The part numbers and sizes as indicated are accurate. Local parts wholesaler and retailers here in Ottawa quoted me around $ 28.00 a piece.

I picked up one from an ebay car parts seller which has a generic packaging with an NTN bearing for US$ 14.00, wohoooooo.....! ! !

Dealer says I should replace the drive belt.
Perhaps I should get this pulley as I believe I have been hearing the pulley noise you guys are talking about for a while now.

Kudos to the thread! Picked up a DAYCO #89015 at Cawthra Automotive for $30 - replaced it in 10 minutes. Hope that stops the squeal.

hmmm great post, this is just as easy as on my old VR6. (I did the same to on it, repacked the bearing, then ended up replacing it). Interesting that other posters mentioned noisy belts in wet weather. what a PITA, very embarrassing in the drivethru. I found that I cracked the shield on the bottom and used a plastic bottle to fashion a new cover. I sourced the chirpy kinda noise at the bottom, and sprayed heavily with graphite lube... it got quieter, but has now come back with the heavy rains recently. I suspect it's not the tensioner

    Similiar problem??

Hi everyone, I was wondering if anyone has had this problem/ or has a suggestion for me.
The car does this in both warm and cold temps, but it's more noticeable while cold. I notice a noise, which sounds like it's coming from the engine compartment, that sounds like gurgle. I hear this in addition to the normal engine noise, it's almost in the background. It typically happens when the engine is between 1500 and 2000 rpms, only when accelerating. Once I get above 2000 rpms, the noise vanishes. The vehicle only makes the noise while in gear and driving, if I rev it in the driveway, I don't hear it. I took the car to the dealer last week, and after an hour of driving and inspecting it, they claimed they couldn't reproduce the noise.

    Any ideas?

I have very similar sound coming as I accelerate between 1500-2000rpm, and when you are doing at 70km/h at ~ 1700rpm the noise is usually at it's loudest - for me at least.

Order the part, replace it, and you wont be dissapointed. It fixes the issue.

    bwar,

This is exactly how it started with my car, but eventually it got louder and the pulley made noise even if it was warm outside.

Regarding belt squeal, what I found out is that my belt and the water pump pulley were glazed. Basically, the exterior of the belt is shiny and the pulley looks almost polished, where they should have more of a matte finish. I guess the old tensioner pulley was creating too much resistance, probably most of it during cold weather, as it made the most noise then, and that created some slipping between the pump and the belt itself.

Easy fix for that is to take a small strip of 150 or 200 grid sand paper and rough up the shiny part of the water pump pulley. I did that and in the recent rain I only get a small chirp (it was a squeak before) on cold start, that quickly goes away after few minutes of driving. If the air is not too humid, the belat does not make any noise during cold starts.

Do a google search of the following parts:

    DAYCO: 89015
    GATES: 38008

this is the part that is making the noise from engine compartment. I suggest Street Performance to replace it for you (once you order the part) or you can DIY if you are good with your hands/patient.

Alright...my car is going into Mazda on Monday morning.

I informed them that I thought it was the tensioner pulley. The mechanic did disagree however said he would check it out on Monday. Is this all you would recommend I bring forward? I want to make sure I know what I'm talking about so I don't get nailed for anything else that may be unnecessary.

He will have to drive with me to hear the noise during low RPM'S....

Dont go to Mazda (unless you have a budget of at least ($300). They will replace your belt tensioner, which will cost $140 + tax + labour ($100 minimum).

Google the parts I mentioned, order from online, let the part come. Call street performance in Markham (maybe far for you) then they can install it for you for cheap. Installation probably wont be more than $40 and part is about $25.

    Save and XoomXoom 4ever!

Yes you are right...considering my 3 year warranty expired 26 days ago - only power train left...

I will get the work done and re-post in case it benefits others.

Thank you all very very much.

I second that going to the dealer probably will not accomplish much. I did that as well, they just said that belt squeak is normal, they never even bothered checking the pulley for play in the bearing area.

You guys were right... Went to Mazda Dealership. Tensioner Pulley belt inspected. They said it's fine. $65.00 later, noise still present. Will just get the tensioner pulley replaced at another shop I've gone to for cheap. Should have listened to you all and skipped Mazda Dealership...

Have the same issue on my '07 Mazda 3 GT sedan, 5 speed Auto. My issue might be different not sure, I describe it more like a gurgling sound when coasting at a constant speed (foot lightly on gas pedal) and it happens for me at less than 2000 RPMs. For example 60 km/h, 5th gear, 1800 RPMs.

I will be forever grateful if this tensioner pulley solves the issue. OMG OMG

Questions: How long will the replacement last in general?

And would a local car shop be able to get this done?

Very relieved I found this thread

The gurgling sound you have under 2000 rpm with lite foot on gas is this issue - this is exactly what I used to have.

The part on Amazon is the EXACT part I ordered for my 2007, no issues there.

Quite a difference it will be on cold mornings after the fix

I thought I had the same issue posted here so I replaced my tensioner pulley with the GATES: 38008. Last week wasn't cold enough so I did not hear the gurgling sound, but the last two days the sound has returned. I may have another problem...
