    Default Homemade CAI

So I've been looking everywhere and just couldn't find a CAI that fit in my price budget.. So I decided to make one.. I looked at the upper lid of my air box were the Maf sensor was housed.. I noticed I could probally cut a box apart to get a maf housing with hose connectors on either side.. So I bought a used stock air box and cut the maf housing out of it.. I also cut the mesh to allow more air flow.. From there I needed to make an intake to get into the lower fender.. I managed to take 3" PVC piping and tuck the pipe behind the light instead of under the frame rail like most CAI's. It took 2 angle peices that were 45 degrees and a strait peice about a foot long between them I used PVC glue to hold the peices in place.. I used the stock boot between the intake manifold and maf sensor housing. The little box was capped with duct tape to remove it from the system.. I took my second one and cut most of it away to clean my build a little.. The filter landed nicely in the lower fender though it was a a bit of trouble to get it in fully assembled.. The intake sounds much louder and very clean.. I'm going to try to attach photos but I really don't know how.

The link should take you to my album

The entire build cost me abou 50 bucks. 10 for a used air box. 10 for PVC parts. 30 for filter. All parts came from Canadian tire except the air box.

10/10 for originality, now to work on the styling.

Probably should try to find an alternate solution to closing that opening other than duct tape.

Duct tape is not really a suitable material for automotive use. It doesn't do all that well when exposed to high heat and you may end up with a large leak down the road.

Yea I was thinking it would be a weak spot.. And as for styling. You can't even see it under the battery cooling tube so really Id probally just leave it.

Kenyork originally posted something similar to this in using the stock airbox... Unsure where his thread is.

I will try and do a video for you after work tonight... And I really dont know of any others doing this. I searched for a couple of nights because I was hoping to find someone that said its relatively safe.. I couldn't find one so I decided to give it a try.. I did the the sticky with the lower resonator and upper one removed.. And 3" PVC pipe and the lower tube.. So far everything seems good.. I've had a obd2 reader on it since the mod and no codes.. My emissions actually went from yellow to green .. Good mod so far.

Nice! I DIY'd an SRI on my old Jetta, but it was brutal lol. Threw CEL's like a mofo, sounded like a jet engine. Glad yours has worked out better haha

I did this on my 08 2.0L. If it has more power it isn't enough for the butt dyno to detect. It is a bit louder and does lower the pitch of the intake sound somewhat.

I left the Helmholtz reservoir between the MAF and the throttle body.

Looks like we're seriously going to have to rename this section to Arts & Crafts

I'll give you credit for the idea and going through with it, but you couldn't afford the $50-$80 it cost for a used intake?
Do you even have an air filter on the end of it? It doesn't look like you do from the pictures....

It cost him at least $50 for all this, the stock air box is like $40 if not more. Plus the PVC was probably another $15 or so, if not more.
Plus the duct tape, that shits expensive.

it cost me 10 bucks for a used air box. had a peice of 3 inch pvc pipe. needed 2 angles that cost 5 a peice so 10. the filter cost 30 bucks from canadian tire it wasnt shown in the pictures because i had to go back and get one the proper size and it was dark by the time i got back so i threw it on the car quick, its why the in car picture is sorta darker. time was 1 night after work. and seriously i only used the duct tape to try it that night, i have capped the opening properly with a pvc part cost 5 bucks. so 55 bucks to make a CAI.. one that doesnt throw CEL codes, seems to increase power a little bit, and sounds very clean and deep... Beet that then u can bash my idea... so far thats about 200 dollars cheaper than one found on ebay, and i see most of the benifits of a new one.

I paid $50 for my intake with filter. No CEL's, no running around, no fabricating, installed in 5 minutes. And it's a really nice blue colour.
