Hey
So whenever I pump the sub pretty hard, i start to smell a slight burning smell.
My sub is a 12" type R
Anyone know what it could be?

Not sure if it's the case, but when my buddy was powering 12" Kicker L7s with his Audiobahn amp (read: underpowered), he ended up melting the leads from the speaker terminal to the coil because it was underpowered. He told me this is common if you are running your amp underpowered.

Voice Coils?
Has to be voice coils

MODS: Too many to list!
so is my sub going to blow out soon?
whats the cause for this?
Ive had my soldier joints on the connector to the coil melt by under powering the subs

Whats the RMS of your sub vs that of your amp?
500 RMS sub
the amp i think is 500 too
its the Alpine MRP M500
Is your type-r sub the dual 4-ohm or dual 2-ohm VC?
What about your amp? 500 RMS at 2-ohm or 4-ohm?
im not 100% sure, im not good with sound systems...
But when the guy installed it, he said he was able to wire the sub for the 500RMS setting, i forgot if thats 4 or 2ohm
If your sub is pushing 500 RMS then find out if that's at 2 or 4-ohm.
The specs of your amp say it pushes 300W RMS at a 4-ohm load or 500W RMS at a 2-ohm.
If your sub is the 4-ohm version then it's being underpowered and when you turn it up loud it might do a lot of damage.
Check your gain on your AMP!
Your burning your voice coils. Use the formula:
Voltage = SqROOT ( RMS x OHM )
Voltage = SqROOT ( 500 x 2 )
Voltage = SqROOT ( 1000 )
Voltage = 31.622776601683793
and use a multimeter to get your output voltage to the speakers to read no more than 31.62 Anything above that will result in potential damage to your speaker.
I learned the hard way in the last two weeks. If you need help send me a msg and I can come out and help you set your amp to your sub.
Keep your bass boost at 0 and have everything else set before you set your voltage. If you want to use bass boost then have that set before you set your voltage. Also when setting your voltage, get your volume up to 3/4 or until you notice distortion. Use a test CD at 50Hz to set the voltage and get an accurate reading.
thanks for the info,
I do remeber turning the gain up a few months ago, as i felt my typeR isnt pounding hard enough...
Its in a TypeS box, so im guessing thats the reason its not pounding.
In my old car with the TypeS box and Type S sub, it sounded crisp
now its meh...ughh my system is a mess. never sounds good enough..
but il look into it, il let you know if anything,.
thanks

your type-r must be dual 2 ohms(1 ohm or 4 ohm depends on wiring), and m500(not stable at 1 ohm) is 500w at 2 ohms.
..means your sub is at 4 ohms and amp only puts out 300w at 4ohms.
turn gain down and use proper box for your type r. type r requires more volume than type s.
underpowering is okay but when cranked up, sub will blow.
think of it as daily drive car(not always use 100% out of max hp) and race car(always use 100% and doesn't last long)
