    Default Another Abused Tire Question

Hey, first off, I want to apologize for this thread, because i do too hate see these questions liter threads all over the internet. But ive been searching now for a while and have yet to come up with a definitive answer. Ive recently come into possession of 4 brand new 245/40/18's. I was currently shopping around for 4 225, or 235/40/18's, but got to thinking. The fenders are rolled, i have rims that are 18X8.5 with an offset of 48, the car is lowered, will these fit or am I gonna have to sell these 245's and look for some 235s or 225's.
Thanks, and once again, i apologize for another "will it fit" thread

    Aren't you buying Coils?
Because then it will depend on your coil height.

    Essentially, yes.
Your fenders are rolled, so that will help.
245 on 8.5 is going to be pretty thick. I'm going to be running 225 on 8.5 this thursday.

These will look bad, and really arent the best size for the car. You will need coils as these will raise your car over half an inch.

Not necessarily the width, but the width and the side wall height.

40% of 245mm is 98mm -> 3.85" in height, on both sides of the rim.

I believe is what fxgt was referring to, I may be wrong.

Yup. Its a common misconception that "40" series tires all have the same sidewall height.

Like Hyperion says, the "40" is a percentage of the width, so his 245/40 will be over 1/2" taller than a 225/40 (most commonly used on the Mazda3).

The sidewall number (referred to as profile) is the percentage in mm of your width. 245x.40 is 98mm vs 225x.40 which is 90mm (common 18" size). Some members here ran on 225/45/18 on (stock rx8 18x8 and tire) which is a 101.35mm sidewall and it was fine (pro-kit).

If anyone wants to go w i d e, then look into 255/35/18 which is 89mm (about the same height as 225/40/18).

EDIT: if i remember correctly, macguyver is running some really wider pilot sports, like 245 or something. send him a pm.
