My 2008 Mazda 3 has around 20,000 km, and the cooling fan has started to run almost constant and really loud, sound a bit like a jet landing. It also runs for about 5 seconds after turning off the engine.

Do you have a 2008 Mazda3 or a Mazdaspeed3? If an MS3, are you letting the car and engine and by extension, your turbo, idle for between 30 to 60 seconds before turning off the ignition?
Also, where is the needle resting on your engine temp gauge when the car is fully warmed up?

Sounds like a Speed3. Mine also stays on for a few seconds after turning off the car, but it doesn't sound excessively loud if you consider that there is no other noise to mask it.
Yah it does sound like he has an MS3 and he posted it here, but he said mazda 3 so I wanted to be sure. If the cooling fan is always coming on in a regular 3, that is a different matter altogether...
The fan in my MS3 will also occasionally turn on/stay on after I turn off the car and lasts for about 5 to 10 seconds. I would say this happens no more than 10-20% of the time though. I've never noticed or heard the fan going at any other point though and the OP seemed to indicate he is hearing it all the time which would be odd...
Just an FYI, you posted this in the MS3 forums which is why I asked whether you had a 3 or MS3.
The reason your fan is coming on is because you are letting the car idle for a minute or two... Idling is bad for the engine as ideally, the engine needs cold air to help cool it down. It gets this cold air by being in motion...
For instance, if you take a drive long enough to fully warm up your engine and then put it in park and idle it for a few minutes, you are essentially placing stress on the engine and making it overheat. Hence, the fan kicks in to simulate air flow and help cool it down.
Why exactly where you idling your engine like that before shutting it off? I am curious as there is no reason you should be doing that... Even in the MS3, we need to let it idle for 30 to 60 seconds max, but that has more to do with the turbo/turbines than the engine. Hope this helps.
Your car sounds perfectly normal and is doing what it should be doing.
I was idling just to check under the hood to see if I could find were the sound was coming from. The sound only happens when the fan kicks in and for a few seconds after the car is turned off. I haven’t notice any other problems with the car. The dealer says it’s fine, but I know my car, and it’s embarrassedly loud. Could it bee something else.
Sorry wrong forum, new to this, Thanks for your help.
If fan has no any slacks and don't clinging,
may be faulty fan control module generate this sound
and fan motor working as speaker?
Sounds a lot like what I was experiencing a few months back.
For me it was the thermostat, and it had to get replaced. For about a month, if not more, the rad fan just ran loud constantly. But when I was taking it to the second dealership to get it looked at the car started to overheat. If I were to let the car sit for a bit and then start it up again it would be gone. Until I drove for another 5-10 minutes.

Meth,
Was your temperature gauge actually spiking in the high end also, or was it indicating normal when you had your issue? I ask, as the OP is saying his temp gauge is reading perfectly normal the whole time which to me doesn't seem like a faulty thermostat.
I know that if I were to idle either my 3 or MS3 in the driveway for a few minutes after a long drive, the cooling fan always kicks in to cool down the engine and sometimes stays on for a few seconds after the car is turned off.
If the cooling fan is running constantly, even while in motion, then I would agree that there might be problems with the thermostat for sure.
It was indicating normal for about a month if not more which is why the dealership was blowing me off. As soon as it started spiking I got it in to a different dealership and had to dealt with immediately.
So for my instance it did both![]()
Interesting and a little odd from a symptomatic perspective...sounds very much like what the OP is noting. Awesome info and thanks.
Leojoe,
Are you hearing the fan running all of the time, even when the car is in motion, or is it just after you start idling it for a few minutes and after you shut it off?
If it is happening all the time, then it sounds pretty much exactly like Meth's problem and you should go get it looked at ASAP as you don't want to run the risk of the engine overheating. If it only happens when you are sitting at idle and not in motion, then i still believe your car is acting normal but take it into the dealer regardless and have them look at it as they are the "experts".
I have the same problem i have an 08 GT with about 19K kms and it sounds like the fan is on all the time even when in motion and can hear it. It never did this when I first got my car. However my engine is not overheating, it maintains a constant temperature in the middle of the guage. My car was in today for an oil change and i told the technician to look at it and I get a call now from the dealership saying that they cant hear it. ITS SO LOUD!!! DEAF technicians, I am going to take it to another dealership for the next service and get it resovled there.
Hey Aamir,
What setting are you running the interior vents at? I only ask as if they are set to window, or window and defrost, the AC compressor kicks in and it is possible that is the noise you are hearing. You'd be surprised how many people do this and don't realize that it turns on the AC.
If you running the vents at any other setting than yah, there is an issue and you should take it in to be looked at.
No I usually just run it at the feet and the AC isnt on. Could it be the issue with the thermostat or the auto matic climate control. I never use the auto climate control though. Its really wierd, when I shut off the car the fan is so loud, sounds like a turbine is winding down.
It could be. You must have high temperature readings on controlsCould it be the issue with the thermostat
but in half opened thermostat case it cold be.
If fan going to overrun on cold engine after start, then not.
It is too hard to determine a cause from words.
There is so much possible causes, that you should check it yourself very carefully.
Here could be only versions and tips.
Another two exotic versions:
Check radiator grids maybe there is whistling cell.
Or blade is deformed.
That is exactly like what I had. Book an appt. and tell them that you need a tech to hear the car when you show up. Do not turn off the car so that they can walk out and hear the fan, especially when you turn the car off. If its not overheating yet, it will eventually. Get that thermostat replaced, it will be covered under warranty.
