Default Looking to borrow/rent rear caliper tool

    Hi guys,

I need a brake piston compressor tool which a special tool used for the rear caliper piston to be pushed back to allow for the space for the new pads!

I tackled the rear brake pads yesterday as the weather was good and noticed that I cannot compress the piston with regular tools.

Does anyone have one in Toronto, Scarborough, Markham, north York, thornhill, or Richmond hill area who would let me barrow theirs for 2 hrs? I am willing to pay you something for it! I have a six pack if that works too!

I would really appreciate someone letting me Barrow their tool as my car is stock on jacks!

You can call, text for fastest reply! 647-449-4931

    Thank you for reading

    Ali

Worst case, use channel locks and a clamp with a rotating base, put the clamp on and apply slight pressure, then rotate with the channel locks, just be careful with the boot

You can borrow it from any canadian tire, parts source, napa, etc. you basically pay for it on a credit card and they give you 100% back when you return them.

You can also just use needle nose pliers, an end in each pin and twist and push at the same time (use some muscle).

I also have a set but am in Kitchener lol

You know you need to 'turn' the pistons has you push them in right?.

Rear calipers you must twist clockwise while you push because of the parking brake...C clamps only work on the front.

I used needle nose pliers. Takes some force but it works.

Edit: here's what's behind the piston, that's why you have to twist.

I never had luck finding them.

If your going to bleed anyways loosen the bleeder valve on the caliper and use needle nose pliers. Thats what I did. If you loosen the bleeder no real force needed.

I always bleed when doing a brake job. just in case. I dont usually find air in the lines unless there was another problem. This time was no different even though I had opened the valve to push the piston in.

I just did my brakes last month and rented this tool kit from Parts Source. I paid for the kit when renting, got the money back in full after returning. Don't waste your cash to buy this kind of kit unless you plan on using it often.

Girlfriends dad has one of these. For the fronts a C clamp is all you really need. The first time I did the rears I didn't realize it twists rather then pushes in and broke my C clamp trying to figure it out. Then got a set of needle nose pliers and got it to work. But last year the girlfriend's father got a whole caliper set and its fantastic! He asked for it because the last time he did it on my girlfriend's sisters car (06 Mazda6 GT) he did the same thing and snapped a c clamp not realizing it. This thing is amazing and for like 50-100 you'd get your use outta it.

What I did (pics somewhere) is put a pair of pliers in a palm sized block of wood and push and turn. Ghetto but works.

+1 on the Loan-A-Tool program at Partsource.
I did my rear brakes last week and the process was MUCH easier with the caliper tool. If anyone's planning to do their own rear brakes I would highly recommend loaning the tool. Using pliers can be very frustrating and not worth the trouble considering the tool is free to loan.
The caliper tool is listed as Master Caliper Piston Tool or something like that on their sheet.

you'd probably pay more in gas returning the thing through loan a tool than just dishing out the 3.99 for it..

The loan a tool ones you get the full kit like this though:

The little cube you still need to use other things to make it work.

Like a socket extension and ratchet? Which you should have since you would need them to take the caliper off. Unless you're working on a number of different kind of cars with the pin spacing different on all of them, you don't really need all those extra plates

The little cube does not fit. Ask me how I know.

You can make it fit if you grind it with a Dremel (5-10 min job). See the picture below which side to grind. The diameter of each new pin must be 4 mm. Keep the distance between the new pins the same as the old ones.

I have also seen "solutions" that suggest to widen the holes of the piston by drilling but you risk to damage your caliper (a ~$200 part).

I hope this helps. Now hopefully I will be able to find good replacement caliper since my rear left one is very very well seized. Even the retaining spring has welded itself to the caliper. Beat me, I have no idea how this can happen

Have a cube. Did modify mine to fit. Worked 'ok'. Wasn't a precise fit but did that job. Just replaced both rear calipers. One in January and one the other just this past weekend. Both were seized nicely. Now when I push in clutch. The car rolls. Go figure!
