Oh man, that sucks! Looks like the bearing clearance was too tight. Its important to measure the bearing to journal clearance with a plastigauge when assembling the motor. Good luck man!

Right on. So what did you do to fix the toast rebuilt engine? Did you just replace the parts or do a fresh rebuild again?
He's decided to go with a B18c now.
All I can say is that you have to make sure the bearing clearance on the crank is within spec (plasti gauge) and measure the cam to tappet clearance. If anything is too tight or loose major fail soon follows.
