    Sticky: Re: Tire Inflation FAQ

Old thread, but I thought I’d contribute. Often times “tuners” will plus size their wheel/tire package. We often think jumping from a 225 or 235 tire from our stock 205 tire will result in a larger...

So when are you guys heading out again?
  3. Re: Cayuga - Toronto Motorsports Park - Review, Tips, etc.

It was great to see so many Mazda3's out there. I stopped by with my wife and three kids, so it was a good treat. I have a '15 hatch I'm going to bring out sometime. When are you guys going to the...

    Re: 5w30 or 5w20?

I agree with most of what you say, but you should research oil oxidation and its hygroscopic properties. EVERYTHING oxidizes, and oil most definitely absorbs moisture. It's not as much an issue in...

    Re: 5w30 or 5w20?

For sure...I'm not saying keeping it in the basement isn't a good idea. But the temperatures they're talking about are 140 degrees F and higher, because oxidation doubles every 10 degrees above that.

    Re: 5w30 or 5w20?

Yeah, but you might have 50cc worth of air volume compared to 4000 cc of oil. That 50cc will give up its free oxygen pretty quickly and only have a minor effect on the oil. I'll wager the air volume...

    Re: 5w30 or 5w20?

If the oil is un-opened, it's fine the garage. It needs air exposure to oxidate and absorb moisture, which is how most oil degrades over time.

    Re: 5w30 or 5w20?

That would be easy to challenge in court. Does that mean a Focus 2.3 can't use a filter from a Mazda3 2.3?

    Re: 5w30 or 5w20?

5W20 is recommended for fuel economy reasons. Any other reason you hear is bull-dooty. The bearing clearances for the 2.3 litre are 0.7 to 1.1 thousandths of an inch (to a max of 3.9 thou). Even 5W40...
  10. Re: One step forward, two steps back (why the L3-VE sucks)

5w20 oil is used to help meet the EPA's CAFE (Corporate Average Fuel Economy) targets, and that's the only reason. Mazda's fleet has to meet the average, and to increase it, they chose 5W20....

  12. Re: One step forward, two steps back (why the L3-VE sucks)

    That's an odd rule.

*number four rod journal...I still don't know how to edit a post on this forum.
  14. One step forward, two steps back (why the L3-VE sucks)

I'm sure most of the members of this club are aware of how bad the L3-VE is. If you don't know, I'll gladly fill you in.

Back in the late 80's, early 90's, Mazda had their B-Series engines. The...

Re: 5 Auto Maintenance Procedures You Don't Need

    More pointless maintenance:

    Headlight fluid reservoir cleanout ($100-150)

    Rotary end girder greasing ($50-100)

    Muffer bearing flush ($125-175)
  16. Re: what can a sri/cai possibly do to your engine in the long run?

Unfortunately, I have two kids and we're going to have another one. I'm leaning towards an E350 wagon, which has a rear-facing, fold down third row seat.

    Re: Engine knocking/ticking sound

Yes, the crank pin journal diameter. I guess I didn't go all the way down to the bottom of the document! Haha, it's 50mm. Thanks SAS.

    Re: Engine knocking/ticking sound

This helped a lot. It still doesn't say anywhere in the manual what the rod journal diameter should be.
  21. Re: what can a sri/cai possibly do to your engine in the long run?

Yes, and when you take your car to the track where you're doing lap after lap, the CAI is the obvious winner. Definitely not for dynos and stoplight drag racing, however.

    BTW, that's quite a...
  22. Re: what can a sri/cai possibly do to your engine in the long run?

What's the deal with the Search Nazis in this thread? LOL. I've been part of automotive forums for 8 years, and I've never seen a thread related to the long-term effects of aftermarket intakes....

    Re: Engine knocking/ticking sound

LOL, I appreciate your advice, however it wasn't the advice I was looking for. It was more along the lines of "Gen1GT, you'll need to give the undertray fasteners a good soak of WD40, since they tend...

    Re: Engine knocking/ticking sound

It's not a pain, since I enjoy working on my cars. I'm on vacation too, so I have the time to do it. I just wanted to know if anyone has pulled out the crank from the bottom end, and what I should...
