I just picked up a 2005 Mazda3 GS, and wondering if the 2.0L engine in it is using a timing belt or a chain.
I ask since the car has 138000km, which is about time for a timing belt change (if it;s belt)

i never knew always thought it was belt. good to know.
I cried tears of joy when I found this out a year ago... chains FTW
I bought the mazda3 because it was chain driven. I hate belts. Ever see a timing belt? It's nerve-racking to think that the tiny rubber (and metalic fiber ropes inside) belt with tiny rubber teeth, is responsible for pulling the top of my engine aligned with the bottom. A thin rubber belt fights against the compression and combustion of the engine.
But timing chains, rarely rarely snap. However they require a good lubrication system in order to stay in work. Mazda3 uses a thin timing chain, so make sure you stay on top of your oil changes and levels
