I've been googling around solutions to this without using an amplifier but i can't seem to wrap my head around it ! Do you guys know an inexpensive way to check if a subwoofer is alive or not ?!

Find a friend with an installed amp, take it to a shop.

People have plugged them into walls to blow em but you probably don't want to do that...

9 volt battery. Take the positive and negative wires on tap it on the terminals. The subwoofer will thump if it's working.
