This may be true, however, transfer rates typically are faster via Firewire:

According to Wiki, USB 2.0 = 60MB/s, Firewire = 49MB/s..... Hence why we use 2.0 for high speed data transfer... (Laser Scanning, captures 250 000 point/second) The older version use firewire, newest versions use USB2.0, going to be apatable to USB 3.0.

I wasn't aware of this until recently. The rate Maxtor publishes may be the rate their device maxes at.
