On a GT, the driver's side mesh around the foglight is open, while on the passenger side, its not. I've noticed on a two GS models I walked around that also have the 2.5L engine, their mesh is closed, while on my GT, it is open. Is this in consideration for a CAI in the future?
I would think it is open in general on that side as that is where the airbox is.

Oh wow, never noticed that before... Yeah, on my GS it's closed off on both sides. Are you sure all GT's have the one side open like that? Maybe your's is just a defective mesh that someone got passed quality control without being noticed? I find it strange that it would be open on the GT and not the GS when they are both 2.5L engines inside.
Here are some close up shots (sorry, used by BB this morning)
I'm checking the other forums (M247, TMF to see if this has come up before)
The open mesh is air intake for those come with ATF Cooler intstalled.
ATF Cooler installed
Without ATF
Thanks. Apparently, midway thorugh 2010, Mazda stopped putting in an ATF cooler.
because my mesh is opened, that's where i placed the filter for my cold air intake :p
Hey guys, yea the mesh is removed just for the CAI!, just installed mine and it sits right there taking all the air ! and you can see the filiter! its kick ass!
I don't think it's there specifically for the CAI. If that was the case, it would have been there on both the manual and automative versions of the car. The ATF cooler mentioned earlier, makes more sense.
But yes, it does seem extremely useful for a CAI.
