Been a bit since I've updated here. New parts installed include Damond Motorsports EGR block off and delete. Also installed a set of CorkSport coilovers, and a 5mm spacer plate on the rear wheels. I sold off my Cobb SRI + CorkSport TIP frankenstein setup and replaced it with a JBR SRI (white) + JBR TIP (black). Installed Guardian Angel recently, and bought plate relocation kit from @thrizzle and had it repainted at Roberts Signs and Awnings (wife's family business). Got that installed along with the replace moustache. I recently took off the white carbon fiber vinyl from the hood and had it replaced with matte white vinyl on the hood and roof. Rear hatch is now debadged. I just have to remove the rear wing and have it taken back to Roberts to have the wing and hatch wrapped. Only two other pending installs at this point; Rally Armor black mud flaps with red lettering, and new brake setup (Centric high carbon blanks + EBC yellowstuff).

Quick update as I've done a lot of work recently. Here is how it sits as of this week.



So, the original idea here was to build something that I could street drive daily (take kids to daycare/school) and then periodically autocross, maybe a track day here or there. But things changed over the last few months, and now I have 2 separate daily cars (one for wife, one for me), so now this is my tuner car, and I can't do pretty much whatever I want without having to worry about daily. Some of the parts on the car noted below were done because I was shooting to daily it, and now that it's going to be a "track car", I'm going to have to go back and probably replace some of the new parts...

Anyways, here we go.

Parts from the last year

* Enkei 17x9 +45 (really should have been +48, but these work with some extra help...)
* Continental ExtremeContact Sport in 245/45 R17
* 5mm hubcentric spacers with extended hub up front (73mm outer, 67mm inner)
* 3mm hubcentric spacers in the rear
* ARP extended studs
* Muteki SR48 steel open ended lugs
* new OEM rear trailing arms
* new OEM endlinks front/rear
* new OEM hubs rear
* new thirdparty driver side drive shaft (if you need this done, just go OEM)
* new OEM pads front/rear
* new OEM rotors front, Delco rotors rear (I'm probably changing brakes over winter)
* new Bilstein B12 sport shocks/struts (includes new top hats for front struts as well)

Had to also do a bunch of electrical work, but all those gremlins seem to be solved now. I was getting VERY low voltage across everything due to a bunch of corrosion in the main fuse box. I've cleaned that up, new fuses, etc and things seem to be a hell of a lot more reliable now. No CEL in quite a while, and things drive quite well.

Took out the rear SPC adjustable camber arms because the mechanic who put them in originally never set them properly (just popped them in as they sat in the box...). With the arms out, I set the length to stock, and cleaned them up a bit so that they were adjustable again. Some corrosion over the last couple years caused them to seize up a bit.

Been learning a lot about how to work on these cars. Did a compression test (180-155-160-175) across the cyilinders. Did a leak down test, and it seems like it's coming from the intake side (no leaking into the oil cap, no bubbles in the coolant, no sounds from the exhaust). Have Corksport injector seals sitting in my cupboard for now. Will install over the winter, and clean the valves. We're going to see if there are things that can be done to clean up some of the compression numbers without immediately assuming every compression problem is ringlands. We'll see if that can be the case in these cars

TODO:

* remove rear wing, wrap rear hatch, reinstall rear wing
* alignment
* injector seal install (compression test, leak down test)
* valve clean (compression test, leak down test)
* check turbo and seals, possibly replace with new/used K04
* dyno tune
* lots of practice in the simulator and look for an instructor to prep for first season of time attack

Short term plans are basically engine build for purposes of reliable track usage. I won't be attempting max HP with this car, and it will probably come off the street in favour of a trailer come end of summer (I might as well bring it around to a few meets before I take it off the road ). Long term plans are uncertain. The short term plans may be mostly it in terms of what I do to the car, or I may go full racecar and strip the interior and install a rollcage. Hard to say at this point.

Short term though, the build will include:

* ACT 6 puck with 16lbs flywheel
* GTX2871 turbo
* K1 rods + Wiseco pistons
* ARP head and main studs
* VVT kit, gaskets, etc
* Balance shaft delete
* power steering and oil intercoolers
* AC delete [pending, undecided]

Just waiting for the clutch kit to arrive, and then the kit, crankshaft, and block are heading to the machine shop for clean up and balancing. Once they get back, then we'll see where we're at

If you don't plan to pass 500hp, the stock head and crank studs will hold all that power. Freektune has done a lot of testing on them.
You just need to make sure the engine builder follows the mazda torque procedure on them.

Not sure what your plan for fueling is because that may become an issue. If you plan to keep the TMIC I would get some methanol in your life.

Welp, downpipe and resonated testpipe ordered today from Ultimate Racing. Next up is purchase of a GTX2867 + JBR 3" intake. That should pretty much do it for parts until after the build is completed. Sounds like assembly should start in about 1.5 to 2 weeks. I'm hoping to be on the road by June.

It's been a bit slower going than I'd like, but hey, that's the nature of builds that you're not doing yourself (not that I'd have it done any faster alone...). Making progress. The engine is mounted back in the bay. We're just waiting in the intercooler parts for the power steering and oil to arrive, along with a new sandwich plate that has a return line for the oil. Here is the current progress (not shown, car mounted in the bay because poor quality image).

IT'S DONE(ish). I mean, nothing is ever done, but it's passed a milestone.

So engine is together, and the final gremlins (some clunking sounds from the mounts) have been addressed. Next steps are oil temp and pressure gauges installed and mounted, followed by dyno tune.

Engine built by Victor Schmitt @ Schmitt Tuning in Cookstown, ON. Highly recommended.
