    Default Fuel Injector Cleaner

    Hi!
Is it ok to use "STP Super Concentrated Fuel Injector Cleaner"?

    Used 2010 Mazda3 GX
    84,000 km
    Second owner.

    http://www.stp.com/products/fuel-add...ector-cleaner/

    Thank you.

you want something with Polyether Amine in it, also known as PEA. almost everything on the market has very little to none in it. the only things i can think of that are readily available with a decent amount of PEA in it are redline complete fuel system cleaner, gumout REGANE and formula 1 fuel injector cleaner (canadian tire brand).

stp, lucas, seafoam, MMO and etc. are usually nothing but some sort of weak solvent such as a petroleum distillate, alcohol and other filler ingredients that do very little in cleaning anything through the gas tank.

other well known cleaners are BG44k, chevron techtron, and amsoil fuel injector cleaner. but therse are harder to come by here in canada

Redline SI-1 is an excellent choice and has PEA and can be sourced in Canada easily.

Can I conveniently add the entire bottle to my gas tank during my next fill up... or is the one bottle meant to be measured and used over several fill ups?
    Thanks.

You can do either. Instructions say you can use the entire bottle for quick clean up of neglect.

I would grab a couple bottles. The first bottle add half the first tank and last half the second tank. Be sure to add when your tank is almost empty *before* re-fuelling for best mixing.

You could then use the second bottle and measure out using the markings on the bottle for 5 or 6 tanks.

Be sure to do some nice spirited driving to clean things out!

With your mileage you are due for a MAF sensor and throttle body cleaning. Consider this as well.

Gumout doesn't have PEA listed currently but i think it had it listed in previous version. either way, i find it works and you can get it at can tire or even wal mart

I'd have to disagree with slick 50 being trustworthy

ah! but i said gumout REGANE, the regane is proven to have PEA in it. not all of the gumout products have the regane name.

Ok, thanks for letting me know! Any guess-timation as to how much this may cost?

IMHO... injector cleaner for our application is not effective, if you have poor performance its not from your injectors being dirty.

A clean MAF sensor, clean throttle body, clean air filter and maybe new spark plugs would do much more to benefit you at that mileage for our direct injection engines.

All of which are relatively cheap to replace/fix.

The OP has a 2010 GX 2.0L which is not direct injected.

Spark plugs are rated in the owner's manual to 120,000km and I would not bother with them until then. OP is best doing the other items thou.

I didn't change mine until 135 K and they didn't even look that dirty. PIC >>>http://imageshack.us/scaled/landing/208/44293832.jpg

Spark plugs are not checked for how dirty they are. It is based the colour of the base and the electrode.

OP should inspect them as they are easily accessed. They are a good way to tell how the fuel is burning in the cylinder so you might be able to gather information from how they look.

the oem spark plugs last a really REALLLLY long time. i replaced my original ones at around 140,000 and the tip/ground were great, but decided to change them anyways.

the next set i put in were NGK g-power. nothing special and replace again at 210,000km

now im using NGK iridium IX. again, nothing special but i did a full tune up at the time. ill replace these again at 280,000km when i hope to break the tm3 distance record

all these spark plug were on sale. the oem spark plug are really expensive compared to others. but i think i saw rock auto(or whichever online store) sell oem plugs for $10 a piece which is cheap.

FWIW, I'm halfway through a tank with Gumout Regane (complete fuel system cleaner - got it on sale for $7) in it and I feel a difference on the butt dyno. Trip computer Avg Fuel Consumption shows a ~5% increase which I expected on this tank. I'll be monitoring fuel consumption on the next couple tanks to see if it affects that at all.

Although, I also recently had my MAF wires soldered up, so I'm not sure which it actually is but it's nice to feel like it does something. All I know is it feels better than the STP stuff, which I've tried before when it went on sale.

From experience, spark plugs make a bit of a difference (changed out the OEMs at 125k, sitting at 175k now) but cleaning the throttle body/MAF sensor was the biggest difference. Possibly because I'd gone so long without doing it, but the effect was immediate and significant.

    Just to update...

I've used the Gumout Regane... then after a couple tank fulls of gas I had an oil change and replaced the cabin air filter... but now I'm occasionally get that rotten egg smell! This is the first in the almost 3 months that I've owned the car. Is this a result of using the "complete fuel system cleaner"?
Maybe at my next oil change I'll consider having the "throttle body/MAF sensor" cleaned, or did I just damage something by using the gas additive?

some cleaners do tend to smell a bit off when used. for example, the ford induction service will create a billow of smoke that will burn your respiratory system and make your eyes tear. using gas additives should not harm anything if used as directed.

on another note, i have been smelling a difference in exhaust smell around town lately. either the cars arnt warmed up or the winter gas formulations are %100 out now

Hi guys. My apologies for reviving an old thread.

I bought a used 2010 in October and thought it would be beneficial to try, "Gumout Regane Fuel System Cleaner", as the previous owners maintenance habits were unknown. It's been a few months and ever since using that gas additive, I've been getting a rotten egg smell. Changing gas stations has not helped either (Petro / Shell).

At my next oil change, will the "throttle body/MAF sensor" cleaning solve this?
(Sorry, my car knowledge is limited).

I highly doubt it. I use an even stronger product (Redline s1) and researched on plenty bad outcomes on the engine which are close to nil. Ever rule out your catalytic converter? This is just a helpful suggestion, my car knowledge is limited as well.

^^ pretty sure thats what it is. your catalytic converters are on their way out. but if you have no cel, then dont worry about it for now.

Figures, happens right after I buy the car, lol.

    No "check engine light" yet.
If I need to replace the catalytic converter, what would your guess-timation be as to cost?

dont replace them if theres no problem. oem can be costly unless you can get a used oem exhaust of a member here. i know the aftermarket high flow cs second cat runs around $200.
