Rear trailing arm bushing replacement
Hi folks,
I'm new to this forum and I was hoping to get a advice from experienced TM3 forum members :) .
I have to change the rear trailing arm bushings on my 2005 Mazda3 and I had a few quesitons:
- Should I change the whole arm (that comes with the bushing pressed in) or only change the bushing and keep the old arm
- Can someone give me and estimate of time to complete the job
- Any tips or tools I should get prior doing the job to make it easier
Thanks!

Re: Rear trailing arm bushing replacement
How do you know you have to replace them? (symptoms) I have the same year car and am curious as maybe mine are on their way out too.

Hey Pokey,
I'm hearing a clunking (metal on metal) noise. Especially when I go over a steep bump (i.e. parking lot speed bump)
I've jacked the car, removed the rear wheel and use a long pry bar to move the whole suspension back & forth, and up & down - that's when I noticed there was a lot of movement coming from the front part bushing of the trailing arm. I was able to see a bit of wear (metal was touching metal).
Hope this helps.

Re: Rear trailing arm bushing replacement
I took a quick look but haven't been able to find the info for you. If you have time search M3F, there is a thread where a member used part of a ford focus energy suspension bushing kit. Some (not all) of the bushings are direct fit replacements for the mz3. I know the front lca bushing doesn't fit, but I think the rear may have.
If I have time this evening I'll try and find that thread for you.

Re: Rear trailing arm bushing replacement
Thanks Jason but I found out that I can purchase purchase the bushings for 40$ each or the whole trailing arm w/bushings for 186$ each at a Mazda dealer.
Now to find some sort of a guide (step by step) to take the whole rear suspension apart!

Re: Rear trailing arm bushing replacement
Buy it from www.rockauto.com. That's where I got front LCA's and rear trailing arm bushings. I think the bushings were $25/EA

Re: Rear trailing arm bushing replacement
Hey, I had the exact same symptoms and replaced my trailing arm bushing. Just an FYI, apparently, for the 04-06 models, Mazda will not sell the trailing arm bushing separately from the arm itself, while you can buy the bushing separately for the 07-09. This is extremely stupid, as the suspension is unchanged from 04 to 09. I had mine done at StreetPerformance, and I went in thinking I had to replace the whole arm (thank you Mazda dealer....), and Joe from MoT and Jimmy were able to figure out that I can just buy the 07-09 bushing and swap it into my existing arm, saving me money. As for the actual cost of doing the repair, I'm not sure because I also replaced the struts and springs at the same time.

Re: Rear trailing arm bushing replacement
Thanks for the replies guys. I will probably just buy the bushing by itself since my trailing arm looks in good shape.
Cheers!

Re: Rear trailing arm bushing replacement
Hey,
I have to do the same thing, did you ever find that step by step you were looking for? I can't seem to find one. If not did you go ahead anyways? If so was it difficult?
Thanks Rocky

Re: Rear trailing arm bushing replacement
Hey Rocky,
No, I did not find any step-by-step guide but I'm going to do the job over the weekend. I'll try to make post pictures of the process once I'm done.

Re: Rear trailing arm bushing replacement
For those who are interested, I purchase the rear trailing-arm bushings at a Mazda dealer for 38$ each.
Cheers!

Re: Rear trailing arm bushing replacement
i have an 04 and have the same noises. when i went for an oil change they told me the whole arms needed to be replaced. let me know how it goes in changing them and i think ill just go that route. they quoted me 300 in parts, 400 in labor and 120 for alignment. thats a little steep imo.
what were the part numbers for the bushings?
-
Re: Rear trailing arm bushing replacement
Yeah, 820$ for the whole job seems steep to me too but I'm not 100% sure what type of labour it involves. I'll let you know after this weekend!
I don't have the part no. with me. I'll post it later.

Re: Rear trailing arm bushing replacement
Part number is C2Y6-28-46X.
These are from the Mazda 5 but it's the same shit.

Re: Rear trailing arm bushing replacement
Pictures would be awesome man. Hopefully when I go to do it I will have the time to take pictures also and maybe we can combine them to make that step by step. It seems to be a common problem and a very expensive one to fix. They have already done it on my car once under warranty. However Newfoundland is brutal on cars, from the salt to the potholes, it just rips the car apart.
Thanks again and good luck.

Re: Rear trailing arm bushing replacement

Re: Rear trailing arm bushing replacement
I got the job done on Saturday! No more "clunking" noises! I have picture (not the best) but maybe it could help some of the members as a reference. I'll post them later.
RockyStrong: did you do yours over the weekend? Do you have pics?

Re: Rear trailing arm bushing replacement
so did you end up pressing the bushings out and pressing the new ones in. or did you replace the whole control arm with the bushing pressed in it already. stuff came up for me so i wasent able to do it. hopefully some time this week?
-
Re: Rear trailing arm bushing replacement
Purchased bushings only - my control-arms are in good condition plus it's cheaper!
The old bushing fell off, I only needed to saw-off the metal casing of the old bushing off the control-arm. Pressed-in the new bushing.

Re: Rear trailing arm bushing replacement
That's great you have it done. How did you push in the other bushing?
I won't be doing mine till after exams are finished, which is in two weeks. However I will be sure to take pictures to add to yours.
