Hey guys a buddy of mine under took this project with his Subaru WRX and figure it would be cool to post. One other member I've worked with has done this as well.

Here are the steps he went through

Hey Dave,

Sure - this will be a pretty detailed email.

Originally I planned to use the Kidigi Desktop HDMI Dock, which offers a true Galaxy S3 ready 11 Pin MHL port.

This cradle offered excellent fitment, with the benefit of being able to dock the phone even with a slim rubber case on it.

The product came with a 500mA 110V power supply which I did not use.

I proceeded to install this dock in my Subaru, by modifying my rear cupholder.

In order to provide sufficient power to the cradle, I purchased a Dual (1Ax2) USB car charger.

This allowed me to give the dock the power it needed, and also have a spare USB port to charge a 2nd device if required.

The only other part I needed to complete this was a standard 6’ HDMI cable to attach the dock to the AppRadio.

So, this setup worked great, but not perfectly. As it turned out, the MHL port INSIDE the Kidiji dock was of sub-par quality.

This caused the display on the AppRadio to “snow” frequently, as well as audio pops and video loss. Many people suggested it was the port not making a firm connection to the phone, but they were wrong. The phone was absolutely snug, and these issues occurred even when the car was not in motion.

This led me to try solution #2 – The official Samsung AllShare Cast Dongle

I wanted to try this route so that finding a quality MHL->HDMI adaptor that would not “snow” would no longer be a problem.

The dongle ships with a UK 220V -> 500mA power adaptor (useless to us).

I used a standard MicroUSB cable to power the AllShare Cast Dongle with the 2nd power port on my car charger. I still used the Kidigi dock, but now solely for charging and phone placement.

My YouTube video provides a very detailed report of my initial setup with the Dongle.

It is important to note (as mentioned in the above video) that if you are going to use ARLiberator you need to root your Galaxy S3. This is so that it can intercept the Bluetooth touch events. This causes a small problem with the AllShare Cast Dongle, as the AllShare App built into the Galaxy S3 will not function if it detects that the phone has been rooted. This is easily corrected by purchasing [root] Triangle Away from Chainsoft in the Google Play store. This app resets the flash counter back to 0 fooling the Galaxy S3 into thinking it is running the original firmware.

Everything seemed to be working fantastic, I had a full wireless solution with no video issues. Then, a major setback.

The AllShare Cast Dongle outputs full 1080P video, however it DOES NOT output high quality audio.

The audio output sounds “tinny” with no mid-range (depth) or bass. No amount of EQ adjustments can restore the output to sound properly.

I pursued this matter with Samsung Tech Support over the phone and via email for over a week until I got fed up. I was blue in the face with frustration as NO ONE could give me a reason why this was happening, or even an indication of if it was by design or a bug. I have not given up on getting an answer on this, as you can see from my post on the XDA Developers forum.

See my post #125 on page #13 of this thread

Also, read the response to my post, #126 on the same page.

Another member on XDA reported that he suspected the AllShare Cast Dongle was outputting audio optimized for the internal speaker on the Galaxy S3. The reason being, the sound quality was normal for him for about 30 seconds, then it went crap with a message stating that “sound alive” was disabled because no headphones were attached. Although I did not have the same result, this was encouraging and I contacted Samsung again. Another 2 or 3 days of calls with USELESS tech support caused me to give up. They really are useless. Want to know what they told me? “We can’t help you with this because we don’t have an AllShare Cast Dongle at our facility to test in the lab”. REALLY? REALLY?

Anyhow, now completed frustrated, I went with a 3rd and final approach. I bought the official Samsung Galaxy S3 HDMI->MHL adaptor.

I connected this to my Galaxy S3, then used a standard HDMI cable to connect it to the AppRadio and another MicroUSB cable to power it from my car charger. While this worked PERFECTLY with no video or audio issues, I was annoyed at the fact that I could no longer dock my phone and had to plug it in manually every time. This was not acceptable.

So, I cannibalized my Kidiji dock and removed the sub par MHL connection port in it, and customized it to hold the Official Samsung MHL adaptor in place. This was fun. It took some cutting and a lot of hot glue to keep it firmly secured in the exact spot required, but I ended up succeeding. I now had the whole package. A dock, charger, mhl adaptor and NO issues.

This is where I’m at now, and I couldn’t be happier. I may eventually try to pull teeth at Samsung again for a proper reply on the Allshare Cast Dongle audio issue, but they are so painful to deal with that even now I get angry just thinking about it.

I forgot to mention one thing in my previous email to you, I would recommend you download and install “Sleep Standby # Root” from Google Play.

This app is enabled in ARLiberator to automatically dim the screen completely when required. This is great, as MHL mirroring gets the phone REALLY hot on continued use, and by default when you press the standby screen on the Galaxy S3, this locks the phone.

This great little app turns off the backlight completely, WITHOUT locking the phone.

Note, this requires root, by that is irrelevant as so does ARLiberator.
