    Thumbs up Quy's Powder Coating

I got my hands on RX-8 rims last week. I was shopping around to get the rims powder coated. I called this place called 'K&M metal coating' and they told me that they don't take 'small business' and gave me a number.
I called the number this guy named Quy told me to come in and he'll do the whole set for $150.

His office hours are 7:30 am to 3:30pm, but he said I can call him whenever I finish my work and he can drop by the shop for me. Very nice guy, he will try everything to take care of you. I asked him about the clear coating he said he would charge $250, if I'm doing the second coat.

Anyways after 2 days, he told me they were ready, I picked them up, here is the result.

I did the 2nd coat, those shiny things are from the clear coat.

Amazing result at amazing price. I highly recommend this guy if you want powder coating job done to your rims.

He's located at Brampton near Main st & Bovaird. His cell phone number is 416-219-9463. Tell him Brandon sent you and you're part of the club, he'll give you a deal.

i had my wheels sand blasted, and got it powdercoated....
many have adviced that the coating holds better if it's
    sand/bead blasted b4 coating...

a friend of mine had his WRX wheels coated,
he acidentally drop the wrench onto his wheel while
    rotating tires....and chipped an area...
he told me he powdercoated on his existing factory paint.

my painter wasn't sure if the RX8's paint can withstand the
heat in the oven...so he also adviced me to
sandblast my wheels, even though they were new wheels

as for colour matchin' the center cap,
i gave up....too hard to colour match my cap...
so i j/ made the cap and nuts all black mica (gun metal + flat black + clear coat)

i plied the emblem out, and superglued the emblem back on,
and siliconed the tabs (at the back) when the superglue is dried off

Sorry, i didn't quite understand your response to the sandblasting question. Did the same guy sandblast them? or did you take it someplace else and then take it to get it powdercoated. i plan on doing this over the winter when my steelies are on. Thanks!

I'd also like to know if the same guy sandblasted.

Overall how much did the whole procedure cost you?

    $150? for powder coating?
    then $250 for clearcoating?
    how much for sandblasting?

Since your wheels are new, you probably didn't need to pay anyone to remove the tires for you correct?

Do you know the company name and exact address? I live 5 minutes from there. I plan on getting them done over the winter.

Took 2 days for the powder coating + clear coating.

He doesn't do sandblasting, you have to get them done from somewhere else.

    $150 for the first coat.
$250 if you want to two layers of coating. Powder coating + clear coat.

When he took a look at my rims, he said the rims don't need sandblasting. He also said if I didn't like the result, he would redo it without charge.

Wow so he told you not to sandblast?
Either way the rims looks really good. How's the feel/texture? is it silky smooth or slightly grainy?

    SO BASICALLY
$250 in total for BOTH powdercoating AND clearcoating?
    That's a pretty good deal

errr, i got mine chemically stripped/ powdercoated / clear coated for $250.

The powdercoater is a member of the nissan240 forums , handle is "JEDI". Only thing is that his shop is in waterloo. Worth the drive to do it. I wasnt happy with them the first time around so he did them until i was.

But my clearcoat doesn't have sparkles like that. Looks good garu!

    EVEN better!

Waterloo isin't a big deal for me.
But I don't want to go back and forth if the job isin't done right the first time.

Does he have a contact other than me going onto the forums to get him?
    Shop name?

This makes me nervous. The idea behind the sandblasting is to get rid of any coatings or impurities that may block the adhesion of the new paint to the rims. The way the new application finish has a better chance of remaining without chipping.

That's great but by redoing does he mean he will strip away the previous finish down to the aluminum and repaint them? Or will he just redo what he previously did?

Yes that is the idea behind the sandblasting. However after he took a look at the rims in person, he said sandblasting is recommended but not needed for my set of wheels. It might be needed for your wheels. I trust his decision, I'm guessing he's been coating all sorts of metals for awhile.
I think there are some people who didn't do the sandblast before the powder coat. (TheBiz for example...)

Like I said, he doesn't sandblast. So you need to take them rims and strip away the previous finish down to the aluminum from some place else and bring it back and he'll redo the coats without additional charge.

I was happy with how the wheels turned out so I didn't complain.

Silky smooth, not even close to being grainy.

And yes $250 for BOTH powder coating AND clear coating.
That sparkling stuff on wheels that is clear coating.

Depending on where you go, last winter when i got mine taken off to put my winters on my stock rims it only cost around 60$

I think Jimmy does it for cheap, maybe even cheaper than that.

MattC Have you picked up Steelies for this winter? i think they would pay fro themselves pretty quick if you didin't have to pay for the swap of the rubber twice a year. If you like the look of the OEM rims and want that look year round that is cool.
