Will be swinging by MoB today for an update on when I can get my car in for a fix. Same problems here. B-pillar and rear wheel wells. My wheel wells were done at the end of last summer and they started rusting again.

Hey just wondering if you can update the status of your car.

My '06 has pillar rust and I also just had my wheel wells done last August and the rust is back more then ever. I hope to bring it mine in next week.

I'm just fixing it myself, I looked through the paper work and the dealer repaired the panel 2x already and its rusting again. Doing it yourself and properly is the best way!

Thanks for posting the pics. My wheel wells are quite similar. Very discouraging when you consider the dealer worked on it less than a year ago.

My 05 is riddled with rust. Most of the 3s now have it I'm noticing. My B pillars are shot, rear wheel wells, and now I noticed it all around my rear center brake light. Looks like crap. Thankfully the car is red so it doesn't show too badly. I'm gonna take it in to the dealership this weekend to see if they'll cover it under warranty. Next month will be 6 years since the car was bought so it's now or never.

Too bad it's rusting out cause other than that, it runs as good as new with 215000 km on it.

If you're going to Whitby Mazda, they were the least bit helpful when I talked to them about rust on my B pillars last year.

I got that much. Just not sure if the part itself is removable to get to the rust gremlins

Ya I can see mine in the door too. Sanding, bondo, glass all that jazz will just look bad on inside.

Not sure if anyone is gonna very read this, thought I bring something to the conversation. So I trying to work out this issue myself, I thought I discuss what I have discovred thus far. So when started to sand the one of pillars thinking the rust was one the surface my god was I wrong no one every do this if you arent ready to take on the job of cleaning all the rust and getting rid of the rust, I wasn't ready I have not so great job on the area I plan to fix it sometime later when I have the time, the rust is only comestic anyways.

So back to the matter at hand, the area which so on the outside the black trim that bubbles gives us all a headache is the Door Applique, this what @sol_searchin was asking about and this was what bubbles on the outside, this is just vinyl and the rust comes for insider the door. This can be replaced and purchased oe, part number is BP4K508V3B i think that the same for all of this this would be a finshing touch after the door rust us repaired.

This reason why I think this area rust is because of bad weatherstripping bewteen the two door, the weatherstripping on the rear or is not very effective is peels really easy, it is supposed to seal the gap bewteen the two door, plus its just not a strong seal, there is a gap under the seal when rust starts and it rot out the inside of thin sheet of metal on the door frame for atleast the rear door and the front door is literally exposed to the enviorment. But at he same it seals in mositure and that time to dry and that just a bad combination. Really if you see it on the outside on the black applique, its already to late the metal in that part of the door frame is already rusted out, take it for someone who had a panic attack when rust was crumbling in my hands.

I guess the only way to fix it is to slow it down maybe improve the weather trim by either replacing the rear door weatherstripping or putting some universal edge weatherstripping on the door, but you run the risk of creating an area of moisture. The best solution is to have the rust piece cut out and have it welded with new metal, that is expensive probaly best to never try to work on it, I learned that the hard way.

Since my car a 2006 with 190km I am not gonna pay to get it fixed, just bought it as my first car, pretty good condition and no major rust aside form the door trim and alittle around the door well. In the short term I rust sprayed rust convertor and rust paint on top all the areas with rust and I will regually spray rust inhibitor in that area and keep water and air out the best I can. What my long term plan is, if I ever get to it is to sand down as much rust as I can on bought sides and paint the area with POR15 rust paint, that should seal and stope the rust really good, then I bondo on top, paint and clear it and buy the applique it out it on top of the outside, then change out all the weather stripping with factory oem. That should fix it for a few years and my poor atempt with the front driver door, where I used some canadain tire rust covertor, bondo and paint and clearcoat, lets see how long that lasts. The rust damage is pretty serve and hopefully its doesnt ruin the door or mess up the windows in anyway.

So that what I have discovered, I will post log if I every try to do the long term plan, hope the rust inhibitor is enough to slow the rust down. I plan to drive the car down till it dies atleast 3-4 year out of it would be more then enough, doesnt mean it can't look good, paid 2000, but that bit of rust still kinda sucks.

*sorry for the long read on a old post, not many people talk about this issue so I thought I leave something for people in my shoes, I have seen it on just about every gen1 mazda3 with more than 100k, so i assume its common, especially with the weird weather here in the GT.
