Default Anyone had sound-deadening in their car? (hushmat etc)

I'm going to be getting the 4 speakers in my 2011 Sport changed for some Pioneers likely (without sub/amp). The car audio guy here is recommending getting some hushmat in the 2 front doors, this will deaden some road noise, and increase overall sound quality.
He says the difference is huge when compared to getting the speakers without it.

Obviously there's people who don't have the mats and do have aftermarket speakers, I just wanted to get your thoughts on this. Are you guys happy with your sound? Does the road noise pose a significant problem?

This could also just be a profit markup for the garage, but this place has won numerous awards for their car audio work and was highly recommended by a friend. I'm just worried about long term effects of getting this mat put in. Any thoughts are welcome.

there's significant road noise in our cars, i don't see getting the matts put in to be a negative add on. aside from that there's really nothing i can add to this matter as i've no experience with audio systems. gl with the mod though, and i guess welcome to tm3 as well =]

Yeah we do get quite a bit of road noise. It never bothers me but when I've spent the $$ on the audio system I definitely want to enjoy it.

I think I'm going to listen to a system without the mats and see what happens. Should be an exciting mod nonetheless.

Definitely a worthwhile addition. Quiets down the cabin significantly

Didn't notice much change at all when I had mines done. It does reflect the music to give better highs if u are going to play your music loud.

It did't really eliminate road noise though, as it mainly comes from the floor. It doesent hurt to have it done. What is he charging you for it?

The placement of the sound deadener material will effect the amount of road noise entering the cabin - door vs wheel well vs floor boards, etc.

Pretty much, if you sound deaden to eliminate road noise then you would have to do the WHOLE car (roof, floor and doors).
If it is just because your upgrading speakers then it wouldnt hurt to do the doors, but when adding a subwoofer you would want to do the doors and the trunk aswell.
I have fatmat on my floor, roof, side walls and trunk and it makes a big difference. when it rains you can actually hear the rain coming from your windows and not your roof.

As others have said. If you are putting it in to reduce road noise, it will make a marginal difference. There are so many flanking paths that you'd have to take care of too including but not limited to: door seals, window seals, floor carpetting, wheel well, engine firewall, headliner, etc.

All the "sound deadening" material does is add mass to your door so it doesn't lose the acoustic energy through radiating vibrations that dissipate through the door panel.

    Thanks for the responses guys!

I'm not looking to reduce road noise, it would just be an added bonus.
I talked to the guy today and I'm heading in on Monday to listen to his system, further discuss some options, and book an appointment to get this beast laced up!!

I will resurrect this thread once its done and I'll post a review of the system and the hushmats. I'm sure it'll be great reference for others. There's obviously a LOT of people interested in aftermarket audio without headunit changes etc etc.

    Thanks!

Had mine done to my car,(i used B-quiet).It does make a world of difference, of course
sound dampening material is only half the story ,it will reduce vibration and harshness but to shield your car from outside noise you need a closed cell foam lining as well.Dan installed it , he put sound dampening b-quiet and closed cell foam on the floor of the car, because most of the road noise will come from there. I also added b-quiet to the trunk as well, the car runs more solidly now and there is less noise when i take it on the highway

This is what you need to do to really get rid of the road noise in our cars.

I've used other products but dynamat truely is the best.

This would work if A) you didnt have rust proofing and b) alot time
If you have rust proofing your pretty much screwered with the inner door panel shell.

Other than that the full interior fatmat wrap was very easy when i did it to my car

Anybody ever use or apply Robberized Asphalt Undercoating? ...I 've heard it works relatively good for soundproofing and insulating. It would be a 'lighter' method then using Dynamat or whatever.

I'm thinking of applying it to my complete floor pan when I put my new carpet in....thoughts...

I dont notice any difference in road noise but that was only because all mine was put in the trunk. This made a big difference. Once the trunk is closed, you wouldnt even know I had a sub in it.

The only downside is that this stuff is heavy as well. Putting a whole roll in there is pretty heavy lol

Did the doors and trunk and have noticed quite an improvement in reducing noise entering the cabin. What you'll really gain is solidity and feel of the door when the bass drops. You'll no longer hear the pinging of the doors when they're closed. Instead, it's a solid thump. I still have this annoying rattle somewhere in the trunk that's driving me nuts with the music turned up. I suspect it may be from the exterior of the vehicle.
