Gislaved Nordfrost 5 in Vancouver

Hi Guys,

I am looking for a set of winter tires for my 04 Mazda3 Sport GT and thinking of purchasing Gislaved Nordfrost 5 205/55/16 but I could not find a place that sell them. Do you know where I can buy them?

Also any more suggestions would be appreciated on on winter tires that are also good in winter and with good price. (please tell me the price if you could)

Looking for ~$700 for a whole set with steelies but don't mind paying a bit more for good set. I am quite new with tires terms so I don't know about those clearance.. those number you guys always say when talking about tire. All I know is width/ratio/diameter

hankook W409 is pretty good as well.
I have both W409 (c230) and Gislaved (mz3), they perform on the same level.

winterforce are a good tire. What size are you looking? With or without steelies?

I was looking for 205/55/16 without steelies it costs $141 each tax not included

There is also another shop that has X-Ice i2 205/55/16 + Mazda steel rims for $1200 a set tax and labor included.

But X-Ice is too expensive IMO. But I am willing to go for it if it is much better than Winterforce.

Goodyear Nordic 205/55/16 is $126.99 each but SOLD OUT

I have NordFrost5s on my car and they are excellent. If you can find them you will be happy with them.

The Firestone WinterForce is a a pretty good tire though, especially considering how inexpensive they seem to be. I know a couple of people who have them and they get to work every day driving on the same roads I do with Gislaveds so I guess that says something.

I have the Nokian Hakkapellita 5's and they are AMAZING. My first winter with these tires and I'm very impressed with how they handle in snow, slush and ice. Dy weather handling is also very good.

However they are EXPENSIVE!! A set of 205/55/16 on steelies will easily cost you a grand...but you will love every minute with them!!

Personally, I wouldn't pay the premium for Michelins unless there was absolutely no other thing available and I absolutely had to have tires. Michelins are very good but I just don't think they are as good as the extra cost should justify. But if Michelins are all you can get at least you can be confident you are driving on premium quality tires, which is worth something.

Have you tried Canadian Tire? They sell General Altimax Artics, which are very good. Their Goodyear Nordics are pretty good too, at least in deep snow. I saw Hankook W409s (branded as RC01) and some Continental winter tires in the Barrie store so you never know what they may have in stock. Or you can poke around for little local tire shops in back alleys and/or off the highway out of town. I got a good (not great, but fair) at my local Continental dealer. I know a couple of other people who got good prices Coopers at some little place half way between Collingwood and Wasaga Beach, and prompt service too by showing up half an hour before the shop opened.

Don't be afraid to try non-standard sizes either. There should be no problems with 195/60R16s and unless you are running pretty extreme lowering springs you should have no problems with 215/55R16s.

I heard some good things about the GT Altimax Arctic as well but found that CT was overcharging for them compared to what some independent tire shops were selling them for. I would look elsewhere than CT for the Altimax Arctics but yes, they are a good tire...

Now all the winter tires are pretty much sold out in most shops.

I agree Canadian Tire's prices are not very competitive. I chose the Nordfrost5 over the Altimax Arctic because the "regular" price for 4 Gislaveds was $10-12 less than CTC's sale price for 4 Generals. That said, Canadian Tire is big enough that there is some chance they may have winter tires in stock or be able to get them from a warehouse or another store. When you need winter tires now it doesn't matter how much money you could have saved by going to the vendor who would have given you a really great deal except they are sold out and can't get any more winter tires until next summer. Right now it is a seller's market for winter tires in Canada. That sucks if you are buying but there isn't much you can do about it when you need tires now.

^^ LOL, yes, I am.. nothing wrong with it.. we all trust our TV's, most of everything we have etc. and its all made in China.. doesn't mean we are happy about it, however..
and the price I paid I was not going to say no..

not true, the altimax and gislaved's are the same tire because continental owns both, hankook copied the basic design (look closely they look the same but are different) and wanli is just another copy.

continential actually sued wanli for copying the design.

sorry but it was yokohama that sued wanli not contiental but i don't think their winter tire copy has been out for a few years, i've only seen shops carry and pawn them off this year.

i've looked up the tires and it's either bad pictures (the rubber doesn't look right) but they just look like a bad copy of the gislaved's.

Beats me? My best friend has them on his Cobalt, and bought them back in November 2006, and they are Wanli. So I couldn't honestly say how long for sure.
He hasn't had any problems, nor have I.
So Yokohama also makes that tire?? Geez, this tread pattern is a slut.. I don't think I've seen a tread pattern carry so many names..

no yokohama sued wanli for copying one of their summer tires. personally i'd never trust a cheap copy for tires because it's not only the pattern that is important but also the rubber makeup.
