Changed the battery today, the Type 35 fits with room to spare. Original Battery was Panasonic from Japan.

your original battery was also a group 35
you should've put in a group 24F as I always suggested
when will everyone here stop questioning the battery sizes? what I always told people before is tried and true and works... do I really need to write an article to be stickied?
there's a interstate group 24F battery in my 2.3l, and my friend's 2.0l has a energizer group 24F battery... it all fit the same!

the 24f fits fine, i got one recently. however when i got it at cantire, it wasn't listed as a battery for my 05 2.0... it only listed the 35 and that other one (26 or something). i told them it i needed a 24f for a mercedes or something.
the 24f does fit, and im glad i read your posts and looked into it. thanks
it does fit because it is a mazda approved size... it's in mazda's official application chart... some 3s came factory equipped with the panasonic equivalent of these huge batteries
26R is the smallest approved size... it comes on US spec cars.... it's crap, not even worth mentioning
Does anyone's headlights dim (noticeable at night) when you turn the steering wheel.... I thought this was a problem with my old battery but this new one is the same... any ideas?
Yep! Sure do! It gets better eventually, and its most likely not the alternator like it should be. Lots of Mazda 3 owners have it and can't figure it out. It definitely gets less noticeable though.
You can replace the alternator because that could be the problem, but it's most likely just Mazda probs.
Interesting. .. so just crappy engineering than.
When it comes to car batteries one thing to consider is that heat is the number 1 killer which I'd imagine why the battery box is oversize and Mazda made the air channel to the battery. Going with the larger battery will take up the air space around the battery likely decreasing the life span since it will be running hotter.
there's still considerable space between the battery box and the group 24F battery... yes, it fills the box up, but not to the point where there is zero air space! see: http://www.torontomazda3.ca/forum/sh...=1#post1150813
your concerns is a non-issue, especially since mazda decided to cheap out and delete the battery cooling duct in the genpus and genpees.... furthermore, the group 24F batteries have greatly more electrolyte and larger battery plates, both which can tolerate high heat better than a premium group 35 battery as those have tightly packed battery plates.... canada doesn't get really hot compared to the southern US too, so heat isn't the primary factor killing batteries, old age is... there's people here still driving with 9 year old batteries!

Mine was a couple months short of 9 years when I changed it not that long ago. The new battery will probably outlast the car... I have the cooling duct removed right now (didn't reinstall it after I added the SRI but I will put it in for the summer). You're right south of the US life expectancy for batteries is something like 2 years, up here it's 4-5 years. I'm not sure why the size would make any difference.
edit here's a cool chart;

heat kills batteries due to electrolyte loss and cell break down... premium high CCA cold weather batteries have greater cell density and therefore less electrolyte than a hot climate battery.... a group 35 battery is much smaller than a group 24F, so when you try to eek out 600+ CCAs from a group 35, it can only last so long in the heat... simply physics really because high density cells have thinner and tightly packed plates, so they can only withstand so much abuse! the group 24F is much larger and as such has much more electrolyte and they do not need as high of cell density in order to get 800 CCAs... I'm sure it won't take much to get 1000 out of a group 24F by using the same technique used to make a high powered group 35...
definately do not buy mazda replacement battery
garantee suck
All Mazda vehicles except B-Series:
The originally equipped battery is fully covered for the first 12 months of the warranty period regardless of kilometrage. After 12 months but within 24 months, 50% of the replacement battery's suggested retail price will be your responsibility. After 24 months but within 36 months, 75% of the replacement battery's suggested retail price will be your responsibility. The rest, including labor charge, is covered by Mazda.
The 24F has returned to Costco - 24F with 35 side by side comparison

Hey to The Man. 12 years old. Just dying now.
Thanks
Just wanted some opinion on this- i'm going away for vacation for a month, should i disconnect my battery on my mazda? The car is 3 years old with the original battery still on it. Just wondering if the battery will drain while i'm away? Thanks in advance.
