    3250rpm @ 120kph to be exact. I have an 07 as well and it's 5spd manual.

    6-speed manual tranny? omgwtfbbqsauceftw

Well I'm kinda set on the mazda6 being my next car, maybe when that time comes I'll decide to get another 3.

My parents went from a '95 Corolla to a '09 Corolla with no desire to try out different cars.

I do 90% highway driving... I would like something that would give maybe 8 l /100km.
I'm driving the 2.3L engine with a standard transmission and I'm getting about 9L/100km. I drive about 65% highway.

If you are driving 90% highway then you would probably get closer to the 8L/100km that you are looking for. Of course a lot of this depends on your driving style too. All I'm saying is don't expect to get Honda Civic or Toyota Corolla numbers when it comes to gas mileage on the Mazda3 because you will be dissapointed. When I bought the car (and especially because I got the 2.3L) I knew I wasn't going to be getting amazing mileage. I'm happy with my current 9L/100km but I'd be happier with 8 to 8.5L/100km. I've realized that the only way to get down to those numbers would be to alter my driving style (i.e. always drive under 100 on the highway, never accelerate hard, etc). But to me that would just ruin the point of having gotten this car in the first place.

Anyway there are a few threads on here that discuss people's experience when it comes to mileage with their 3's. Check this one out.

    thanks for the info habs
I went to fueleconomy.gov and compared a civic to mazda and they were very similar.. unless this site isn't accurate?
Civic got a bit better (3mpg more).. so that doesn't seem that much.
I also don't do too much driving.. say about 16k a year and probably 80-90% of it is highway and country driving (and not too many traffic jams).

I would say I am a fairly conservative driver.. I probably drive around 110 average on highway. Once in a while I get a little crazy and go a bit faster (120-130).

While having ok fuel economy is important to me (no way I would want more then 10 l /100 km) I also want something that is fun to drive and not incredibly boring... I know there are tradeoffs... I am just trying to get some research done now so come Feb I will hopefully have ideas on what cars I want to look at.
    Thanks again

It has 2 less cylinders and far less parts. The cost to produce an engine does not depend directly on displacement. It's the overall engine design. GM, for example, produces/produced its V8 OHV LSx series of engines (displaced from 5.7L to 6.0 and 6.2L) at lesser cost than many "high-tech" DOHC V6 engines.

Don't think that highway mileage depends solely on engine RPM, as if idling at 1200 RPM in 6th gear at 100 km/h is going to net you an improvement in gas mileage. It could actually be worse than 3000 in 5th gear.

Calculating fuel consumption at a given speed involves many variables, such as wind resistance, engine's RPM "sweet spot" where it delivers maximum efficiency. 4-cylinder engines are not torque monsters, and definitely do not offer the needed torque at lower RPMs - you can't spin it too low, or else the fuel economy will actually suffer. Now, a large displacement V8 engine - and that's a different story. Those are made to be torque monsters right off idle.

I will go on a limb and state that the fuel mileage of the 2.5L will be either the same or worse in the city AND on the highway in the new Mazda3 in real-life driving.

Generally, the bigger the displacement, the more fuel it consumes. Generally.

On the mazda site for 2009 it says the 2.3 uses more fuel then the 2.0. Or will the 6th gear make up for it?
yes, the 2.3L engine has 15% more volume, and each cylinder uses 15% more air/fuel mixture each time it sucks it in. That's why the numbers for fuel consumption are a little worse for the GT model than the GS/GX.

Or would it be something like the 2.5 would have worse for city driving, but better for highway then the 2.0?
Two engines from the same manufacturer (Mazda)? There is no way that a 2.5L engine will be better than 2.0L engine in fuel consumption, highway or city.

I think autos rev a little lower than manual trannies.

    That's actually more difference than you'd think. It's the difference of getting 10 L / 100 km versus 11L / 100 km.

    I average 12L / 100 km in my Mazda (2.3L 5speed). I was hoping for 11, but oh well.

Thank you for the insightful posts gta_driver.
Obviously not all the specs are released yet, but I would think that the trim levels would be fairly close to the 09s.
I will probably just go with the GS.
The heated seats, HID headlights, and 6th gear would be a bit appealing for the GT.. but then I dont really do much night driving, don't do much 401 or 403 driving (I generally go speeding limit or just a bit above on normal highways)
, and regular heaters work fine for keepin me warm.

If the GT had the Moonroof included with it that would for sure make me get it... but at this point probably not worth the extra money, and worse fuel economy. Guess will have to see if something major will change with the trim levels for the 2010.

Interesting colours. I like the idea of 6speed for a 2.5L. Cant wait to see how the reviews are.

Iam getting somewhere around 14L/100 Km..... I change gears at 1900 -2000RPM but 80% highway driving at speeds of 100-130 does not help fuel economy, the future 3 with a 6 speed sounds good, it depends whats the gear ratio on the new 3 on the final gear, if u look at the civic Si 6 speed, the 6th speed at 100Km/h is very very close to a mazda 3 in final speed 100 Km/h. I dont see it being more efficent then a 2.0 L that we have now, u

Are you sure of your calculations? If so, this would mean that you have perhaps the worst gas mileage on this entire forum. The 3 is actually decently fuel efficient between driving 120kmph and lower in 5th gear. Your relative consumption should be around 10L/100km or lower at that speed with normal highway driving. Once you start going faster than 120kmph, your gas consumption will start to dramatically increase.

Based on your numbers, this would mean that your gas consumption is higher than my MS3 if I were to keep it in full boost driving on only city roads and no highway.

    at 120-130km/h I'm getting 8.5 to 9.5L/100KM
shifting too early doesn't help with fuel economy either

Weird, my car gets BETTER mileage at 125km/h than at 110km/h.. don't ask me why.. I tried this in the US one day.. f'in strange..
I think it has to do with the gearing vs. engine rpm bs and air/fuel mixture at a certain engine speed.. it was explained to me, but I forgot it.. kind of like Tim Allen on Home Improvement when Wilson explains something to him, and he gets is backwards..

It seems the faster you go the more fuel you use, BUT more milage you put on at shortest time. So you travel more and spend just a little more fuel.
