anybody done this or heard of anybody doing this and know how it went? was just wondering how it would be if someone were to upgrade the internals on the stock turbo and put a different waste gate onto it .

just go BT if you are going to do all that work...also guessing from your handle you have a 13 ms3 so why are you looking to rework the k04

Upgrading stock turbochargers was a popular option 15+ years ago with Supra, Celica, and Z owners. But, now, there are more sensible methods for more flow...
Throwing money into the factory turbo and bolt it back up to factory manifold and downpipe flanges? No thanks.
May as well go to a custom T3 setup with 50 mm or larger inducer. Divided inlets are out there if you're worried about large A/R.
Internally-gated housings do exist if you're lazy.
I'm thinking 5558 with billet impellor and ball bearing CHRA.
i wasn't looking to rework my stock k04 it was just something that i thought of while at work and was just curious to see end results if anyone actually did it
and if it was a waste of money which from these answers seems like it is. thanks
its not a waste depending on what you want out of your car. A BNR S3 is great for a smooth power band, where as a BT can really be a medium sized turbo or a huge one. It all comes down to what you want out of your mazda, and the money you want to spend.

@greyseason,
I'm thinking of upgrading my turbo, what do you recommend? And what sort of supporting mods should I be looking for?
The depends on what you want is right. The BNR S3 is one option and still considered "Big Turbo" as it's an upgrade from the stock k04. As for the other thing about medium or huge turbo's, that's a little vague and off base.
Really I'd classify the turbo variants as such (roughly speaking):
BNR S3/GT28/GTX28 as more less drop in/bolt on replacements for the stock turbo. Really don't need any big expensive supporting mods (on top of being already bolted) other than a big inlet, 3 bar map and probably an ebcs. Can run on the stock block, usually good for 300-350whp range, 400whp with meth/e85.
GT30/GTX30 (ala 3076) as being the big turbo options, for that 400-500whp range but needing additional fueling and a built engine.
GT35/PT55/58/62 as being huge turbo, built block/head work, manifolds, 5th/6th port fueling, and other insanity, for that 500+whp range.
Id recommend the following;
- forged pistons/rods
- 5th port fueling possibly, depending on how much power you want
- PnP intake/exhaust
- Cobb AP
- HPFP/internals
- exhaust manifold
- meth
- spark plugs
- a tune
I get what your getting at, but i replied to this quoteIs it a waste of money for some people? sure it is, its also a great option for some people...i wasn't looking to rework my stock k04 it was just something that i thought of while at work and was just curious to see end results if anyone actually did it
