I guess I'll just assume Mazda has taken this into consideration in their design and that no damage is being done.
I had this happen too, lots of steam coming out from under the hood where the water must have splashed onto the intercooler. I had turned my car off during the wash, but maybe I should have left it running? Regardless, it's a hood scoop and surely Mazda must have thought of situations where water might get forcibly pushed into the opening (garden hose, hand-held pressure washer). It didn't seem to cause my car any harm, I drove around for a bit and the steam went away.

i always turn off my engine while im in the car wash. i don't want my intake to suck up all the water that gets under the hood. just to be safe.

Yeah I figured it would be ok because I'm sure lots of water gets in when driving in a downpour. The intake (stock) seems to be well covered from the water.

Do you have a SRI or stock intake?

Yeah good idea. I'll probably do the same when/if i get a SRI installed. But with my stock intake, it seems covered well enough.

If you'll notice, there is a rubber seal around the intercooler (on the underside of the hood scoop), which would make sense to me.

o times during winter..as stated earlier in thread protect it well in the summer with wax and whatnot..i let a small layer of dust build up nearing the end of summer so that it acts as a protectant against the salt and s^&* in the winter. In the spring when the roads have been cleaned and most of the salts gone wash the car well and all the dust salt and garbage comes off with it...the ceo of RUST CHECK gave me that little bit of info lmao..i've been doin it..wurks fine so far..

All year round, regular car washing is vital, but the winter months are particularly important. In contrast to other seasons, winter brings about a number of external (and uncontrollable) variables that might have a significant impact on your car.
If you must, warm up your car by taking a brief drive before having it cleaned. During the entire wash, be sure to keep the heater on.

I think what is vital is having a rust treatment to your underbody like a Krown - https://www.krown.com/en/
Create a barrier between the metal and salt.

I will not wash the car in winter (Mine stays outside).

If your car in a warm parking space then getting the a rinse
Rinse it with fresh water - not a car wash or a coin operated wash - they tend to recycle the water and do not desalinate their water.

Krown is best when its hot outside ... but you can do it all year

They pretreat the surface before spraying to remove as much debris before spraying
