    Default Programming a new keyfob

    Hey all,

So I lost my spare key that came with my car and I found a good price on new blade + remote. I read some other threads but I don't know if this relates....if I order this brand new set, can I program the remote myself or do I have to go to the dealer??

    Thanks

If you only have 1 Key, you will need to get the dealer to program the key transponder for you. You can program the remote part yourself though.

This has been covered before but basically...

To program a key yourself, you need 2 more keys that are currently programmed. If you don't have 2 keys the dealer HAS to do it.

To program a remote yourself, you need 1 remote currently programmed remote.

This is a stupid question but what is the difference between the key and the remote? ...based on what was posted i don't assume you mean blade when you are referring to the key..

There is a small microchip inside our keys that need to be programmed. That is what the "key" refers to.

I've got a quick question while we're still on this topic (OP sorry to sidetrack)

If I was to buy a flipkey for my car, the uncut blade part, I could get that cut anywhere, right?

Yes you can get the key cut anywhere, but it still will not start the car unless the key transponder is programmed.

Ok. My dad was telling me how you have to cut something special into the key and therefore it had to be cut by a machine at the dealership but I'm glad to know that's not the case. Thanks.

^That applies for some keys (ie VW) because they are not the standard style of key,

    Hi Guys

First post - I did a few searches but this thread was as close as it got to what I was looking for.

I bought two standard key fobs, and based on what was said earlier, I need the first one to be programmed by a dealer? I know my friends who have Mazda 3s and Protoges who were able to do this themselves - even with the first remote.

    I guess then this is a 2010 year and above thing...since that's what I have... a 2010 Mazda 3 GX (base).

If what I summed up is true, then my next question is where can I go to get this done for the best price. Whether there is anyone here who works at a dealership that can get this done...or has an idea of how much this will cost me and such...

I appreciate any input guys and can't wait to get to know you all better, through meets and stuff!

    Cheers!

If you are referring to the remote by fob, then you can program them yourself following the instructions in post #3.

You only need to go to the dealer if you have 1 key, and would like to add a 2nd key. If you already have 2 keys, you can program additional keys yourself as well.

That's what I thought - I can do the Fob programming myself.

The problem is that sequence (Open Driver Door...Lock and Unlock) works perfectly fine on my friends 2002 protoge. However when I repeat that exact same sequence on my 2010, it does absolutely nothing.

I've done it so many times...I have no clue as to what I am doing incorrectly.

So the sequence above doesn't work for your 2010?

No it does not. I've tried it at least 15 times...and done it successfully on the first attempt on my friends protoge. I have even got my friend to try it on my car incase it was me not entering it correctly, however he also could not get it to work.

    Any ideas or suggestions?

I did this but the doors didn't lock on their own. Nothing at all happened. Is there another method or am I missing something?
