    Default 1-2 shift grind

Let me just pre-face by saying I've been driving manual vehicles since I learned how to drive (12 years)

I've noticed the 1->2 shift on my transmission is hard to land 100% quickly, without grinding.

Normal driving sure its fine, but when its a quick 1-2 with boost kicking in, I often times find its almost as if the gear is caught just before it drops in, meaning my clutch foot is already coming back up = grind.

I might have to modify my shifts, but I'm just used to being able to drop it into 2nd and slip the clutch no problem

Is this something the aftermarket clutch plate would help to alleviate?

It looks bad when launching and all you can hear is the grind

    Driver mod needed...

J/k, a lot of us MS3 guys have switched over to ford trans fluid and it helps a lot.

Thanks guys, will check into the tranny fluid.

Warranty check, but I doubt its that bad... I think its 50/50 on me rushing the clutch before the gear is engaged, and switching out the fluid

Oh shit, I forgot I had 3 bottles of this stuff stashed away from the last GB!

Also, aftermarket rear motor mount solves this problem.

Is it really that wide-spread a problem?

Also there is no 'one' fix it appears?

I was watching the Jbarone video where he adjusts the shift cable too, and it looks like the same sort of issue... Either 1-2 is stiff, or 5-6 is stiff.

In my case 5-6 is stiff, but 1-2 just doesn't wanna go in when WOT

So what we talking, Transmission fluid, RMM, Shift plate?

    All of the above...?

    While doing more 'searching'

    http://www.torontomazda3.ca/forum/sh...fter-Adjusting

This thread seems to be the same problem I've been having, complaints of 1-2 being hard to engage and 'grindy'

I will try the adjustments (same as the JBarone video) this weekend and post results

I just replaced the OEM rubber shifter bushing crap with washers for 1$ and it made a world of difference. Then I tuned the selector rod as per the Jbarone vid and that took 2 seconds and made an additional slight positive difference.

I haven't had gridning in any gear now except for the occasional grind when going back to first gear at a slow roll. (or course this will likely change when the temp goes back below zero...)

I am tempted to change the transmission fluid, BUT i feel like that would be stupid until im out of warranty (because I'm thinking in the next year i could probably get my transmission fixed under warranty, and I dont want to see my expensive new fluid just flushed back out in a year.)
Canada gave us rust and DRL. Thanks for nothing Canada!

Changing the transmission fluid to that ford shit wouldn't void warranty, would it?

$250 to drain and fill tranny fluid? Seriously? If they can do an oil change for $50, they should be able to do tranny fluid for under $100.

Probably more of the same issues , and fixes posted.

I am going to try the cable adjustment this weekend, and see how much of a difference that makes.

Would change my own tranny fluid, depending on how hard it is, and if i can do it in my parking lot (without jack stands or anything)

do a slave cylinder drain and fill (uses brake fluid). recently did it on my own car (S2000 using Mazda Dot 4 fluid) and also changed the transmission fluid (GM Syncromesh). My grind went away and everything feels brand new again

I'll have to read up on this, any good links for videos etc on changing those fluids?

I bit the bullet and bought the TWM full replacement shifter anyways, but it probably won't hurt to put in the new fluids too

Be warned, you will hear your differential when the car is cold and you're making a tight turn at low speeds. It's not an issue and I believe you shouldn't add friction modifier to make that noise go away (something to do about the friction modifier causing problems for the synchros). Others add the FM anyway, reasoning that it's just 6oz of fluid, and they don't have issues either.

I did a combination of CP-E 75D RMM, JBR SSP + SSB, Ford tranny fluid, JBR heavy knob and that 1st to 2nd complication went away. Everything is a lot smoother now, haven't heard that annoying grind for months since I first had this combo. Although, it did make the shifting a bit stiffer due to the SSP. Nothing to be worried about though.

    Good combination altogether.

    EDIT:

    SSP = Short Shift Plate
    SSB = Solid Shifter Bushing

    So many acronyms...

I'm hoping just replacing the whole dang thing with the TWM one eliminates the problem...

its not $250, unless the dealer were to order the fluid from ford not sure what it costs, the manual trans fluid replacements are around $150, auto is $189

How come so much? Is it synthetic MTF? It's just as quick and easy as an oil change...

I was quoted somewhere around $89 less TM3 discounts at maple mazda to drain and fill with my own ford unicorn tears tranny fluid

then again, jimmy did it for me last time around... pretty sure he was about half of that
