Default Here's A Wild Idea: 2010 MID Display Swap

    Just curious...

Is it more difficult than I think, or would it be possible to swap the black and white MID display in the GT model, for the color MID display found on the GT-E trim? (Not necessarily taking navigation capabilities with it; just the color portion of it, but whatever works.) Granted, the OEM color LCD is probably a fortune in dollars, never mind install fees, but it's still an interesting concept.

    Possible? Not so much?

It's probably possible, but it probably won't be a direct swap. You'd have to splice some wires (if you're lucky, it'll just be Power, CAN-, CAN+) and who knows what you'll be left with. =) The screen probably runs on the CANBUS (much like the LCD in our current cars, which are "SANYO AUTOMEDIA") but all the CAN message-id's will surely be different on the 2010's vs 1st generation. It probably wouldn't work... Mazda tends to use different ID's even between different models, let alone generations... (I don't know anything about the 2010 screen, I'm just applying what limited info I know about the 1st gen to the 2nd gen... I'm assuming the 2nd gen screen is also interfacing with CAN..)

It would be a swap between 2 x 2010 GT models; not previous generation Mazda3's from 2009 and earlier.

The only problem with this is the navi screen is the same as the colour screen you will need a new steering wheel because the cruise buttons are where the controls are for the screen. I am unsure if the screen peices can be transferred that easily. and i am sure they thought of this but hopefully the dash sizes for the screen are the same otherwise you may even need a whole dash. I assume they were smart enough to keep it the same size. As i know mazda they make 1 harness fits all for their cars so it would be a matter of making harnesses to go to the screen. My last 3 was prewired for every option and as many of you know i took full advantage of that. The harnesses may be VERY pricey. I would contact standard autowreckers for parts as i have seen in their fresh road kill section they have many 2010's already

The GT model -- non GT-E trim -- has a MID display. It's the exact same display found in the GT-E model, except it's black and white instead of colour. So really, nothing should have to change except the actual LCD panel itself. No?

Also, my steering wheel is exactly like yours -- you're thinking of the GX/GS model. The only thing different from my steering wheel is that there's a blank spot where the "Nav" button is on the steering wheel of the GT-E trim model.

+1 My GT has this, and the steering wheel is the exact same minus 1 button.

in theory all it is is a colour screen but the colour may be smaller then the standard one now i would assume they would make the same connector

I have the e trim but am not willing to strip the car just yet it has seen enough abuse already from me changing the stock deck

The other question is: Where is the navigation system stored? Is that another device in and on its own? Or is that built into the display module (inc. LCD panel)?

i want this done for my car also.. just need to find out where the connections are made i am sure it can be done.. since mazda and other manufacturers dont really bother designing different units/harness for different models.

long story short it would take WAY to much money to do the conversion as it wouldnt be worth it. The wiring is different and their is a good chance the entire dash would have to come out

well i found out the wiring is same and i found a GT model MID basically it's same size and removal is 2 panels and you can replace... push down on the vents in the middle. and then pull up on the other seems very easy just wondering if the car will register i will attach the 2 pics of the 2 different mid connectors.

been following this as it goes along. Fingers crossed for it working.

Question though. With all the work being done swapping GT-GT MID..

Does anyone know if this would work when installing a GT (monochrome or colour) MID into a GS??
I hadn't realized how much I'd miss having DTE etc.

And assuming it "would" work plug and play on a GS. does anyone know how much the required steering wheel buttons would be from the dealer?
