You're best bet is to take it to a dealership and let them diagnose. We're all just speculating but only that can get you so far. Of course, it's too early for a catalytic converter to go but the rotten egg smell is synonymous with a bad converter. Don't know about any other causes. So either that or you have a dead possum rotting in you're cabin air filter compartment (joking).
If you have warranty, there's nothing to worry about!

It could be possibly the Cat but there are other things that can cause the rotten egg smell; A bad fuel regulator and/or a hot running engine for instance. Could also be the fuel your using, might have a high sulfur content.
Try using Shell exclusively for a couple of tankful's, if the smell still persists take it in for a diagnosis.
The CAT should be covered under warranty completely btw, I'm pretty sure.

Yes, I think I better take it to the dealership for a diagnoses, probably best sooner rather than later... if I'm not mistaken, I don't believe there's warranty left.
Ugh, dead possum, lmao! I have to laugh though, shortly after I bought the car I took it for an oil change and they found a mouse nest under the engine cover(?). They showed me the cabin air filter and it was disgusting! I don't think the previous owner took very good care of the car, or it sat on the lot for a long time.
I switched to Shell gas a couple months ago, but no change in smell.
Thank you, I hope it'll be covered.
Thank you everyone for your help!
Did you buy certified pre owned from dealership? If so depending what it is may be covered if under 140k
I think the catalytic converter, as part of the emissions system is covered for 7 years. I can't remember if there is a mileage stipulation though.
Should check with Mazda HO warranty claims.

there is a note on a tsb somewhere about a rotten egg smell. about sulfer in the fuel and so on so forth, try shell see if it makes any difference and different gas stations. wouldnt think your cat is on its way out, more common of a smell then you think but in 4.5 years we did 1 cat on a 2010 sport. but it did have about 250 000km so.. yea. im sure if you take it to the dealer they will print the tsb notes out for you and say "try all of these, nothing we can do"
I cant remember what it says but the dealer can show you. Tsb = technical service bulletin
Update.
The dealership said the rotten egg odour is a known catalytic converter issue for some Mazda3's.
- Nothing they can do.
- It's the sulfur found in gas.
- Recommended more highway runs.
- Suggested the odour may go away after time.
- Assured me it won't affect emission testing.

Sorry, lol, that's exactly what they told me, lol.
The dealership was very nice about my inquiry, but also very "to-the-point", which I liked instead of beating around the bush.
In the Fall I bought the car used and had the idea of using Petro gas, so I could convert Petro points to CAA dollars.
I have since switched back to Shell a couple months ago, as they have always been the gas station of choice over the years.
lmao!
Thanks!
i just picked up a couple bottles of the gumout regane on amazon for $4.20 each. just rolled over 227000, and it's been feeling a little sluggish lately, for $4 why not try it
I use Mercury Quickleen.... best stuff ever.
