Default Final Coat (Electronic Rust Module)

    Hey guys,

I recently got one of those rust modules installed at the dealer instead of getting the undercoat... I feel like a retard. I'm a techie and thought "Cool, anti-rust technology..." and since I got a warranty with it, I wasn't worried... But lately I've been feeling like I made the wrong decision. I should have gone with the undercoat...

Anyone have anything GOOD to say about the "Final Coat" anti-rust module? I'm thinking of going back to the dealer to get the life time under coating just in case... Don't want to confirm in 7+ years that I made a poor decision...

On positive note, I tried to test to see if the module makes any difference, so I did the only thing I could think of: I looked at my rotors the day after a rain storm to see if I had any surface rust on the rotors... and to my surprise I only had what appeared like 3-4 "tear shaped" spots on ONE of my rotors, the rest were rust free... But I didn't have my other car out to compare... For all I know the right conditions weren't met...

Rotors will rust anyways, mine does too and I have the same thing as you. I took it because its 10 year warranty and good for resale or transferable. I also do oil spray to give that extra help.

um.. initially everyone was all gung-ho about these modules, and many people bought them in group buys for good prices. Now that reality has set in, most have realized they don't really work. It apparently really depends on the brand. I have no experience in the fact.. you'd have to run several years with it to really find out...

The consensus I've been reading is that it doesn't work as advertised. Whole lot of threads on the internet about these types of products:

I'm going to get the undercoat thrown on... I'll just use both methods since I doubt I can return the rust module.

My dealership said they'd give me a discount for the rust protection: $499 for both "top and bottom" coats... Is the dealer anti-rust coating better than someplace else? $499 is pricey, but do they use a good method? Life time vs annual re-sprays...

Plus I'd like to avoid someone going in and ripping out my panels and spraying behind them cause I don't want the panels to get all loose and squeaky...

don't waste your money on the dealer under coating, get the yearly oil spray from Krown or Rust Check. The dealer sucked you in once don't let them do it again...

My buddy put something similar on his 87 Trans Am, since new.

It is in great shape, no rust except one weird spot under the side spoiler.
However anything insulated by rubber, like rear axle, front suspension will not be affected by this unit.

He gives it a thumbs up. But I would also hit it with rust control oil too.
P.S. that car was winter driven.

    WOW old thread.

I never bothered to get rust proofing done on my 07 Mazda3. I just left the module in and hoped for the best. I got rid of the car a month ago... NO RUST other than a few spots on suspension pieces under the car, but that's normal. Body had 0 rust. Not suggesting everyone run out and buy a module, but it seemed to do /something/.

(Best of all: I kept the module and will install it on the next car)

I installed the " counteract " unit sold at canadian tire on my 2003 pontiac, i installed it on 2006. When the car died in 2011 most of the frame had perforation and the doors and body had plenty of rust. So i guess the reviews are mixed.

my wife got scammed into getting this at the dealer.

6 years later, car rear wheel well rusted, and the now around the 3rd brake light - even the ground point of the module itself is rusted. lol
she never took the car in for the annual inspections and stuff, so whatever, her loss her money.

They don't work, you pay for the warranty.

For under $1000 (spread out monthly over the 3-4 year finance term) it not only gives you the warranty protection - but it will (over time) satisfy your curiosity AND save you money (when compared to annual rust proofing treatments)

Krown doesn't guarantee to prevent rust either.

i have one of these rust module thingies. i don't think it does much... i still have a bit of rust on my 05. i think its a waste of cash that is better spent elsewhere on maintenance. supposedly this type of technology is used for boats, but the boats are submerged in a liquid which is the key... are cars arent submerged in liquid.

For those that do have them installed - did you have it installed on the car since it was brand new, or was it installed years later?

Just wondering if the module is only effective on brand new cars where there is minimal chance of any rust forming before the module is installed. And ineffective if it installed on a even a slightly used vehicle.

It is very expensive deal... Seems effective but $499 is not small amount..I hope prices have come down now

and that $500 is usually added to the financing which usually accumulates interest over 3-5 years.

It is ineffective in any car, regardless of age, unless you happen to own a rare amphibious vehicle. They only work on boats because the boat is submerged (and the water acts as a conductor). It's a matter of science.
