The instructions on the Apexcone HID kit I just received, said to disconnect the positive side of the battery first prior to installation.
I was always taught to disconnect the negative first. Are the instructions trying to kill me? Thoughts?

It doesnt matter as long as there is no closed circuit. I think the +ve (live) disconnection makes more sense.
They just want to make sure that you dont get smoked!
for how many batteries ive done at work, i never pay attention, and i havent had a problem with getting fried or anything yet....
so i really dont think it matters
I personally never disconnected the battery for a HID installation. Not suggesting that you don't, but no harm came to me without disconnecting the battery.
the instructions quite possibly are trying to kill you.
the reason why we're taught to disconnect the -ve terminal first is due to the way electrons flow in a direct current -- from -ve to +ve.
when you remove the +ve, while keeping the -ve connected, the flow of electricity from the +ve wire to the +ve terminal post may result in a spark.
why is this bad? well, lead acid batteries in cars emit hydrogen gas; hydrogen gas is explosive...if by the slightest of chances there is hydrogen gas around the battery when the +ve terminal is removed (before the -ve terminal) and there is a spark, you run the risk of an explosion.
