i changed mine to the bosch +4 platinum.. yea i know its overkill, and i won't be able to get the full potential of it~~~ nothing but the best for my car =D
it runs pretty well, works well on cold starts and it "feels" like theres more low end power. It also seems pretty good when i floor'd it on second gear, i should try timing it to see if theres any difference~

depending on the build date of your car, it either came with the NGK ITR5F-13 Iridium spark plug or the NGK ITR6F-13
if it came with the ITR5F-13, you can replace it with the NGK TR55IX found at CanTire for $19.99/pair. The gap on the TR55IX is off by 0.007 thou of an inch; however, if you have a spark plug gapper, you can VERY GENTLY bring the gap down to 0.052" (you do not want to scrape the iridium tip with the gap tool). on the other hand, you don't have to bring the gap down to 0.052" if you plan on checking your plugs in the next 30-50k kms.
You can also get the NGK TR5IX which has a 0.039" gap (which is smaller than the range listed in the 2004 service manual: 1.25-1.35 mm {0.049-0.053 in})...you may have to increase the gap on this one to fall within OEM specs, or wait until you're boosted to utilize the smaller gap.
if it came with the NGK ITR6F-13, you can get the NGK TR6IX plug which also has a gap of 0.039".
the NGK TR55IX, TR5IX, TR6IX are $19.99/pair at CT...so look to spend $40 for plugs.
stock iridium plugs are something like $27 PER PLUG (last I checked in june 2004) because they also have a platinum tipped ground electrode (for longetivity sake...the Iridium IX plugs don't have a platinum tipped ground electrode).
if you feel like changing your plugs more often and want to take advantage of the benefits of a copper plug (copper being a better conductor for one, and there are others), you can also get the NGK TR55, or NGK TR5, or NGK TR6 copper plugs from CanTire for $6.99/pair.
iridium and platinum plugs are "hype". the major benefit of both are the longer change intervals. platinum plugs require more energy to spark vs. copper; iridium not so much vs. platinum but still not as good as copper. the disadvantage with copper is that it will need to be changed more frequently (lets say every 40,000km vs. every 120,000km for iridiums)...but, for the price of copper, the performance vs. cost benefit is better than iridium.
i've got the NGK TR55IX in mine gapped down to as close to 0.052" as possible and will go to TR55 copper plugs in the spring/summer (picked up 4 for $5.59/pair at CT on sale)....as for why the TR55(IX), well, mine came with ITR5F-13 from the factory.

Whats the plug code for the Factory NGK Iridium plugs. I think ill go grab sum. And what do u torque them 2? Or do you just snug them? Id think not

My opinion is stick with the stock plugs. From what I read, the copper plugs do work better, copper being a better conductor. However, you might have to change them sooner than the iridium ones. The iridiums last for a while so that's also a contributing factor... I changed the plugs on my old sedan.. It had 110K then I believe, with factory spec iridium plugs. Fuel mileage became better and a noticeable difference in performance like responsiveness and idle.
Also, I'm not sure, but I think MBNTO has a speed when he posted this so it might not be best for the regular 3.. Just search a bit more and you'll find the answers.
By the way, this is an old thread.
I had a regular 3 when I posted that info. I have a speed3 now and would only use iridium plugs in the speed3.

I would stay with the OEM Mazda sparkplug which is the NGK iridium

Hahaa Thanks!!! i think... but this is important shit to get the best bang (pardon the sparkplug pun ) for buck and plug and keep your 3's running smooth to the Redline and beyond ..haha ! Getting ready for summer.
I am actually looking at trying something new from NGK ... higher sparking plugs ...iridium to a new level or rather new metal compound. NGK Ruthenium HX with DFE (double fine electrode) maximizes ignitability for higher heat engines (engines with mods or drivers who like to track cars alot or for those enthusiasts who just like to rev it up and enjoy the sounds of their engines/exhaust) and PSPEŽ (projected square platinum electrode) for those supecharged 2.0L mx5 or turbo engines. They are about the same price (pennies difference) as iridium laser. I pick ed up some on clubplug.ca for $16 each tax in and free shipping. Im also planning to upgrade the ignition coils. 2020 Goal is to be 1/2 sec to a sec faster and drop some weight .
