Just wondering if anybody else had noticed that the Shell Canada site no longer lists Shell V-power as being ethanol free? I'll find out for sure next time I pass by a Shell station....

The shell station I went to last weekend at Hamilton and another Shell in Kingston still says 91 Octane contains no ethanol.
all gas companies use ethanol in their gas....with the exception of shell 91. however, it looks like there are reports that as of late last year, shell stations that were renovated no longer have the ethanol % content sticker on the pumps...possibly meaning that shell 91 now has ethanol in it.
as for Sunoco/Petro 94, it for sure has ethanol in it as the ethanol is used to increase the octane rating.
Shoot, I was planning on using Shell V-power for the winter months (better mileage) and then Petro 94 for the summer (better perfomance). Can anyone confirm if Shell V-Power now contains ethanol?
Tried calling Shell (1-800-661-1600) but after 20 minutes got tired of the hold music and gave up.
Within their MSDS catalogue, there are only two V-power products:
- Shell V-Power
- Shell V-Power (Marked)
I believe the only difference between the two is that the 'Marked' version contains dye. Neither list any amount of Ethyl Alcohol (ethanol) as a component of the fuel, unlike for example Regular Unleaded Ethanol Gasoline.
If someone can get through to the fuel specialists on the customer service line that'd probably give the best answer, but from what I've dug up it appears that V-Power remains ethanol-free.

^ Your not to good of a digger , Shell struck a deal jan 4/2011 with a ethanol producer, so my guess would be that shell fuel will contain ethanol in the future.

If you google further you'll get more info.
Interesting find, but Shell fuels already make use of Ethanol blends in the lower grades, so I don't find their investing in new Ethanol production all too surprising.
It's certainly possible V-power may become an ethanol blend at some point, but I don't see that specific article you linked giving much indication that that will be the consequence.
At any rate, at present it would appear it is still ethanol-free since the MSDS indicates so - if the composition is changed to include ethanol, they will have to by law update the MSDS entries as well.

I'm actually suprised that they haven't added ethanol to the 91 yet, someone should call the shell hotline and ask. I totally forgot about the 87/89 fuel's and they already do come with ethanol, good counter! haha
Here's why Shell V-Power may have ethanol in it now....the Canadian government has mandated an average of 5% ethanol in gas across the country as part of the "Renewable Fuel Standard"....
shell already met the average though - 10% (87 oct) + 5% (89 oct) + 0% (91 oct) = 15%/3 = 5%
just when to shell, mine still has the sign saying that 91 is ethanol free...if its valid or not is unknown.

anyone can take a sample of gas and test the ethanol content... you just buy a special testing kit which is basically a bottle with markings showing the content in it.... you add water into the bottle, then the gas (both of which at indicated amounts) and you shake it to get the gas to mix with the water... if there's ethanol in it, the ethanol will separate from the gas and become part of the water, which will clearly indicate in the bottle
It could be a winter thing only.....most of the time it's used to prevent water build up within the tanks and create easy startup in the cold weather months.

I didn't know 91 at Sunoco (petro canada now) is ethanol free, will stop by a local Petroco and take a look. As a side note, I was up in Richmond Hill at the Shell (Leslie and Rutherford, near Audio Heaven) and there was indeed a sign there saying that 91 V-Power contains no ethanol.
when there is doubt, fill a litre in a jerry can and test yourself!
It's not that simple...
All Petro Canada's that were always petro Canada's and only have up to 91 Octane - will have 0 ethanol in the 91 octane.
If the Petrocan is a re-branded sunoco, and sells up to 94 octane - then ALL grades including the 91 will have up to 10% ethanol.
Basically, only the Petro's who sell up to 91 will have no ethanol in their 91.
Copy of my email with them
and my reply to this undue confusion wasGood afternoon D.J.,
Thank you for contacting Petro-Canada Customer Service online.
In Southern Ontario, from Sarnia to Bellville, up to Port Perry – Gravenhurst, Petro-Canada branded stations, without Ultra 94, the RegularClean 87 and 89 will contain ethanol while SuperClean 91 gasoline contains no ethanol.
At Petro-Canada branded stations with Ultra 94 available, all grades of gasoline will contain ethanol. The Ethanol content in the gasoline is 10% maximum.
All current Sunoco branded stations in Ontario sell gasoline containing ethanol. The Ethanol content in the gasoline is 10% maximum.
At sites where ethanol fuel is sold, there is a yellow label affixed to the pump on the upper steel cladding above the pump top or on the pump itself (at older installations) warning “Gasoline may contain up to 10% Ethanol”.
Ethanol Blended Gasoline available in Ontario, supplied by all companies, contains a maximum of 10% ethanol. Only grade of gasoline that will not contain ethanol is Premium Octane 91 gasoline, as long as the site is not selling a 94 Octane grade. This level of ethanol is the standard addition rate throughout the petroleum industry. To avoid purchasing gasoline without 10% ethanol, one would have to purchase RegularClean 89 (contains 5% ethanol) or Super Clean 91 (contains 0% ethanol) at a Petro-Canada station that does not sell Ultra 94.
However, as more environmental regulations come into effect, such as this years Canadian Government’s Renewable Fuel Strategy, the increased use of biofuels, such as ethanol, is being mandated in the blending of finished gasoline.

OK, got it, thanks for making that perfectly clear...
What I read there was - If you really want no ethanol, just tell your girlfriend to go to Shell where they label their pumps with the ethanol content per grade of gas (zero in their 91) with no additional layers of confusion.
Thanks,

But now shell is being called into question... CRAP.
