.

Chris
