Default [PSA] COIN-OP USERS, Please read this thread

Attention All COIN-OP users it has come to my attention that despite all my and Bryan’s warnings TM3ers are still using the brush in coin up facilities.

I know that thought that goes through your head when you read this

“Shyt man…that brush isn’t doing any harm to my paint”

But I will show you never before seen visual proof that yes it does do harm. The pictures below are from a vehicle that is ONLY 3 weeks old. It has only been to a coin-op facility once and has never seen the dealers “detailers” except when prepping for delivery.

You can also take this Oath if you would like to swear your allegiance to defect free paint

I, {User Name or Other}, do solemnly swear that I as a caring member of the Toronto Mazda 3 Club will never use harmful product and/or methods that will cause the deterioration of my vehicle’s paint. I promise to follow the good and true advice of the Elevated Car Care School of safe detailing practices by reading articles and asking questions of methods and products that I do not understand. I will do my duty to be a knowledgeable and respectful owner to my vehicle.

Is it still cool if we only use coin-ops for their spray guns?

    Basically,

    1. Spray car with water
    2. fill buckets with water
    3. handwash outside the coin-op drive in
    4. drive back in to rinse with spray gun

I wouldn't suggest trying to hand wash the car outside if it's during the day and sunny. You'd have to be the Flash to get it done and pull it in before the soap dries on the car. Best bet is to wash the car very early in the morning or at night, that way you don't have to pull the car out at all...Most places won't give a damn if you do it during 'OFF' hours, usually.

Lets just say, don't use any of the brushes unless its to get into a tight area.

I hand wash in the bay, even if there are other cars around. It only takes me marginally longer than someone using the foam brush.

Good grief, those brushes are filthy. Who in their right mind would take that to their paint?

I'd pay to see this technique. Define marginally. I'm trying to picture a dude holding the gun with one hand, and a wash-mitt in the other hand, and it ain't clicking too well in my head. (looks funny atm)

Okay then. What do you suggest for someone who lives in an apartment and has no access to a water hose? Car wash at gas station (touchless...don't get me started on the so-called "softtouch") scares the crap out of me as it took chips out of my paint on my old car. At least at a coin op, I can apply the necessary pressure and never seem to have an issue. Mind you, the owner takes pride in the equipment and cleans and replaces often so that may have been a factor.

You guys are ridiculous. I did this for years when I lived in my condo.

    1. Put in minimum amount of money in to get the water running. First fill up 1-2 buckets with the rinse setting. I have a lid that I use to help keep the water in the bucket when filling. With the leftover time, turn it to soap and spray the car down.

    2. Add soap to your buckets and proceed to hand wash as you normally would.

    3. Put in minimum amount of money to get the water running and rinse the car

    1. Go to car wash. Minimum is $3 for 3 minutes.
    2. Spray car with high-pressure soap for 2.5 minutes. 30 seconds is used to fill my bucket. +1 if you have a second bucket (I know the detailers will cringe but I don't always have one or bother to fill it with clear water. High pressure wash gets rid of most grit etc anyway)
    3. Hand wash one panel at a time. Rinse out wash mitt in bucket after each panel.
    4. Another $3 for 3 minutes of high-pressure rinse.
    5. Dry car.
    6. Drive home fresh to death.

I will raise you a better method for condo-livers. Optimum No-Rinse (ONR). Fill up two $5 buckets at home, add a few capfuls of ONR, and go to town with 2-bucket method. Panel by panel, you wash and dry the one you work on before moving to the next.

If your car isn't massively dirty, an amateur can do the whole (well documented on the web) process without putting swirls into the paint.

Good call but that's only good if the car is barely dirty. There's no way I would be scrubbing bugs and other crap off the car with just ONR.

I did this in my last condo, where the visitor's underground lot had a nice secluded spot for me to wash in. My current place is pretty well traveled, and in both places people aren't supposed to work on or clean their cars.

Most coin-ops have large disclaimer signs that clearly state "no bucket washing in bays". After hours sounds like the best solution if you must go to a public coin-op.

My avatar describes my reaction to those questioning my bucket-washing.

J/K. So far it hasn't been an issue. I try to avoid going when things are super busy.

I do something similar at the coin-op except I high pressure rinse, then hand wash (2 bucket), then high pressure rinse. I like the idea of high pressure soap instead, but is it ok to spray with the soap on a dry car? Or should you first rinse?

There's a fella named Scottswax over on autopia.org

He's a big mobile detailer, and clean or dirty, he cleans(ed) exclusively with ONR with no damage with a good system and proper procedures. YMMV

I figure I'm just consolidating two steps into one. What's the difference in rinsing with clean water, and rinsing with soapy water? I mean I use enough soapy water to actually rinse the crap off, its not like I'm just soaping it up and leaving it all sitting on the paint.

Good point. I actually did this on Saturday and it worked well. I then used the Meguiars waffle weave to dry, then sprayed some quick wax and used a thicker mf towel to buff. Also, anyone with a black car, I used TW Black Box system. It's messy (wear gloves), takes long (I did it by hand), but it's pretty good. It covered up some of the minor swirls and microscratches, and gives a nice gloss. But I know that I need to use some ultimate compound, then sealer, and then wax to get a better finish. As much as I like doing stuff like this, it's a lot of time to commit.
